bingemaker··on Heroku Postgres is now based on AWS Aurora
Care to shed some more light?
bingemaker··on Heroku Postgres is now based on AWS Aurora
After Heroku pulled their stunt in India when RBI changed some credit card rules, Heroku is pretty much history for me. They screwed small customers got rid of them saying they can't charge credit cards with new regulations. However they continued to entertain large customers from India.

Never recommending them to anyone anymore

bingemaker··on Making EC2 boot time faster
Curious, how do you measure the time taken for those 4 steps listed in "What takes so long?" section?
bingemaker··on RubyJS-Vite
With importmaps (https://github.com/rails/importmap-rails) and Hotwire (https://hotwired.dev/), you write plain js and serve it.

Also packages are served via CDN. There is no tree shaking. Rails got rid of the whole bundling step.

bingemaker··on Launch HN: Greptile (YC W24) - RAG on codebases that actually works
Can you please share the list? I'm curious
bingemaker··on More product, fewer product managers
This. Most of the developer teams are nothing but feature factories. There will be a point where what developers want to build and what the product needs will diverge. It is very hard to strike a balance IMO.
bingemaker··on Hasbro lays off nearly 20% of its workers
I never understood these layoffs. Don't the management team see it coming and plan it? Seems like a knee jerk reaction which affects people. Sad to see them ruining Christmas

Downvote mfs.

bingemaker··on Resume Matcher – An open source, free tool to improve your resume
The way ATS is growing, I no more know what a resume should contain. Are there any ATS standards?
bingemaker··on 20% of Millennials and 68% of Gen Z-ers still live with other family members
It is very common here in Gujarat, India. Most of them are employed and live in a joint family. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Gujarat
bingemaker··on Confusing Git Terminology
One thing that has really helped me understand git better is DAG (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directed_acyclic_graph). Whenever I do `git add <file/folder>`, it is somewhat easier to imagine how new blobs are created and how they are linked.

For beginners it is a fun exercise to understand why empty folders can't be added to git.

bingemaker··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
Not sure why am I getting down voted for posting an observation
bingemaker··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
When more and more parts of FF are written in rust, I thought FF will get a lot faster. But for the past 1 year, I can only see marginal improvements w.r.t speed. And occasionally FF hangs when I have 20 tabs opened.
bingemaker··on The costs of microservices (2020)
On the contrary, when they fail silently, it is hard debug "dependent" services
bingemaker··on Migrating our backend from Vercel to Fly.io
This. Anyone who has done enough ops knows that a platform (Vercel, Heroku, Netlify etc) which lets devs connect a git repo with a couple of clicks, and deploys automatically happen is a good devops experience.

This is great for personal projects. This is great for budding projects in a professional setup as well.

Those ceramic jars are some of the beautiful creations on earth
bingemaker··on macOS Sonoma is available today
XCode is refusing to install. Fails with some error, and asks me to download XCode again. Also now the system needs 70-80 GB of free space to install XCode. One of the funny upgrades so far
bingemaker··on Why don’t Americans eat mutton?
True that. Mutton biryani is love \../
bingemaker··on Are older people less innovative?
It all boils down to energy and exposure to current trends.

Older people tend to hang on to the past, so they are less "innovative" as per the current trends. For eg: For the love of God, I can never understand TikTok and why it is famous. There are a slew of new emojis which I don't understand. Sometimes, I feel that these are important to understand while coming up with ideas to stay relevant.

bingemaker··on GitHub Actions could be so much better
The current state of GA is much better than Jenkins. I don't like yaml, but this is still better than mucking around Jenkins configs. Fin

bingemaker··on Kargo, a multi-stage application lifecycle orchestrator
Sometimes, CD depends on CI. I trigger CD only when CI succeeds. Kargo looks confusing, but I have to dig deeper
bingemaker··on Kargo, a multi-stage application lifecycle orchestrator
Is this tool similar to https://dagger.io/?
bingemaker··on Comp.lang.c is now full of spam
Agreed
bingemaker··on Comp.lang.c is now full of spam
Moderated ones are just a bit better
bingemaker··on Ask HN: Does Instagram suspend accounts just to get their phone numbers?
This has been my experience as well. If I use proton mail, I always have to provide a phone number. This is a new norm, be it IG, Twitter, etc.
bingemaker··on Show HN: Puck – Open-source visual editor for React
Even if you are technical enough, you might still need a GUI to avoid any surprises. Also the end user of this tool is not tech people, but content managers
bingemaker··on I don’t buy “duplication is cheaper than the wrong abstraction” (2021)
Wrong abstractions make the abstraction configurable, and it is a slippery slope. Keep adding more arguments, configuration options, and there is no end to it. Sometimes duplication is indeed cheaper
bingemaker··on Ask HN: Flutter vs. React Native vs. Swift/Kotlin
> do you really need both Android and iOS? Can't you just start with one?

This approach makes sense to me. Start with one, and then build the other one. Thanks palata!
