bijant··on Nvidia's DG-Net: Dress up people with different clothes/use as training data
Zhedong Zheng works at the University of Technology Sydney, Xiaodong Yang works at at NVIDIA Research, Santa Clara, CA. So you are in fact absolutely right, that they work in countries, Australia and the USA, that as members of the five eyes are involved in illegal mass surveillance. But I’m sure you don’t want to imply that anyone in these 2 countries working for any company is writing software solely with the intention of having it used for mass surveillance.
bijant··on Mailchimp to Sendy: Cutting Email Costs
Rather than supporting a proprietary product like sendy I would recommend using the far superior civicrm which is fully open source, has a great community around it (not used by marketers and seo-spammer-types but rather by ngo's)and is totally extensible to grow with your needs. It is simple to be GDPR compliant by default and is really easy to get started. It obviously has a far bigger scope but you don't need to take advantage of all that additional functionality.

bijant··on Google's Civil War
The Bolsheviks were a majority within the RSDLP in 1903. The extent of their support in 1917 within the wider population is highly debatable but their thought-leadership led to sufficient mindshare to (belatedly) ship the October revolution and scale their product to numerous global markets from the Americas to China within the 20th century. Adoption is currently stagnating while the product is being refactored.

The Bolsheviks, was a faction founded by Vladimir Lenin that split from the Menshevik faction of the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) at its Second Party Congress in 1903. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolsheviks

bijant··on ZombieLoad: Cross Privilege-Boundary Data Leakage on Intel CPUs
Intel has abused the responsible disclosure process for economic gain. Their Leadership was not interested in a repeat of the spectre and meltdown impact on their stock price and made the (most likely accurate) assessment, that recurring news of intel vulnerabilities would harm their stock more than delay and cumulated release. As a result Academic Researchers were denied some of the credit they would otherwise have rightfully earned, because their individual contributions are buried in a sea of similar publications. Research efforts were thus needlessly duplicated. Research which could have formed the basis for subsequent research was unavailable and (publicly funded) researchers wasted time duplicating results. If two researchers discover the same vulnerabilities independently, there should be no embargo on disclosures because it has to be assumed with a high likelihood that third-parties might already be actively exploiting it. The public has to be warned, even if no effective mitigation is available. If for a subset of the vulnerabilities, AMD and ARM are not affected then security conscious users could have been reducing their exposure by utilizing competitors chips.

In this case the practice of responsible disclosure has been turned on its head. There should no longer be any responsible disclosure with Intel as long as they do not commit to changing their behavior.

bijant··on Something really scary is going on in Germany
what is really scary is not the proposed law but the public relation campaign google is mounting against it. It is a (very likely) unprecedented internet lobbying effort involving not only googles advertising network, but also a link on google.de (no longer visible). To a casual observer, watching the short youtube clip or reading the campaign slogan "Willst Du auch in Zukunft finden, was Du suchst?"("Do you want to continue to find what you're searching for ?") it could seem like the government was trying to shut down google search.

It seems like a scary prospect to think of the ways google, a private company, could start to use its unparralled reach to lobby for legislation in its favor around the entire globe.

bijant··on Something really scary is going on in Germany
the pirate party certainly has some procedural problems. they would probably be the first to admit just that. But those problems stem from the fact, that they are trying to implement completly new procedures for political assemblies. procedures that take advantage of modern technology instead of just replicating an essentialy unchanged process from the 18th century. And if they should succeed, it could redefine democracy.

bijant··on Can Revenge Porn Be Stopped While Also Protecting a Free and Open Web?
two ways this will play out: 1. people simply stop sexting 2. one day there will be pics of everyone online and nobody will care anymore (+ because no one will care anymore, google might eventually tweak PageRank so that if you're only searching a name (without words like 'naked') those pics dont even make it to the to top results)
