big85··on Europe built sovereign clouds to escape US control. Forgot about the processors
Not to mention that the UK thinks its legal reach extends beyond its borders, what with levying fines against 4chan, a US-based site with no legal requirement to obey foreign law.
big85··on Overseas fakers using AI videos to push a narrative of UK decline, BBC finds
Such is the way to radicalize people - convince them with propaganda that their way of life is at risk.
big85··on Android rolling out AI 'Contextual suggestions' that learn from your habits
...which gives Google a pretext to record your habits, transmit them to a server, and analyze them.
big85··on The FCC wants your ID before you get a phone number
This is part of the same trend which requires ID to use social media, view adult content, or log into their own computer. The goal is to give government control of computers and communications.
big85··on Some kids are bypassing age verification checks with a fake mustache
I expect camera-based authentication to be removed as it's too easy to cheat like this. Digital ID will be the government's preferred replacement. The ultimate goal is to link everyone's online activity to their real-life identity, in order to make social control easier.
big85··on 'Close to zero impact': US study casts doubt on effect of phone ban in schools
> Researchers at US universities including Stanford and Duke looked at nearly 1,800 US schools where students’ phones were kept in locked pouches and found little or no differences in outcomes compared with similar schools without strict bans.

It's worrying that as many as 1,800 schools are already using locked pouches. Parents are forced to foot the bill for the pouches, at inflated prices because the provider will have an exclusive contract with the school. There's a massive bottleneck at entrance and exit times, so kids are forced to wake up earlier, with detrimental effects on concentration. Plus it prevents phones from legitimate uses, such as emergencies.

big85··on NetHack 5.0.0
Some notable changes in 5.0.0 (spoilers abound):

If a bag of holding explodes (e.g. due to putting a wand of cancellation in it), most of its items are scattered rather than lost

Amnesia no longer causes you to forget maps

Unicorn horns no longer restore lost attributes

Valkyrie ascensions (considered the easiest) are harder: chance to receive Excalibur when dipping a longsword in a fountain is decreased if not a knight, valkyries no longer start with a longsword, valkyrie doesn't gain Stealth until level 3

You can't displace pets into polymorph traps easily to get a super pet

You can apply $ to flip a coin

big85··on Online age verification is the hill to die on
There's an anecdote about an attempt to ban porn in Utah, which cited a survey which found that most people were opposed to adult content. The defense argued that most people will oppose porn when asked in public in order to appear moral, even if privately they are avid consumers.

As proof, they provided records of cable TV pay-per-view purchases in Utah. The defense won.

big85··on Your website is not for you
Perhaps better stated: Your company's website isn't for you, it's to pursue the agenda of your company. Your personal homepage is for you, if you can free yourself from view count as a success metric.
big85··on Online age verification is the hill to die on
Back in the late 90s or so, there was a proposal to have sites voluntarily set an age header, so parents/employers/etc could use to block the site if they wish. People said it would never work, because adult sites had a financial incentive not to opt in to reduce their own traffic.
big85··on The route from Prussian military headquarters to Gary Gygax’s basement
I haven't read the new edition yet. He's also written The Elusive Shift and Game Wizards.
big85··on The route from Prussian military headquarters to Gary Gygax’s basement
When I saw the article title I hurried to mention Peterson, then I noticed his name at the top of the article. Playing at the World is a book so long it was re-issued as two separate volumes, but it's a very thorough treatment of the origins of D&D.
