bilalhusain··on Scala – The good, the bad and the very ugly
In its early stages Rust used to employ a lot of sigils (people joked that its a language which makes full use of all the keys on the keyboard), but the language has moved away with the cryptic operators and IMHO looks cleaner.
bilalhusain··on Scala – The good, the bad and the very ugly
Your way of educating people about Clojure isn't particularly helpful. Don't make sure that people miss out a really good language, instead take this opportunity to share [personal experiences or impressive writeups about] how awesome web frameworks are on this side of the grass.
bilalhusain··on Scala – The good, the bad and the very ugly
Often the argument is that if languages are superheroes, Scala is trying to be one with all the possible superpowers. When you learn how to use them and have control over when to use them (and for good or bad), everything will be a breeze. But the assumption that everyone will spend time learning the right ways and not use in production before achieving zen is impractical.
bilalhusain··on Flipkart, Amazon of India, has sales of $100M in one day
I am sure they weren't deliberately tricking the customers, instead it is their incompetence and immaturity showing up. They couldn't handle the commotion and steps taken to handle the load backfired (A completely made up example can be that they started the crashed servers but in panic forgot to apply the discount configuration). Disclosure: I worked at Flipkart. I felt that employees are immature.

bilalhusain··on Nimrod is being renamed to Nim
I can't find any official statements about this renaming (there's a BigBreak branch which is supposed to take care of renaming as per a thread reply on the forum[1]) but I assume that people have been citing the name as a barrier to a widespread adoption of Nimrod [2][3].

bilalhusain··on Metriclock
I guess the idea is to make the duration of "second" - of the order of blink, snapping fingers, ... basically to provide a granularity which is neither too fast nor painfully slow compared to what we are used to.

This makes me wonder if instead of splitting in 3 (10:100:100), if it were split equally but in 5 parts (10:10:10:10:10) would it make tracking 5 needles tough.

bilalhusain··on A Heroku buildpack for Rust applications
For those unfamiliar with buildpacks, a buildpack is a collection of scripts which prepares your code for execution by the Heroku dyno manager. Heroku's Cedar stack has no native language or framework support; Ruby, Python, Java, Clojure, Node.js and Scala are all implemented as buildpacks.

bilalhusain··on Show HN: Quick pie chart generator
Nothing fancy, just a few input elements to make life easier (harder?). Other than that its a pretty straightforward wrapper over Google Chart API[1].

bilalhusain··on Why Sometimes I Hate Myself
I am not generalizing programmers. I am commenting on the culture which is unfaithfully becoming a hallmark of true programmer. The problem with culture is that you can remove the core values (that you work hard) and still flaunt the culture to pretend that you are a part of that group. Just like you can dress up and act like a rich person without being rich.
bilalhusain··on Why Sometimes I Hate Myself
If its about explaining the attitude of forming their own cool hangout, I do agree with you. But I don't buy that an attitude inspired by revenge is justified because they were abused.
bilalhusain··on Why Sometimes I Hate Myself
The pretentious programmer culture irks me. As a programmer we are not doing a decorated job.

We take pride in making ourselves different. In showing off ourselves as informal, as rule-breakers. "No, we will come to office at 3 PM. In half-pants." We perceive non-programmer employees as mere mortals. And, oh, we are so awesome!! We build our own communities, worship our own heroes and immerse ourselves in our own society; instead of the immersing in the actual society we live in.

bilalhusain··on I'm Leaving Mojang
Also, I feel that people are reluctant to say "thank you". They'll join if the crowd is cheering, but are hesitant to say it out loud by themselves.
bilalhusain··on I'm Leaving Mojang
Heartbreaking to read what we do to people.
bilalhusain··on Pyston 0.2 released with experimental GIL-free mode
The project is at a very nascent stage. I am not sure if 0.2 can run numpy put eventually it will.
bilalhusain··on Elixir Release v1.0.0
I'll try to cover couple of them. Hopefully, others can fill in:

- funs have an extra dot in the name: not fixed because that will lead to inconsistency [1]

- send operator: removed earlier this year and the operator is reincarnated as comprehension operator (comprehension being more ubiquitous [2]); although, the proposed syntax wasn't adopted

Not sure about funs and def. It appears that not much was discussed about versions in source file and docstrings inside function definition (module doc is already inside); the later one can be dismissed being a common bikeshed in PL design.

So, yeah, most of the proposals couldn't make it because of complications.

bilalhusain··on Elixir Release v1.0.0
For the uninitiated, there was a fairly positive critique[1] of Elixir by Joe Armstrong, the creator of Erlang, last year (at least that's what got me hooked to Elixir).

aside: I was going to refer the goodfilms blog post[1] but decided to check quora first (I've stopped using it because of their login/read only first answer) and there it was! (and it appears that quora has removed the gating)

Also, can you make your references clickable?

bilalhusain··on Show HN: Retention Booster – Increase your users' retention rate in seconds
They are focusing on tracking and taking action for a special type of event (login). A retention email ("Hey, we haven't seen you for a while") is a great strategy to convert idle users into active customers.
bilalhusain··on Show HN: Retention Booster – Increase your users' retention rate in seconds
Great job. You need to fix a couple of things

- https

- http://retentionbooster.com/site/api_addaction?action_name=l... should return a pixel not a text/html 1

- the response when a returning user logs in is currently a 500 error (insert into rb_retentions fails because of duplicate email)

- anyone can login to dashboard with a non registered email or non-email http://retentionbooster.com/site/adduser?email={random}&pass...

- make sure the retention email doesn't end up in spam folder
