billwilliams··on Rackspace Unlikely to Withstand Amazon, Google Onslaught
A comparison that this article makes 'Ah yes Amazon has the best most excellent Virtual machines but Rackspace has the best most excellent public cloud'. I make the best tomato sauce, but my competing friend makes the best tomato sauce.
billwilliams··on Why Teenagers Are Fleeing Facebook
Snap chat. Sexting is the new communication.
billwilliams··on Why Teenagers Are Fleeing Facebook
When an article's main source is the author's son, you know you're in for a treat.
billwilliams··on How Google Has Completely Botched Zagat
This is ridiculous. Zagat was not bought for its terrible app. It was bought so google would have an excellent amount of curated data on locations and restaurants.

Google pages and google maps had zagat ratings 1 month after Zagat was bought. All that data was free 1 Month after google bought zagat. Just open up google maps, boom zagat ratings.

The zagat guide was always hard to read through. The zagat app was always crap. All zagat had was their data, and thats what google has successfully leveraged. This article is a rant that shouldn't have been given a forum.

Unlike this comment.

billwilliams··on AT&T Invents Programming Language for Mass Surveillance (2007)
Seems fun that AT&T took this down
billwilliams··on High costs and negative value of pair programming
Experimental results or GTFO.
billwilliams··on The Internet Just Made Microsoft Kill a Car for a Faster Horse
Every time i see a post from medium.com on hacker news it always has some dramatic headline. But then the content tends to be poorly thought out, and more contrarian than insightful. Dear hacker news gods, please don't feed into tabloid techno-journalism.
billwilliams··on An implementation of the R Language in Java
Its easy to get addicted to R syntax / capabilities. (Read: Data scientists are lazy)
billwilliams··on Security theater martial law and a tale that trumps every cop-n-donut joke ever
How many people who are calling the events from boston "martial law" and "security theater" are from Boston or more specifically Watertown?

Until an armed man with explosives is hiding in your back yard, your opinion is not particularly useful.

billwilliams··on Healthvis R package – one line D3 graphics with R
Another similar project I've seen is https://github.com/nachocab/clickme

Haven't played with either, just throwing it out there.

billwilliams··on R, the master troll of statistical languages (2012)
Use both and you'll see. Python can do modeling, can do exploratory work and is great in production. R is brilliant at exploratory work and modeling. Having a core in functional programming helps too.
billwilliams··on Terminology – a new terminal emulator
Under no circumstances should rich media be displayed in terminals. I am terrified of progress.
billwilliams··on The Rise Of The Artist
Those who don't know about computers have two choices. Accept that it is a lack in their knowledge. Or fight fiercely that their ignorance is somehow justified.

billwilliams··on The R learning curve
Python is inherently not conducive to data analysis the same way R is. Python is not a lisp. R is more lispy, and its functional attributes make it incredibly useful for producing data analysis based code. For fully production ready systems R is not the ideal choice. For off the cuff analysis, python is a meager second.
billwilliams··on The R learning curve
R is my mistress and my wife.

Hadley Wickham held the ceremony.

Data.Table is the glue that holds together our tenuous marriage.

cats[color="brown",summary(tooth_length),by=list(breed,age)]. This line of code will efficiently grab all the brown cats in your data and summarize their tooth length by mean, median and other quartiles then break it out by the cats breed and age.

Every time I use a language I can't lapply I despise the language and all those involved.

R is hugely inconsistent and terribly inefficient. But its also the most irresistible blend of lispy and object oriented for when you actually need to get data analysis done.

billwilliams··on School of Data - Learn how to find, process, analyze and visualize data
Before you become a professional data jerk (like myself) people tell you 80% of the job is data scraping, cleaning, organizing, piping etc. And the last 20% is the analysis and stats (or predictive whosiwhatsits). They're lying. Its 85% cleaning, organizing etc, 5% doing "real" stats and 10% convincing people you're not lying. This site seems to nicely outline many of the tasks that fall outside of the "fun" 5%.
billwilliams··on E17 is out
Opinionated software is tremendous. By removing bullet points and telling users to read 5 some odd pages of dogmatic documentation you're letting the passion ooze from your project. Its saying "if you don't care about your window manager, we don't care about you". Except in 13000 words instead of 13.
