binlog··on I Don't Like LLMs
Kinda funny that one of the biggest software engineering “influencers” of all time can’t host a blog that survives HN front page traffic. Maybe try LLMs Martin.

He is of course entitled to his opinion on the topic, but I’m personally not going to put too much weight on it considering he hasn’t written software for a living in probably decades.

binlog··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
I agree that they should be separate modes, but presenting it as a toggle in the app is a terrible user experience.

The model itself should figure out how much “power” it needs to run the query. I’m just asking a question. Whether you need to do a simple internet search or spin up a VM and run scripts is up to you.

Average is meaningless for anything that isn’t a normal distribution. The median spend per account is probably like $100.
binlog··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Evidence is the responsibility of the one making the claim. It’s up to AI labs to prove consciousness. Until then it is a machine.
binlog··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Hard to disagree with this. Have all the philosophical debates about consciousness you want, but we need to treat and regulate the AI in front of us for what it is – an advanced computer, a tool, a weapon.

You wouldn’t feel a different way about a nuclear bomb just because someone stuck googly eyes on it.

Anthropomorphizing the AI is a convenient excuse to take responsibility away from companies that are building and wielding it.

Says who? Models can also use results from tool calls in their reasoning loops.
binlog··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Funny that they aren’t targeting OpenAI and Anthropic’s computer use agents, which can do the exact same thing, and probably do it at a much larger scale given their userbases. The difference of course is that both OpenAI and Anthropic are hosted on AWS Bedrock, and Amazon is a huge investor in Anthropic to boot.
binlog··on New $100K H-1B Visa Fee Pushes Tech Jobs Offshore
So then why do they hand out visas that require “extraordinary ability”?
binlog··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
The H1B problem could be fixed overnight if the government handed them out by a simple test of ability rather than an idiotic lottery. Having world class researchers and engineers who command million dollar salaries enter the same line as a $60K worker at a slop factory like Infosys or TCS is beyond idiotic. And a high visa fee ultimately hurts more than it helps because it drives away both groups, and US tech needs the top talent from across the world to continue to remain dominant.
binlog··on Temporal raises $550M at a $12.55B valuation
Not the same thing, because celery and the like are sdk-level abstractions that need you to plug in your own queue (usually Redis, Kafka) and all other components. The Temporal server deployment includes the full control plane, queue, persistent database, UI and everything else. So you only need to manage your worker boxes.
binlog··on Temporal raises $550M at a $12.55B valuation
It’s an async job runner that scales well. Yeah they advertise a lot of fancy features, but really what they are selling is solid failure-resistant infra. Companies could set the same thing up with an in-house team, but it’s pretty great to be able to click a button and start running workloads at tens or hundreds of thousands of RPS without needing to figure out the internals.
