bimguy··on Thanksgiving 2023 security incident
Nimbius, you sound like you work for a Cloudflare competitor.

No competitors were mentioned in Cloudflares article, they explained what kind of information was breached, nothing to do with payment/card info... so I doubt you even read past the first few paragraphs/conclusion.

bimguy··on Florida House of Representatives approves bill to ban social media for kids < 16
"Unconstitutional" arguments only go so far. I am not America (I'm a proud Australian) so I can easily see the incredibly obvious and ridiculous destruction "freedom" in your country entails.

Anonymity services can still exist without fostering an environment to addict children and young adults to social media or a device... and without your precious "rights" being taken away.

bimguy··on Apple dials back car's self-driving features and delays launch to 2028
I see that someone has worked at an AASP before.

shudders I can imagine their online interactive training right now...

bimguy··on Another Roman dodecahedron has been unearthed in England
Hahaha. I've never seen this standards page before. I work in Australia's building industry so I find this page particularly enjoyable.

Thank you for sharing the page and your sharp wit with me.

bimguy··on Another Roman dodecahedron has been unearthed in England
Not sure about "grapefruit-sized" when compared to the hand holding the object in the picture. Assuming it's the one they are writing about. I'd say it's closer to the size of a lime. Unless that person has a uniquely large hand of course.

Really interesting find though, never heard of these artefacts before.

bimguy··on Brave browser simplifies its fingerprinting protections
You are wrong. The very top of the chart reads:

"Desktop Browsers (default settings)"

bimguy··on Flipper Zero: Multi-Tool Device for Geeks
Assuming teachers were in class teaching when this occurred.

What do teachers use their phones for during class that they would have noticed this?

Genuinely intrigued as you never caught a teacher on their mobile phone in class when I was in school.

bimguy··on Kayak's new flight filter allows you to exclude aircraft models
Apparently Boeing employee's trawl hacker news threads because someone downvoted your post.

I'll never forget that Boeing made a secret flight system that actually crashed planes and then blamed pilots of third world countries for mistakes that Boeing made in not training pilots from ANY country about their secret flight system.

bimguy··on What's that touchscreen in my room?
He's a software engineer not a electrical engineer/electrician. Before I worked in building services I would never have imagined the astronomical price some contractors charge for labour. Have you never assumed anything in your whole life?
bimguy··on Flying kites deliver container-sized power generation
Oddly there is no mention of being safer to flying animals like bats for example, which have their sonar wigged out by the turbines.

I assume the kite would be friendlier to our flying friends but I guess this is not a concern in every country.

bimguy··on Meta documents show 100k children sexually harassed daily on its platforms
It is mind boggling how a high level Apple employee would not use Apple's own parental control abilities to safe guard their child's online activity. They aren't even supposed to be using the IG platform at twelve years old. I hope Meta would throw that back in Apple's face if they kicked up a stink.

Obviously this kind of harassment should not exist in the first place but parents who work in tech should be held more accountable for not protecting their kids imo.

bimguy··on Ask HN: Why aren't there more hearing aid startups?
Odd that your curiosity wouldn't just take you to the website they linked which would have told you the answer.
bimguy··on High-speed 10Gbps full-mesh network based on USB4 for just $47.98
Target disk mode to my workstation and saving someone's whole system with Disk Warrior used to be my favourite and most rewarding task. APFS did away with that joy, if a Mac OS systems fails now you have almost no chance of saving the system from itself.
bimguy··on When Random Isn't
I very much doubt it. There's a lot more functionality to Auctioneer then what was mentioned. Also, there are other popular auction add-ons, I think they would have just said it if they created Auctioneer.
bimguy··on The "Cheap" Web
I agree with your disagreements. I am really bad with any coding, I have tried to learn Python and CSS several times now and can't remember a single thing. At the age of 12 I was easily able to learn HTML to build functional websites. Despite not having written a website in HTML for over 15 years I am still confident that I would be able to build a website using HTML code only right now.

How is that hostile to beginners when it was the only language that I could ever grasp? Are there coding language out there easier than HTML?

bimguy··on Large language models lack deep insights or a theory of mind
"Large language models lack deep insights or a theory of mind"

Funnily enough, this statement also applies to people that are scared of AI.

Maybe a bit off topic but does anyone else have that friend who sends them fear mongering AI videos with captions like "shocking AI" that are blatantly unimpressive or completely fake?

