Man that's on my bucket list! The hacking a billboard part that is. Where should I start?
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Learning to code, without a computer?
If you can get us a list of personal items that he's allowed inside, maybe we can help you figure it out if it's possible to build a tiny computer ;)
bikamonki··on IP Spoofing
Am I correctly understanding that big/most attacks are against unwanted content? For instance, in my country the two most popular political blogs that make strong opposition to the government are regularly DDOSed. If that is the case, maybe an easier solution would be to make this a software problem and not a network one. For that, I think we already have the tech to make P2P websites feasible. My phone and data plan cannot serve hundreds of requests per second but I'm sure I can get ALL the content I read on a given day from peers as well as pass it along to others. Clearly not a solution for all Internet use cases but a viable alternative to blogs.

An alternative that's been out for a while now: https://github.com/diaspora/diaspora/

bikamonki··on Whatsapp profile picture lookup
Works very well. If you can put this behind an API I could be your first client ;)
bikamonki··on Introducing a new kind of Wi-Fi system
Introducing a new way to spy on you? A WiFi repeater will do the trick...
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?

bikamonki··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
Could FB plug the cord on React once it does no longer align with its core strategy? Sure, it did it with parse.com without the least concern for the community of users/clients. The apology was to leave behind a half-cooked open source version of parse server.

The exact same thing could happen to the React community. I'd say stick to true open source projects and descentralized communities.

bikamonki··on Facebook Ordered to Stop Collecting Data on WhatsApp Users in Germany
Except I do not trust my government. Do you?
bikamonki··on Facebook Ordered to Stop Collecting Data on WhatsApp Users in Germany
When you pay cash your business relation ends there. When you pay with your personal information...it never ends.
bikamonki··on Facebook Ordered to Stop Collecting Data on WhatsApp Users in Germany
You can go get an off-contract sim card, use it on a clean Android, create a fake gmail account in order to download and install Whatsapp. Now you make connections (you add family and friends to your contacts) and start communicating. By now both FB and Google know who you are simply b/c other people in your network, not concerned with privacy, have you saved on their contacts list, pressumably under your first and last name. Using analytics data that you inadvertedly share through your usage habits, both companies build a detailed online persona that will never be forgotten. B/c we are creatures of habit and social bonds, it is quite easy to determine who you are and what you do, by indirect information like your locations (gps), connections (contacts), online presence (IPs), browsing habits, etc.

THERE IS NO ESCAPE. Unless you do what they themselves say you should do if you do not agree with the terms: don't use their services.

bikamonki··on As Our Jobs Are Automated, Some Say We'll Need a Guaranteed Basic Income
The error here is to assume an isolated development of one trend. If AI becomes as sophisticated as imagined, it will make most (if not all) other technologies evolve with it. When talking about manufacturing/production, better tech correlates to lower production costs, lower prices. If you still pay $500 for a mobile phone then, it is more a subject of brandwashing than economics. Same thing with services, medicines, food, etc. In sum: we'll need less money. If that money comes from universal min wage, or from working less hours, or from working more hours at lower wages, seems irrelevant next to this question: who will own AI?
bikamonki··on Heavy SSD Writes from Firefox
Can this be avoided in FF and Chrome with private tabs?
bikamonki··on Sad reality: It's cheaper to get hacked than build strong IT defenses
That is why as a sole dev I no longer offer full-stack solutions: clients simply do not want to pay for the hours it takes to keep their back-ends monitored and secured. Yet, dynamic data is mostly inevitable in any modern web solution so I am increasingly relying on BAAS providers. My gamble is that it should be easier/cheaper for BAAS providers to maintain a team of knowledgeable and experienced engineers to tend infrastructure that runs several back-ends. It seems like a natural step from hey I trust you can run my hardware take my money to hey I trust you can manage my data take my money
bikamonki··on Backbone → React: it’s a people problem after all
I honestly don't see the difference, at least not on your example. What do you mean by: You’d have to replay all user interaction on every re-render
bikamonki··on Hacker-Proof Code Confirmed
Just thinking out loud: if a program can check the correctness of another program against a formal spec, can't it just write the checked program from the spec?
bikamonki··on Reasons not to use Firebase
Give it a couple of years and BAAS will be a commodity...
bikamonki··on Reasons not to use Firebase
Reason #1 to use Firebase (or any other reliable BAAS): it is the next logical step of cloud computing.

