I did yet I still get the embedded ads (lots of VPNs,“brilliant“ subscriptions) YouTubers rely on to make a living because while YouTube shares Premium revenues with Creators it doesn’t allow them to enable a version of their Videos without „sponsored content“ for subscribers.
And whats more, because the YouTube Algorithm is totally broken with regards to recency bias, if friends send me links to YouTube Videos that are even slightly political, or related to covid, or any more popular category than what I like to watch, then I have to open them in an incognito tab and get all the ads because I don’t want to have my feed filled with that kind of content for weeks.
When I use the App it even features it’s own incognito mode but even though I’m logged in the app, when I switch to incognito it shows me ads. So yea ad blocking is the best option as long as it remains feasible.
If Inflation Markers are up, that increases pressure on the Federal Reserve to reduce QE and eventually even increase rates. When that happens liquidity will be removed from equity markets reducing valuations. If there were a smaller increase in Consumer Prices then the flow of liquidity into equities could continue unabated. That was the expectation. The markets are adjusting to these new facts on the ground.
This is a blatant attempt at using their market power to gain a dominant position in IoT connectivity by creating a parallel Network where Net Neutrality does not apply. If this succeeds, only Amazon approved devices will be allowed on this global Network connecting only to aws provided services thereby establishing a monopoly on non-cellular IoT connectivity.
After Apples recent move in the same direction with their „find my“ mesh network of apple devices being used to introduce a whole new mode of operation to support their Air Tags the Question of Net Neutrality has to be extended from just ISPs to Dominant Platforms that have the ability to create derivative Mesh-Networks.
That is a Thing. The Olympics put Barcelona on the map for many Tourists. Although the Consensus seems to be, that it worked better in the past and best for formerly obscure cities not for a whole country.
Their Youngest Child just turned 18. I wouldn’t expect any dirt to hit the tabloids. They have most likely settled all their financial affairs quite a while ago and just waited for the kids to be out of the house.
Sad to see these things happen but such is life...
lead is terribly toxic stuff, but the lung cancer would most likely be caused by the flux, which you will still find in lead free solder. Which is why You should always ensure good ventilation when soldering.
Bees are just another legacy producer ripe for disruption. With recent Progress in AI and Drone technology the question isn’t if Bees get replaced by autonomous Nanobots but when.
Author of the Twitter Thread is a Computer Illiterate but bought a BTO business machine and was surprised that you have to click the wifi and ssd drop down menus if you want your desktop machine to come supplied with an ssd and wifi. They vented their anger at a company that sells computers „without Internet“ (Ethernet Cables seem to no longer exist).
They then used their Twitter following to put pressure on Dell who immediately offered a refund. I don‘t like Dell, but I like this idiocracy themed version of reality even less. People on hn sometimes criticize Apple for infantilizing their users. It’s easy to forget that most users have no Clue what a Computer is and don‘t want to be bothered by those pesky details.
It‘s not like any one of those politicians knew his Chief of staff. Additionally, he was probably being translated from his native Russian, or speaking mediocre English. It would not have been difficult for any random person to „imitate“ him. The main Qualification would seem to be the ability to not burst out laughing. A deep fake of an actual public figure would be a different matter entirely.
This should include a (2020) in the title.
The situation for the new iMacs is even worse with 8gb ram max. It can't be because the additional GPU Power necessary to properly drive the 4.5k display limited available space on the die for the chip as the ram is not on chip but on SoC ? Is it that the demand for high capacity ram modules is outstripping supplies and Apple wants to conserve what it has for a MBP 14/16' launch ?
In Germany the last two Teams are automatically relegated to the lower league while the third to last team of the higher and the third to the top team of the lower league fight it out in a two match decision.
The relegated Teams usually are in big trouble financially as they have to balance their budgets while loosing a lot of income. If they renegotiate salaries with their players successfully and can increase contributions from their supporters to make up for the loss of TV Money they are in a good position to fight for promotion in the coming year. There are ample examples of Teams getting handed down from league to lower league down to the amateur leagues and never making it back to professional sports. Thats part of the excitement that keeps fans glued to their screens.
Please do! My Issue is that I rarely want to actually read the articles, the discussions are usually much more interesting. Most hn aggregator sites have a ui that is focused on the articles not the comments.
If i had a way to check a week in review hn one a weekend (or some other time) that would be amazing for my productivity;-)
It‘s more than just a bit unprofessional to disclose the earnings of a client on a public forum.
(I take that back if he has given You explicit permission)
It is interesting that the young men often took on wolf clothes. Romulus the mythical founder of Rome was said to have been raised by a wolf. In a different story told by Plutarch, Romulus is fathered by Hercules after he wins a dice game. The Koryos determined their leader through the outcome of a dice game.