What is the best way to subdue this kind of fear in a friend, sending them written articles from high level researchers like Brooks does not work.

bimguy··on 280M e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles
Despite whatever sarcasm I missed, thank you for replying more specifically to the tire dust article and your perspective as a EV owner.
bimguy··on 280M e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles
Okay... Sorry that I don't come to the internet to infer sarcasm and whatever other inflections you're assuming from written text...
bimguy··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
It's lucky that AI is not super intelligent then.
bimguy··on 280M e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles
That's nice... my comment was regarding the "clean and sustainable" part and what city he lives in, not about the traffic.
bimguy··on 280M e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles
> 1.fuck riding a bike on the road here, half of Tasmanian adults are the type of functionally illiterate arseholes who'd intentionally drive too close to a cyclist for shits and giggles

I feel like that is most of Australian drivers, however, I am glad I live in Melbourne and not Sydney. NSW roads are chockas and also, they literally try to kill you there, just for passing them while they are sitting banked up in traffic.

bimguy··on 280M e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles
Uhh, EV's are not as clean as you think, please read https://www.thedrive.com/news/tire-dust-makes-up-the-majorit...

Do you live in Perth or WA? It's pretty damn warm out there, 2km outside the car is not very comfortable the majority of the time.

bimguy··on 280M e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles
It's an interesting article. I am at odds with supporting full push to large electric vehicles in the wake of articles that have also been posted recently on HN: https://www.thedrive.com/news/tire-dust-makes-up-the-majorit...

I don't see any issues with the electric bicycles being relatively light compared to electrics mopeds and cars.

I would love to see a full and impartial comparison of all this EV vs Gas stuff, from the methods used for extracting the raw materials to the emissions and to the fact that the ocean is the main source of earths oxygen.

It's insane that countries are fighting petty wars over land claims when the earths environment is seemingly at a point of no return.

bimguy··on Blender 16yo winner of UK young animator of the year
Oh definitely, but still, they will find out very quickly if that submission was worked on by several people day one when you ask them to do x task and they can't do it. It's a silly suggestion and borderline conspiracy theory for something that is not that important.
bimguy··on Blender 16yo winner of UK young animator of the year
Logically, look at the scenes, the colours, textures and the theme... They all match.

Also, it's not a cash prize. The prize is a tour of an animation studio. Tell me what incentive would there be to falsify this kind of submission?

bimguy··on She lived in a New York hotel for more than 40 years, but her life was a mystery
The commenter and your landlord would have got along swimmingly.
bimguy··on Australia's overuse of antibiotics driving rate of drug-resistant infections
"What if it wasn’t about you dying? What if it was to make the world better?"

That would be a different discussion, with a different answer. I was only replying to the comment above mine.

Yes... animals produce waste & suffer from infections...

Inhumane conditions exist in the minority in every industry. You're claiming most butchers/abattoirs have inhumane conditions in an industry that I'm certain you've never worked in.

You're a former vegan but I see that you're still brain-washed by the material that you were hand fed.

bimguy··on Australia's overuse of antibiotics driving rate of drug-resistant infections
"most men would rather die young than stop eating meat" Seriously, you're going to phrase it like that? How about this, I enjoy a balanced diet and if that is going to kill me young then so be it. If I was scared of dying I would be much more worried about the coat of plastic dust that lines the entire planet, including vegetables being grown and the grass/feed that animals eat, and the fact that I'm extremely likely to die of cancer due to plastics everywhere, metal particles everywhere, chemicals everywhere... if the meat doesn't get me first.
bimguy··on Backblaze Drive Stats for Q3 2023
Cool article! Looks like HGST (formally Hitachi) perform very well overall. Toshiba 4GB ran 101 months with no failures, holy moly!

I used to like Samsung hard drives personally, Lacie used them in their rugged series and I found them to have pretty low failure rates. Seagate bought out Samsung's disk drive business in 2011 apparently. I guess Samsung saw the future of SSD's?

bimguy··on We've learned nothing from the SolarWinds hack
Businesses will lose money though, if not from the initial hack then eventually due to loss of the publics trust, ect, if the hack is made public knowledge.

Surely the gov lost a lot of money from this hack assuming they had to hire consultants, ect just to deal with this massive oversight.