If you've been around long enough, you probably had to convince the IT manager of one of your corp clients that it was a better idea to host the company's website on a hosting provider's server rather than in-house. Didn't you?

The argument of shouldn't trust your data to a BAAS provider is just silly: where's your data when you rent a VPS and mount your own back-end?

Maybe Firebase was not the right choice for this particular product, but don't trash it for it.

For me, the only missing feature is full-text search, yet the workaround is not as painful.

bikamonki··on Ask HN: Would you sign up if a Phone Number is required?
Why require the number? So you can send an activation/recovery code over SMS? Virtual numbers and pre-activated SIMs are easily accessible nowadays. You'd mitigate but not prevent abuse nor spam. In terms of security, SMS is NOT recommended to communicate sensitive data.

That being said, only a tiny few of us are concerned about privacy, most app users aren't, otherwise FB wouldn't have a billion users.

bikamonki··on Ask HN: Would you sign up if a Phone Number is required?
Which is to say: everyone has your number now ;)
bikamonki··on The Programmer’s Guide to a Sane Workweek
Where I live IT workers are not fairly valued, the average one can charge and still get contracts is around USD $30/hr. As such, reducing working hours will make it really difficult to pay bills (forget about early retirement). So, instead of working less I work on developing products that bring in passive income. These products are not the next ubers, just small B2B apps that serve local/niche markets. I started this strategy a couple of years ago and now half my income comes from selling my time while the other half comes from selling saas. Furthermore, time is limited so income from selling dev hours can only increase if rates increase or if extra hands are hired. Selling saas does not have this growth restriction.
bikamonki··on Old Geek Jobs: fighting against ageism in the industry
If I compare my me-now with my me-20-something I would definitely hire my me-now. I am now very productive b/c I've developed high focus, I make less mistakes, I've committed to a stack that solves most problems, I reuse my own code, I can see the big picture b/c I started coding in the mid 90's and I've developed the people/comm skills to actually understand what is required and translate that to code.

Experience matters a lot. I would also choose experience when selecting a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, etc.

We have a saying in Spanish: más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo ;)

bikamonki··on AI robots will take 6% of jobs by 2021
It is not job displacement itself that creates a deep crisis, we've always found or invented new jobs. The problem is the speed of change! Just as we use legislation to enforce principles as equal opportunity, we should have legislation to enforce the rate at which companies can switch to AI. I am not entirely sure that this time we can leave economic adjustment to the invisible hand of the market.
bikamonki··on Don't Start Big, Start a Little Snowball
Sound and well written advice; however, I would add: don't expect your snowball to reach über size. There are tons of problems to solve/improve but the great majority of them have a small market size/potential. The big markets are too hard to disrupt.
bikamonki··on Don't Start Big, Start a Little Snowball
Exactly. Timing is of utter importance. Yet, these packed formulas do help to increase the odds of success, don't you agree?
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
So what exactly are the front-end stack haters proposing as an alternative to hack-on-hack? Should we just dev/maintain N code bases of native apps to run on every OS and then somehow connect them?

Haters are missing the big picture...

bikamonki··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
I give it to you: npm is a Gran Bazaar mostly selling crap....but Node is brilliant.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
If you've been codign "since before the web", then you should be able to see the whole picture. The browser is the new VM. Horrible hacks are necessary to test ideas and move forward new paradigms.
bikamonki··on Ask HN: Which language(s) should I learn to do one-man projects and earn money?
How can you hate JS if you have zero programming experience? Try it first.
