billybob255··on Help me HN: My startup after 10 days - Independent Music TV from Latin America
The site could definitely use a better design. I've wireframed something basic that I think is better. I see you've got some improvements on the way and maybe use it to help, although I'm not sure how much leeway Shortform gives you to move stuff around.

Move the leaderboard section down a bit

Put your corpo name in the top left(maybe include a link to your Twitter as well)

Enlarge the song/artist names, social links are good there (although you might get a larger response if you separate Facebook and Twitter and put them right out there)

Make the preview screens larger and underneath the main video with a title/artist visible without mousing over(similar to Vimeo's layout)

The massive slogan and "Learn More" button are really just wasted space, make them smaller to leave more room for the videos

Here's the wireframe link https://wireframe.cc/F5T58B

billybob255··on SWAT-Team Nation: The Militarization of the U.S. Police
So the police stopped planting evidence because a 12 year old called them out on it? This sounds like a made up story.

They sell other people's self help and/or meditation stuff

billybob255··on Soylent now accepting Bitcoin for preorders
Maltodextrin has a GI of 85 vs table sugar of 68. Not being sweet doesn't automatically make something healthier.
billybob255··on Soylent now accepting Bitcoin for preorders
It seems like it's purely marketing to the Silicon Valley/quantified self crowd.
billybob255··on Facial scrubs polluting Great Lakes with plastic
One pseudonymous claim that it's bad for your skin isn't exactly the greatest citation.
billybob255··on Pressure cookers, backpacks, and quinoa, oh my
That seems like a lot of conjecture on your part.
billybob255··on Student says he was unwitting drug mule, sues Ford
It's not that simple though, they do maintenance on cars as well so they'd need to be able to access those access codes as well. There probably should've been some oversight to make sure someone looking up thousands of VINs gets flagged somewhere, but it's reasonable to allow dealerships access to codes for cars they'd need to work on.
billybob255··on Don't talk to the police [video]
Certainly not, but it's not even close. There were ~5,000 reports of police misconduct and ~12,000 homicides in 2010.
billybob255··on Don't talk to the police [video]
Your fear is generally misplaced, here[0] are police misconduct stats (granted they don't count every single episode of police misconduct) and here[1] are crime stats. Certainly one episode of police misconduct is too much, but it's not nearly as high as crimes the police weren't involved in.

I think sites like HN and reddit showcase police misconduct and this leads to an exaggerated view of how prevalent it is compared to other dangers. It's similar to the MSM and sexual abuse/stranger danger.

billybob255··on How I have lost over 100 pounds and don’t know how
It's definitely not fat, when people with horrible diets eat less sodium they lose a surprising amount of water weight. I've seen estimates an extra 400mg of sodium being retained leading to an extra kilogram of water.
billybob255··on Marissa Mayer has been on a shopping spree, but is there any sign of a strategy?
I've seen estimates of ~90% of their revenue coming from advertising.
billybob255··on How Exercise Can Calm Anxiety
Not an expert, but a confusing aspect is open chain vs closed chain exercises.

Open chain exercises leave the foot or hand free to move (like swimming) and because of the lack of support they can actually exacerbate injuries. Instead of putting a joint under compression they put it under tensive strain.

Closed chain exercises are the opposite, the hand or foot is rooted in place (pushups, running, squats, etc) and because of this they add stability through the compression, BUT because of the compression they can also exacerbate injuries (especially because closed chain exercises are often weighted or involve repeated impact).

In the end, like most things, there is no one size fits all. In some situations closed chain is better, other open chain is better. For the average person it doesn't matter as much as most people think. If you're injured consult an expert for exercise to do, if you don't want to do that avoid exercises that cause joint pain.

Most of the studies are injury-specific and not in 100% agreement.

billybob255··on The Reddit sleuths who brought down a meme empire
It's a cool project, but HN doesn't seem like the sort of site that would be interested. Not that I'm criticizing you or your post.
billybob255··on Ask HN: Becoming a Freelancer in 6 months?
It's certainly possible to learn enough to become a competent freelancer, finding sustainable work in that time may be another problem. Here[0] is a link to a guy's progression who learned Python/Django in a month, it includes extremely helpful resources to help. I would also learn the basics of throwing up a Wordpress site just to have a quick way to demonstrate your abilities.

Is this a 6 months off to focus solely on learning development skills or 6 months to learn while working?

billybob255··on What Happens to Donated Cars?
Always copy/scan the filled out title before you give it to them, at least then there's some proof you transferred ownership.
billybob255··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes
Uh, it's been chopped up into bits since it existed as a country (currently 50), and they're all a little different.
billybob255··on Detroit's Decaying Old Train Station Has 5 New Windows and No One Knows Why
On a historic building 100+ feet off the ground? Yes, permits are generally required wherever you are. It's not quickly replacing a ground floor window in the suburbs.
billybob255··on Reddit’s Pitch deck to Advertisers
I think you're worrying about it too much and are looking at it from a very reddit-centric point of view. Like the example of Woody Harrelson, his terrible AMA in no way hurt his career.

A better example would be Hipmunk though, it's created by Huffman (later joined by Ohanian) and they advertise pretty solidly on reddit. The comments for the ads are pretty negative despite the reddit history, but Hipmunk is still doing quite well.

I think you'll do fine with a test run advertising on reddit, if you're that worried about it I'm pretty sure you can turn comments off for ads so they won't be able to see that other people don't like them.

billybob255··on Strongbox and Aaron Swartz
There's the possibility that the person knew the password to log into his computer and Skype was a startup program.
billybob255··on Making Open and Machine Readable the New Default for Government Information
Definitely a step in the right direction, but when I worked on federal contracting I used a VM because surfing through the different departments was wading through a sea of expired SSL certificates.

In terms of basic IT management Uncle Sam is way behind the times.

billybob255··on Judge Wright issues Prenda Law order
In the introduction the judge stated that the settlement costs were calculated to be just below a bare bones defense, ie it'd be more expensive for people to fight the lawsuit as opposed to settling; so the judge says that his punitive measures were calculated to be just below the cost of an appeal, ie reap what you sow Prenda.
billybob255··on Taxodus – mapping assets offshore
That's foolish, there are any number of reasons for keeping money out of a border that aren't evading taxes.
billybob255··on How My Co-founder's Dog Boosted My Productivity
Dogs certainly bring a lot more intangible benefits other than productivity gains. If you're getting a dog purely for productivity it'd probably be best if you didn't.
billybob255··on J.P. Morgan CEO Answers a Girl Who Wants To Marry a Rich Guy
This isn't from Dimon, it's copied from a Craigslist best-of(with the JP Morgan parts added in). It even has a Snopes entry.

billybob255··on Bitcoin Plunges By Nearly $30 As Largest Market Suffers Outage
The stock market has at least some value in the equity owned, bitcoins are the ultimate castle in the air investment. That doesn't mean people shouldn't use them, but they're a pretty poor investment.
billybob255··on Rosetta Stone Acquires Livemocha
I was coincidentally looking for the FSI courses the other day and found a site that catalogs various places to find them.
