bigmit37··on Trump EPA won't limit 2 toxic chemicals in drinking water
Will check it out. Last I read these chemcials stay and build up in your body for years and we still haven’t figured out how to get rid of them.

Have countries banned these chemicals and America is just lagging behind?

bigmit37··on India satellite: Student-made Kalamsat V2 put into orbit
How is the biotech/drug discovery scene in India? There is so much talent there but I wonder if they have enough funding. They could potentially be coming up with lots of cures.
bigmit37··on Practical Deep Learning for Coders 2019
Any recommendations for getting up to date with Pytorch? I could pick some cheap books from packt or maybe good blogs ?
bigmit37··on Ask HN: How do you organize everything you want to do?
What are you guys using to sync mobile and pc? I think I may just try this with a notebook and try carrying it around with me.
bigmit37··on Anxiety and burnout: why kids are consumed with worry
I seem to have this fleeting anxiety with me all the time that gets triggered very easily. It seems as if part of me mind is always focused on my body sensations and goes off when I try to focus my mind off my body. I’m also triggered by any thoughts of illness or falling sick. Just reading about how anxiety can cause problems in this thread triggered me. I’ve tried myriad of medications and therapy such as CBT, talk therapy, hypnosis , yoga, Chinese herbal medicine , accupuncture, Ayurvedic treatments, SSRIs, benzos, Xanax, remeron, risperdol etc. Even exercise doesn’t really help.

I’m currently on a very low dose of Prozac for sleep. Most medications help with sleep at the very least.

I still need to try a SNRI but after that I need may try some hallucinogens as I’ve never done so, and people seem to be responding well to it.

I’m currently late 30s and don’t have any physical problems but in the back of my mind I’m always afraid I’m going to get sick soon. I eat bowl of veggies with every meal now, I do yoga prayanamic exercises in the morning and I try to walk daily or almost daily.

As for anxiety ,

I’m not sure if it’s due to my childhood (Dad was abusive and very angry ) or if it’s genetic. My dad has cooled down now so my relationship with him is okay. I don’t have any flashbacks or anything so I’m assuming my problem is genetic?

Nonetheless, I want to feel some what normal. Part of me wants to go into the health field just to understand what’s going on in the body and have more control. I also want to reverse aging as I feel like I missed out a lot of my earlier years due to anxiety.

I only started programming a couple of years ago and would need to become much better at data mining , machine learning to be of help to researchers. Though I’m really curious about lab work as well and really would like more biochemistry, microbiology etc. Ideally I would to get I knowledge in both. It seems most researchers have decades a of knowledge though and not sure if I can be of any help. I’m very curious about these science fields and like to watch moocs to build my knowledge.

bigmit37··on Ask HN: What is the best online course you've ever taken?
I took this course recently. I Iove how he took you back in time and let you experience the importance of each discovery.
bigmit37··on Intermittent fasting: No advantage over conventional weight loss diets
I thought intermittent fasting was better for insulin resistance. I can’t read the article right now but was this disproven?
bigmit37··on From Nand to Tetris: Building a Modern Computer from First Principles
Thank you. Going to see if I can get it from my local library.
bigmit37··on How Our Relationship Survived When My Partner Got Sick
I’m curious to hear more about shaman experience as I have some anxiety-like issues that no type of medicine/ therapy seems to be helping with.
bigmit37··on The healthiest people in the world don’t go to the gym

Interesting stuff! I’m also a little confused as to how you took so much pictures in only a couple of afternoons.
bigmit37··on Ask HN: Anyone else find the new Gmail interface sluggish?
Damn it. I didn’t know you can do this. I’m still not used to the new design. There is something odd about the new interface that isn’t pleasing to the eyes.
bigmit37··on Teaching C (2016)
Can you recommend any books for the more advance uses you stated? I’m currently going through MOOCs and most courses seem to focus on the language itself as opposed to why the language is useful.
bigmit37··on Recovering Emotions After 24 Years on Antidepressants
Sorry for the late reply! I forgot to check the reply of the thread. I’m not used to the no notifcations.

You can send me info at jaimoon2005@gmail.com

We can continue the conversation there as well if you like .

bigmit37··on Ban organophosphate pesticides to protect children's health, experts say
Is there a regulation to how much pesticides they can spray into foods?

If this is the case then non GMOs sounds more appealing.

bigmit37··on No PhDs needed: how citizen science is transforming research
Sure I haven’t taken too many yet but I took general chemistry and organic chemistry on youtube.

For Moocs:

I recommended intro to bio by mit (great intro to how biochemistry and genetics joined together to become the field of biotech as we know it today) as well as medicinal chemistry in edX.

https://www.edx.org/course/medicinal-chemistry-the-molecular...

https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/biology/7-012-introduction-to-bi...

