biogene··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
Well, everyone has their view, I don't think I'm any more right than you. You can give a technical definition of an OS from a CS textbook, but ultimately all of these are consumer/retail products created to benefit the end-user, not so much to create a technical design masterpiece. But that is just my view. I tend to side on the practical aspects more than design purity.
biogene··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
I don't care for edge for the most part, but there is actually one integration with edge that I have come to like. When I click on an email link inside outlook, edge opens the link, and also displays a sidebar which displays the email. Super handy IMO.

Somehow we need to find a balance that allows vendors to tightly integrate their apps but prevent abusing this.

MS is everyone's favorite whipping boy, but I fear what kind of ads Google while shove through if they ever get a dominant market share in desktop OSs. Apple seems to be the only sensible alternative.

biogene··on CRISPR used to 'reprogram' cancer cells into healthy muscle in the lab
>One hurdle that will need to be overcome is that NF-Y also regulates important processes in healthy cells, such as metabolism and the cell cycle, the series of steps that cells go through as they grow and divide. However, Vakoc and team hypothesize that because RMS cells are "highly sensitive" to changes in PAX3-FOXO1 expression, there could be a "window of opportunity" in which a drug inhibits NF-Y long enough for RMS cells to differentiate but not so long that healthy tissues get damaged.

Author buried the most important "but.." in the last paragraph. Lets keep "sciencing", but this is just a catchy headline.

biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
There isn't a conspiracy against hiring people who are going to make you money. Anyone who adds value to a company and is going to generate more revenue than their labor cost is likely going to be hired over someone who does not.
biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
You can type that comment, but perhaps if you were in someone else's shoes you'd have a different opinion.
biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
Sort of. If you pay new-hires significantly more than existing employees for the same work, its not going to end well (and it can potentially open the company up to a lawsuit on discrimination grounds). I suppose the caveat is check your local laws.

biogene··on Google was founded 25 years ago today
I partially agree; they did make a big splash with all of those benefits, but also Google excludes 54% of their workforce (TVCs) from these benefits. Its a bit of a stretch to say tech workers owe Google for these benefits at other companies. To me, they're a shrewd US corporation (not that there is anything particularly wrong with that) where I don't see a lot of "goodness".
biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
It doesn't "correctly" predict anything because most of macro-economics is junk science with value only in the limited context of political platforms and giving people some sort of false hope. When the Nobel prize winner of Economics says its all bullshit, I tend to take notice :)

biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
You didn't say which country you were referring to, but capital is heavily regulated in the US. So is labor, so is profit. All economic activity is within the context of the governing laws, of which, there are too numerous to list here.

There are aspects of democracy that are pure self-interest driven, and some that are driven with rose-tinted glasses to create a future society that we all want to live and thrive in.

"Explaining actual repercussions" is just another way to inject bias, there isn't a proven method to reliably predict macro-level impacts of laws and regulations. We all have beliefs, and hopes :)

I don't see anything we disagree on really. Maybe just the phrasing of things.

biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
You deserve to stay in business when you are a legal business entity that is following all the laws and regulations. Giving everyone a raise is not required by law. It is not a realistic strategy to get out of this inflationary environment - that's my view.
biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
These simplistic models of Supply/Demand don't work in the real world. We have price-controls on rent, property tax increases, utilities, healthcare, etc, etc. Would you support removing those?
biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
Thankfully, there isn't such a system anywhere in the developed world. We have price controls on rent, utilities, healthcare, etc. It would be extremely hard to convince folks in a democracy to vote against those.
biogene··on The perpetual truck driver shortage is not real
(Going with the assumption that it's purely due to salary)

If you adjust the salary for new-hires, you'll have to also adjust every employees salary otherwise it becomes unfair to existing employees. Lets give a raise to everyone in America to match inflation isn't really a tenable strategy. Most small businesses would simply go under if they had to do that for 50-100 people. I believe this is the unfortunate reality of many businesses in the US which are struggling already.

No worries, I got the point you were trying to make, my comment was directed more at people who snipe at successful products - when the reality is a lot more nuanced/complicated. There is complete freedom to criticize, but then (I believe) there is also a responsibility to contextualize the criticism.

I didn't find DOS or Windows to be any less stable than other consumer operating systems. But regardless of which code-base is more/less stable, niche code-bases don't get stressed in the same way as a mainstream consumer OS.

Ironically, many people who were skeptical of the new mrna vaccines were labelled as conspiracy theorists!

biogene··on A plot to steal the secret Coke can-liner formula
You can do generic tests like testing for toxicity, but that won't give you the full picture.

If you don't have a list of all the input raw materials, intermediates, by-products, impurities, surface materials that can leech into the final product, etc; you can't test for them.

biogene··on My Caste
I don't feel bad in point out flawed arguments or articles. Its up to the author to take the feedback for what it is, or discard it.
biogene··on My Caste
I'm pointing out elementary flaws in the methodology. As such the article wasn't convincing for me, and this is my feedback.
biogene··on My Caste
This whole idea is completely wrong, in my opinion. You first need to demonstrate why your sampling model/methodology (collection of top50 NA CS departments) will lead to an error-free way to establish a discrimination type mechanism of selection. There is a near absence of people of South east asian origin in the NFL, but I don't think the NFL is doing so on discriminatory grounds. The end result is under-representation, but the underlying mechanism is not one of malicious discrimination by the talent scouts.

The point is, lets discuss evidence of discrimination rather than a weird "this can only be possible with discrimination" argument.

biogene··on So what if Google sends me targeted ads?
Google employees can access this data too; and sometimes they get fired. Do you know anyone who has been the victim of online harassment or having personal data leaked online? Its a harrowing experience.
biogene··on So what if Google sends me targeted ads?
This type of concentration of power in a privately held for-profit corporate entity is bad. There isn't any reason to trust a random Google employee - dozens of whom have been fired by Google for accessing personal data. Removing the temptation from an unaccountable giant corporation is the best approach, IMO. Abuse of power doesn't affect everyone; but we still have laws against many forms of it.
biogene··on Frequent and infrequent users of social media respond differently to rewards
I think a good chunk of this is caused by an inability to see past the flaws of others, and assuming the worst of people. And also assuming that someone completely lacks personal integrity because of a opinion that they hold that you disagree with.
biogene··on Frequent and infrequent users of social media respond differently to rewards
It's not just social media, its all discussion forums, (very much including HN) that has contributed to the polarization.
biogene··on Live worm found in Australian woman’s brain
>And worms aren’t all bad. Your body’s immune system likely welcomes its presence. Our th1-th2 balance is supposed to have evolved with an assumption of helminth infections happening over the course of your life, so having a worm or two is likely a good thing. Supposedly

What is the point of making a claim and then walking it back?

biogene··on Apple Pay Later: What Are the Crazy Ones Up To?
I can never understand why there is a general cheer around large and powerful corporations (e.g. Apple) becoming even more large and powerful by acquiring other companies.

Nice, must have been interesting to use such a variety of tech that people were still figuring out. Yeah, I got directly into TCP/IP with trumpet winsock. All the stuff prior was before my time (the stuff that I had access to anyway).

What network were you on? I'm curious, I never had anything except dial-up (BBS) back in those days.
