bigyabai··on Musk, the Movie
But Tesla is one of America's roadblocks to scaling EV usage. They cancelled their $25,000 EV plans after the US blocked economic competitors like BYD from entering the US market. The ostensible goal of Tesla is not to reduce emissions through democratized EVs, but to protect their bottom-line and forcibly prevent competition from undermining their profits.
bigyabai··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Alphabet serves themselves, trillions of those tokens are going towards dogshit YouTube or Google search summaries.

Compute is just a parapet. It won't protect you from better, more efficient models from undercutting you on price and speed.

bigyabai··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
> There is a trivial solution that does not impinge on our freedoms

The existence of Nvidia's optional watchdog chip does not in any way impinge upon your freedom to develop and test your own alternative.

The problem is that OpenAI has ostensibly neglected their duty to safety, so Nvidia is stepping in to fix it since they're the "hard problem" people.

bigyabai··on Bill Gates Says Trump Is Wrong to Hold Out Against AI Safeguards
It all feels like rich and powerful people petitioning the state for more money and power. Any regulation with teeth will necessitate regulating open models, which will destroy competition and create another stagnant, cartel-esque duopoly.
bigyabai··on OpenAI halts training of latest models as reports mount of AI agents going rogue
This should be the top comment on every one of these godforsaken posts. I don't want to see a single report about OpenAI hacking the UN until Sam Altman addresses the role Irregular played in these attacks. If he can't provide an honest postmortum concerning their business partners, then he's proving why nobody trusts him.
bigyabai··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
If you think the US elites don't have a Zuckerberg-shaped button to delete posts they don't like, boy do I have a bridge to sell you.
bigyabai··on I was impressed by Jev, please explain why I shouldn't be
What are you allowed to feel when it's old technology?
bigyabai··on I was impressed by Jev, please explain why I shouldn't be
> what software was doing this prior to Jev

BeRT, BART and FLAN-T5, for text classification. All of those models are ~half a decade old now, are based on the transformer model, and small enough to run locally. They're not perfectly SOTA, but perform quite well in embedded applications. Fine for low-stakes stuff, I think.

Image classifiers are a hugely competitive space. You've got BeiT, DeiT, MobileOne, ConvNext, FastViT and several more models that all support image classification pipelines.

bigyabai··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
If the weights are public, then benefits can't be privatized. IMO that offsets the ethics much better than whatever two-tier business model that OpenAI and Anthropic want to feed us.
bigyabai··on Trump Promised the Truth About UFOs. These Scientists Are Waiting
People like them will only stop when they see photographs of little green men. The government will hide truly damaging secrets whenever it pleases, and anyone in denial of the resistance to transparency is just as dense as the optimists who thought glasnost would work.

> We had 1000s of Epstein files dumped.

Out of millions.

bigyabai··on Trump Promised the Truth About UFOs. These Scientists Are Waiting
> “It’s just amazing to think that months into this, we’ve gotten nothing,” said the member.

Epstein files: "You new here?"

bigyabai··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
No (realistic) amount of money can protect an app like this from Alphabet. It's their service, and clients like NewPipe are always at risk of being depreciated forever.
bigyabai··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
I'm sorry. You cannot accuse me of setting absurd assumptions and then outline "the requirement" as if reality is Go Fish and I misplayed my card. Macropolitics are multidimensional, the babies born tomorrow are eighteen years away from reaching the workforce. There are no policy or economic changes that make your children grow faster.

Europe's troop deficit is just as immediate and pressing as the economic and policy problems. It would be nice if we could ignore it, but you can only expand your domestic middle class if you don't condemn them to the conscription lines first.

bigyabai··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Yes, you do. The frontlines of Ukraine are being prepared for literal demographic replacement as we speak. Kidnapped Ukrainian children are attending Russian schools, fortifications and bases are being dug out for them to fight against their own kin.