There are more and more biology related MOOCs popping up frequently.

bigmit37··on No PhDs needed: how citizen science is transforming research
Thanks for the reply! Sorry for the confusion : I should have stated biochemistry.

I went through this course (below)which was really interesting. However the course focused more on synthetic Chemistry and only briefly touched upon how active compounds are found and extracted from natural compounds.

I also read about biotechnology and went through some lecturers on YouTube and MIT intro to bio course. The impression I get is biotech (recombinant DNA) is cheaper than drug discovery? Drug discovery seems to have a lot more factors you need to be concerned about (clearance rate, bioavaibilty, binding to too many proteins )that make seem more expensive

https://www.edx.org/course/medicinal-chemistry-the-molecular...

Would you mind recommending couple of books so I could gain some more knowledge on the subject.

I just purchase “organic chemistry or drug design and drug action”

bigmit37··on No PhDs needed: how citizen science is transforming research
With the advent of MOOCs, I’m been taking lots of science courses to get a basic foundation in science. I would love to do research without getting my Phd and work on interesting projects.

I still have a lot to learn and read but it seems organic chemical experiments are really expensive and lots, lots of trial and error is needed. From the drug discovery course I took, robots are used to create millions of compounds to look for potential hits and then even more trial and error is needed as your progress through the subsequent steps. Also these big drug companies seem to have lots of unshared proprietary data that greatly helps them reduce the amount of experimentation that is needed to find potential drug candidates.

Unlike programming , the equipment chemicAl compounds, animal models all seem to be very expensive.

I would love to create a potential drug, patent it but it just doesn’t seem feasible unless you work for a biotech company :(

bigmit37··on Recovering Emotions After 24 Years on Antidepressants
Thank you for this. What food allergy panel do you use to get such a vast amount substances included? I was looking into food allergy panels and I was seeing blood tests for most common food allergies which included only 8-9 substances.

As for the hearing test,do I just request my doctor for one?

I’ve tried lots of accupuncture but never felt true relief. I went to some of the best accouncturists but no real relief.

Most of my anxiety seems to be somatic in form. My mind is hyper aware of sensations in my body and I get a lot of interrupting anxious thoughts that break my train of thought and cause an anxious symptoms.

The main somatic symptom is pressure on my chest which with meditation I’m able to dissolve a little a bit but can never fully open up, it takes too much time and patience and the sensations are too strong. There are also sensations on the left side of my head connect to the chest— mri was negative.

I think intense exercise might open up my chest but I don’t want to do too much damage to my knees.

I’ve started stretching everyday and hoping the head to kneees , hand to floor stretch might open up the chest more. It feels like when I stretching, some of emotional tension in my body gets released. I really need to push myself a little more though.

bigmit37··on Recovering Emotions After 24 Years on Antidepressants
Would you be able to share how you were able to solve your problem and what the actually underlying cause was? Just a brief overview.

I’m currently on SSRIs and they actually do help me sleep, but it’s not really helping with the underlying problems.

As for SSRIs they are transformative for some people, and science doesn’t really understand the mechanism. They seem to think that there are secondary effects that are the reasons for the effectiveness of SSRIs on some people.

However, doctors seems to be too quick to prescribe SSRIs. I’ve read horror stories about people with some sort of iron-ferretin deficiency as their underlying problem and they were prescribed SSRIs instead of getting a simple iron test which would have pinpointed the cause of the symptoms.

These days you really need to do your own research and bring up all these points to your doctor.

bigmit37··on 2080 RTX performance on Tensorflow with CUDA 10
Are there benefits to using FP32 vs FP16? I’ve been dabbling with deep learning but not really sure how much affect higher precision is having. Though more precision is better I suppose.
bigmit37··on Why we need more than “learn at your own pace” online learning
One thing I’ve realized is that there is a lack of intermediate or more difficult material avaiable.Lots of these courses work on toy examples with data already cleaned up and organized.

I wish there were more courses breaking down the algorithms in the latest research papers and actually implementing the models .

bigmit37··on Japan Waves Goodbye to U.K. As ‘Gateway to Europe’ Post-Brexit
This seems to be a colossal fuck up by UK but maybe it’s too early to tell. I did hear some say On a different forum that initially they will be screwed but they will be able to bounce back and become a stronger force than pre-exit. However I’m not too familiar with what UKs strengths are.
bigmit37··on Should you learn C to “learn how the computer works”?

We already get hit with cosmic radiation —- we really don’t need anymore.
bigmit37··on How to create an OS from scratch – tutorial
Thank you so much for these resources.
bigmit37··on Vigilante engineer stops Waymo from patenting key lidar technology
This is really pissing me off as they can essentially patent anything and everything and squash all completion. It’s now an arms race of patents among the tech giants.

I remember reading here how Google was patenting neural network layers such as dropout etc.