Could this be a hint, that the founding of Rome was by a band of Koryos Teenagers ?
Regardless of the absurdity of the claims he is making, this suspension is a sad reminder of the complete breakdown of political discourse in the US.
When even a major Party Politician can no longer spew lies on (internet) television because the dominant corporation deems his lies to be unacceptable, Freedom of Speech is dead. The precedent Google has been setting with this and similar actions is making them become the supreme arbiter of truth, a role they might soon wish they never had taken on. The responsibility to enforce the actual law on their platform is already becoming more than they can chew. What will they do to the political voices criticizing Googles monopoly power ? Will their Videos be banned for minor inaccuracies? Once Your Platform has become a major marketplace for Ideas and political speech, the Standard for how you can police the platform changes.
Beautiful, but what I find even more fascinating is the ad on the page above: "The Wireless Telephone". Does anyone know what happened to the Great Lakes Radio Telephone Company ? Introducing their service in the year Marconi got his nobel price and about a hundred years before the iPhone, they seem to have been a bit too far ahead of their time, or did they succeed ?
The Idea that modern formal systems are a European Invention is a common misconception, but nevertheless wrong. Depending on your definition of "modern formal systems" they were either first invented by the Babylonians, in India or in China but most certainly not in Europe, which at the time was at a much earlier state of development.
I do like his blog. But I‘m not going to click through a presentation without him even teasing his core thesis. A tldr would be much appreciated otherwise I would prefer if he packaged his (without a doubt) great presentation into an article (he already has all the illustrations)
This is really Google's fault. They make it impossible to turn off automatic updates for Chrome extensions from their store. That would be kind-of-ok if they actually had a rigorous approval process. But they don't. The Chrome Web Store has become one of the prime Vectors for malware.
The only way to be safe is to exclusively download releases from the extensions github repo and to manually install them.
I find it hard to listen to his Podcasts because of his "philosophical" questions that often are just a regurgitation of stereotypes. I do listen to some of his interviews, because he gets guests that rarely give long interviews like Chris Lattner, Donald Knuth and the like. He doesn't seem to do any deep prep for any of any of the guests and ends up providing his opinion on things like "the Russian soul" or whether someone is "in Love" with a programming language. It often derails the interesting conversations that he could have had with his illustrious guests. I would listen to more of his podcasts if he would follow his guests lead more and not force them into the (same) mold that he has for every show.
It doesn't matter whether they tampered with the vaccine. They destroyed trust in international vaccine Programs and the Health Workers that are administering the vaccines are facing the blowback.
Has totally replaced Little Snitch for me recently after being increasingly annoyed by it over a decade of using it. This type of software requires lots of trust in the developer and objective-see has earned that trust with the many great projects they provide.
I don’t disagree with the criticism of it being opt-in but I would go further: Apple and Google took months to roll out their framework, they certainly didn‘t prioritize it enough. They are the only parties in a position to implement digital contact tracing natively and they failed us. With great power comes great responsibility. No start-up or government has the ability to implement a low-level cross-platform contact tracing api. As of Today Apple still has not enabled their framework on iOS <= 12 devices even though there are countless people using devices that can not be updated to the current iOS. They have previously provided critical security updates for out-of-support versions of their OS. Why did they not do the same for the contact tracing framework?
That is Wrong and the linked article does not support your Assertion. German Labs are running the same high (35+) number of cycles that US Labs are. The Discussion to define a cutoff Value is ongoing.
The Headline hit me right in the stomach because it was just yesterday that I was pondering whether to build or to order a USB Switch. With much to do currently, I wussed out and just ordered it. I didnt pay 38$ though: https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005001274095928.html USB 2 is more than enough for mouse and keyboard and it has the additional advantage of having an extension button to switch.
As someone of Iranian Heritage, even though I‘ve never been to Iran, because my Father fled the country after beeing sentenced to death twice, for fighting the Mullah Regime, the Ignorance and total lack of emphaty for Iranian Devs and Open-Source contributors displayed in this thread is shocking to me.
People who have nothing to do with politics and are already suffering under crippling economic sanctions as well under their own government are apparently not considered to be part of the „community“.
Giving them the „helpful“ advise to „fight“ their government even though there is currently no active opposition in Iran and every increase in tensions is making the majority of the population stand more firmly behind their government is just insane.
Can‘t you see that the people asking for support are not „enemies of america“ but instead people who consider the Trump administrations policies to be an abberation, non-representative of the will of the american people, who they consider to be their friends and Open-Source-Community Brothers ?
So there should be no protest then ?
Of course it is the point of sanctions. But this is also why sanctions are wrong. As Ron Paul repeatedly said, sanctions are akin to war.
Shouldn‘t one protest the bombing of cities because „that‘s the whole point of war“
