bigfishrunning··on Aging Brains Blend Memories Together Instead of Just Forgetting Them
Sounds like something from https://sebpearce.com/bullshit/
bigfishrunning··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Yup, i'll believe the hype when Windows doesn't suck anymore.
bigfishrunning··on You Know Who Hates AI? Insurance Claims Adjusters
If you were monitoring the power coming into your house, why did you need claude to "put together a whole packet documenting brownouts"? Shouldn't you just have the raw data, maybe highlighted with the offending parts? Or was the prose of your complaint the issue?
bigfishrunning··on Thanks to Lake Ontario, MapQuest is popular all over again
Unfortunately at the other end of that websearch is a bunch of slop, your agent can't save you from it.
bigfishrunning··on EFF to Courts: Don't Rewrite Copyright over AI Hype
So you'll reduce that to just live experiences: abolish copyright, and watch 1 million bootleg Taylor Swift T-shirts suddenly blink into existence
bigfishrunning··on “I just chose words carefully”
A missal generally has bible passages organized by mass date (instead of in the usual order), as well as some hymns and a reference to the order of mass (the things that happen when you go to church)
bigfishrunning··on “I just chose words carefully”
> (Wondering how long I should keep this up...)

Forever, I'm finding it very entertaining

bigfishrunning··on We found a division by zero bug in FFmpeg with a vibecoded fuzzer
probably karma farming
bigfishrunning··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Lol i'm surprised this hasn't happened already. Minecraft is a great platform for scripting as long as you think every single other platform is too fast and convenient.
bigfishrunning··on XCancel and Nitter are receiving C&D letters from XCorp
> In general, if you want people to ever see something created by people outside of their explicitly chosen friends: moderation.

I saw plenty of things pre-social-media that was created by complete strangers. These were mostly things found via search or via recommendations from people I know. Having strangers moderate (and snoop, and have AI train on) the communication I have with people I already know (or people who i meet through them...) is the problem here.

bigfishrunning··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
The requirement for strong moderation only exists *because* of centralization. If I'm looking at a linear feed of content, it has to be curated by someone. In the old days, content on the internet was mostly links between webpages -- the "web" if you will. If i like the content on a page, it'll link to other pages i may like, and I'm free to follow those links at will, and no third party moderation is required.

Contrast with modern social media, where everything is condensed into a single list of algorithmically curated content, and we've implicitly eroded a lot of freedom (and handed control to Big Tech)

All this to say: bring back webrings.

bigfishrunning··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
I feel like this is true of almost everything apple does -- they take something clunky from a year ago and "pioneer it" by improving the UX.
bigfishrunning··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
It still can, but until very recently the motivation for keeping software small wasn't there. I'm still hoping the tide is coming in.
bigfishrunning··on How much of HN is AI?
My confidence in Pangram is pretty low -- seems like a lot of false positives *and* negatives
bigfishrunning··on Don't Wordle
i think it's kind of beautiful that weird is a weird word
bigfishrunning··on The "File" menu isn't about files
Mostly Very Confusing
bigfishrunning··on The "File" menu isn't about files
That's not true; most of them don't represent network interfaces as files for instance. Plan-9 gets closest i think, and it's an outlier
bigfishrunning··on The "File" menu isn't about files
I don't think it's satire, and I'm not sure it's not a good idea
bigfishrunning··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
I would argue that in a post-LLM world, becoming as specialized as possible is the only way to survive. If you have the serious systems programming skills required to write graphics drivers, your talent would be wasted writing CRUD apps anyway. I hope you eventually found/will find something more appropriate for your skillset!
bigfishrunning··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
In my perception, VCs don't really care about goals. They care about a convincing argument "if you give me money, I'll give you back more money". Note that it doesn't matter if that statement is true; it only needs to be true in aggregate to keep the VCs behaving the way that they do.
bigfishrunning··on Optimizing things in the USSR (2016)
If I'm not allowed to extract value, what is the incentive to start or invest in a business? Why bother owning or running a company?
bigfishrunning··on Don't paste the AI, please
If you're just copying and pasting to some chatbot, is it really human interaction anymore?
bigfishrunning··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
The concept of a mass market device is sort of incompatible with the freedoms we generally associate with linux -- Android is really the closest thing we can hope for. It runs a linux kernel, a very non-standard userspace, and is relatively locked down (when compared to a general purpose linux distribution)

I think "linux smartphone" would end up looking very similar -- some UI on top of a kernel with a very non-LSB userspace; therefore the concept is really not all that compelling

bigfishrunning··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
I understand that, I was referencing a quote (often misattributed to Oscar Wilde, I don't know its true source)
bigfishrunning··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
If you think an ethics course is about "racism is bad" or "don't be a meanie" then you weren't paying attention. The ethics class i took in college focused on the philosophical models of ethics from Kant and Aristotle and Nietzsche, utilitarianism and consequentialism and all of that. It's about deriving whether you're doing a "good thing" from first principles, and not some later moral model.
bigfishrunning··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
Except for sex, which is about power
bigfishrunning··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
> Except that it's all Android?

If only this were true. Samsung makes arguably the best hardware, but I refuse to buy a phone with Facebook pre-loaded and unremovable, a second (worse) app store preloaded and unremovable, and a bunch of redundant samsung-branded copies of the google apps. The best android images are as close to vanilla AOSP android as possible -- this used to mean Sony or Google branded phones, except Sony doesn't really market phones in the United States anymore and the Pixel phones are diverging from AOSP

bigfishrunning··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
Why should Linux users have to agree? run what you want, it's your computer.
bigfishrunning··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
It's better when it isn't, so that you have an easy skapegoat for the hallucinations!
bigfishrunning··on An Engineer's Old Cooking Trick Is Going Viral, Divides the Internet
ok, so i misread the censored word. Maybe i'm old; the concept of "trigger words" doesn't seem to be solved by making it harder to communicate in my opinion.
