billrobertson42··on Show HN: My Isometric Voxel Engine 6 Months Later
Good. I think you're saving yourself a potential headache. BTW, Good stuff! Looks like a fun project. Pardon me if I missed it while skimming, but what is your development platform?
billrobertson42··on Show HN: My Isometric Voxel Engine 6 Months Later
Is it a case of "Source (will be) Available to Licensees?"

If so, I think trying to call it, "open source," puts you in the position where you might be perceived as being disingenuous. I also think it's less clear that way.

billrobertson42··on Ruby Garbage Collection: Still Not Ready for Production
> running the GC after every request, and requiring turning off the normal GC - is overkill.

Sort of reminiscent of Erlang's per-process GC. Although, given what I've seen of Ruby's internals, I'm sure the similarities stop at the very highest conceptual levels.

billrobertson42··on Why I Won't Switch To Go from Node.js
Everything is a nail.
billrobertson42··on Why does anyone still use Eclipse?
Netbeans, Idea, Bluejay
billrobertson42··on NetBeans IDE 8.0
That work was done by Tor Norbye who worked on the core Netbeans team at the time.
billrobertson42··on Show HN: My current App Store Featured Game was written entirely in Scheme
I have been tempted to try your stuff many times. But ultimately no experience with Scheme or ios (and lets face it the time to motivation ratio wasn't good enough either).

It is great work, and I think there's value in making other languages that don't require huge runtimes viable for ios development.

Just today I found a Clojure/ObjC bridge: https://github.com/galdolber/clojure-objc

billrobertson42··on Data.gov job posting for "IT Specialist"
Not quite, it says you have had to have. Meaning if you're past the age where it is required, and you did not to it, you're out of luck.
billrobertson42··on Ask HN: Why isn't Erlang more popular?
* tried it & stopped

Performance was focused solely on throughput, latency was terrible for anything requiring even modest computation. Finally dropped it after rewriting a naive Clojure implementation of something that ran 8x faster than the Erlang version.

billrobertson42··on JetBrains C++ IDE: Status update and Video report
I notice it didn't automatically insert the semi-colon after the closing curly brace of class SMA. Haven't done enough c++ lately to think of situations where you wouldn't want this.
billrobertson42··on An expanded comment on Clojure web development
The first option is really easy to get started with. It can get a little clunky though when you suddenly need a repl, because now you need a new window (be it terminal or emacs).
billrobertson42··on Injection of malicious code into jQuery is increasing
Or a reason to use something like tripwire.
billrobertson42··on Tesla Model S Center Console
I would recommend epoxy instead of superglue.
billrobertson42··on Implementing a JIT Compiled Language with Haskell and LLVM
Virtualbox runs just fine on Windows, and it's not difficult to set up a linux VM either.
billrobertson42··on I'm closing up shop, what should I open source?
You could look at bintray for your binaries.
billrobertson42··on Thorium: the element that can power the world
Tiny ubiquitous nuclear fueled power sources.

It'll be great! What could go wrong?

billrobertson42··on How do you personally use Emacs?
I use it mostly naked. That way, if I end up on a machine with an stock version, I can deal with it.

Have whatever mode you need for your programming language. Turn off evil crap like inserting tabs. Turn off the splash screen.

Swap your left capslock and ctrl keys (externally).

Learn the important key bindings and a few other tricks and you're good to go. That way you can focus on accomplishing something rather than spending oodles of time customizing your environment.

billrobertson42··on Odometer – A JavaScript and CSS library for smoothly transitioning numbers
BTW, I do like the effect.
billrobertson42··on Odometer – A JavaScript and CSS library for smoothly transitioning numbers
Seems completely broken in Firefox (v 25.0 beta). The only thing that happens in the jsFiddle example is that it changes the number, and the github page looks like a web page from in 1994. Switched to Chrome and all is pretty.
billrobertson42··on Lockheed To Furlough 3,000 On Monday, Layoffs Also Kicking In

billrobertson42··on Lessons Learned While Crawling the Web
I found certain aspects of it really interesting. In particular, the way that the author interacts with the crawling software to gain insight into the structure of a website. Not just the process, but the way he interacts with it is interesting too.
billrobertson42··on Turning a Wii Balance Board into a net-enabled bathroom scale
Relative to your overall weight, that doesn't seem like it's highly variable, but I've never been much for stats. Try weighing yourself daily after dinner and see the difference.

How much water do you drink per day? I have found that in times where I'm not drinking enough water, my weight will fluctuate more.

billrobertson42··on Turning a Wii Balance Board into a net-enabled bathroom scale
Daily weigh-ins can be very consistent if you weigh yourself in the morning at about the same time after using the toilet, and before eating/drinking anything.
billrobertson42··on Entrepreneurship Lessons from 1 Week of Hustling
Why do I feel like every time I read one of these articles where the person refers to what they're doing as, "hustling," that they're not somebody I would ever want to trust?
billrobertson42··on The Second Coming of Java: Clinton-Era Relic Returns to Rule Web
Where did the comments for this article go? There were several here this morning.
billrobertson42··on Show HN: Nightcode, the Clojure IDE, just hit 0.1.0
A thought for you. Put up an image that hasn't been scaled for your screenshot. It looks fuzzy and indistinct, not the best first impression.

billrobertson42··on (λove (print (eval (read))))
The link to McCarthy's paper is broken. It has a closing paren at the end.
billrobertson42··on MySQL - Do Not Pass This Way Again
The article lost me at this.

> Already on MySQL? Migrate.

Got a silly little thing in the corner running just fine on MySQL. Go spend time on it? No.