Are you enlisted? Do you want to be? Europe needed to figure out it's defense plan yesterday, not in 20 years. If Europe won't ally with migrants, then maintaining European sovereignty is nearly impossible.

bigyabai··on Ask HN: Did you not get the warnings about building thinking machines in Dune?
The original Dune isn't about machine intelligence. The Butlerian Jihad, as Frank Herbert wrote it, is a small piece of flavor text that highlights how humanity can cooperate in a post-diaspora world, and justifies the lack of advanced technology. Frank never describes who or what the Butlerians are, and the Tlilaxu arguably transgress even further against mankind without significant punishment or resistance.

It's also worth noting that Frank Herbert doesn't seem to write his ethics against an absolutist framework. The use of nuclear weapons is considered commonplace, hereditary and boring in Dune's future, despite the historic protest against their development. Concepts like Jihad, strong leadership and faith are equally rewarded and punished in the fiction. Paul's leadership succeeds in freeing the Fremen, but it undermines his secular authority and creates an even more violent reprisal.

Suffice it to say that Frank Herbert understood nuance. He would probably understand that LLMs are not made in the likeness of a human mind any more than the C programming language is. Teaching computers to use language is not a step towards Dune's transgressions, and doesn't invoke any themes to me.

Why do you feel differently?

bigyabai··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
It's absolutely not an absurd set of assumptions. The majority of the demographics you're worried about are beneath the replacement rate. They are going to necessarily reach a point where the youth workforce cannot sustain the outsized elderly population or protect them in a war scenario.

If you do not want to defend Europe's front lines with teenage conscripts and geriatric riflemen, you need a way to bring warm bodies into the fold. Refusing lawful immigration will undermine domestic security, doom the elderly and ruin pension funds for future retirees. No sovereign wealth fund is worth losing your sovereignty over.

bigyabai··on US jury says Apple owes record $5.7B in haptic technology patent case
Vibration might be, but the Taptic Engine is differentiated and trademarked as Apple's own unique feature: https://uspto.report/TM/86543432
bigyabai··on US jury says Apple owes record $5.7B in haptic technology patent case
Why do people cry foul like they've lost a limb when OpenAI steals Apple IP, but then shirk away from condemning Apple stealing Taction or Masimo's IP?

The community has to pick a lane. Either IP theft is good and promotes competition, or IP theft is bad and we have to apply the law equally.

bigyabai··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Individually, you have to accept migrants if your personal demographic is below the replacement rate. Otherwise you will never retire, and your kids (if any) will work in a nursing economy at minimum wage.

It's petty and anti-nationalist to demand that your nation destroy it's own economy to fit your arbitrary political mold.

bigyabai··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
They can, at a markup. An imported Shahed-style drone might cost you ~$20,000-30,000 USD if you import it, but building it domestically could bring the costs below $5,000. If your goal is to maximize munition mass, then you use China to supply things like INS systems, engines, Nvidia Tegra boards or camera technology that's harder to build in-house. That's what Russia does with the Geran program.

bigyabai··on Goodbye Google
Oh, that's true. I just remembered that I hate Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Android, Gemma, Google Docs and free CalDAV syncing.

Woe is me, victim of the 21st century separated from my true calling of paying for software.

Edit (rate limited):

Yes, and Tensorflow too.

bigyabai··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
If you're participating in a conversation between adults in the 21st century, yeah. We've got a word for it, even if it's like garlic to the private equity vampires on this website.
bigyabai··on Goodbye Google
> my team’s goal is ultimately to make AI much cheaper and lower-latency, and I don’t think that’s good for people right now

I have a lot of bones to pick with Google's morality, but "democratizing the transformer and LLMs" is at the bottom of my list.

bigyabai··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
> Do you really think driving people with money out of your state will actually be good for you and the state?

If your state is selling 500sqft condos for $3,000 a month, then yes, it probably would increase the average quality-of-life for that state's residents.

bigyabai··on Ask HN: Who is smarter than you that you listen to what they have to say?
I'd tell you, but that would jeopardize my uniquely advantaged understanding of how business and world economics are going to evolve in the next 3, 5 and 10 years.

Good luck!

bigyabai··on The Test
> These are not how actual people live. These are – for actual human beings – very embarrassing things to admit.

It's absolutely how many people live. OP is overfitting their own experience onto other people's lives.
