bhavin··on Google algorithm change launched
I would like to point out one interesting thing I noticed today. I was looking for "gcc optimization flags for xeon".

Following query is from google.com and contains no efreedom on the front page. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gcc+optimization+fl...

Now, the same query from google.ie (ireland site) contains 2 efreedom on the top page!

http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=gcc+optimization+fla...

Why this strange search behavior to a query which has no relevance to user's location?

P.S. I was logged on to my google account while searching, not sure if that has any effect whatsoever.

bhavin··on How Steve Jobs gets things done
"How Steve Jobs gets things done" will definitely get more readers anyday than "A marketing attempt for our book The Talent Masters"
bhavin··on Rent vs. Buy Visualization of Top 50 Cities
Did anybody notice the buying range for many cities was shown starting from 0 ( e.g. 0-100k )... I wonder what that means?
bhavin··on Facebook is what happens to the Web when you hit it with the stupid stick
I don't think its all in vain. Each hate-cycle creates some residual hostility towards facebook. When eventually it crosses threshold (and some better option is available), so many people might jump the ship in a short time.

We had a stream of google-sucks/googles-dead kinda articles everyday just before while now. And now, suddenly all the bad attention turns to facebook since about a week.

I mean facebook had the same UI/policies/uglyness since quite some time, why sudden surge of facebook-bashing articles (followed by google)? I wonder how much of the content from above articles was written genuinely and not with alterior motives.

bhavin··on For what are the Windows A:\ and B:\ drives used?
One might wonder why the first two letters are for floppy and not HDD. If you follow the drive letters, going from A to higher alphabets generally give you evolution of technology (ignoring network map Z:).

A: - floppy C:/D: - HDD E: - CD/DVD F: - External Storage

bhavin··on Our Brains Are Shrinking. Are We Getting Dumber?
Got the following from an article:

According to one of the theories on the shrinking of brain, “The big heads were necessary to survive Upper Paleolithic life, which involved cold, outdoor activities.”

Another theory said, “The skulls developed to cope with a chewy diet of rabbits, reindeer, foxes and horses. As our food has become easier to eat, so our heads have stopped growing.”

bhavin··on New Advice On How to Survive Nuclear Attack
yeah, I understand what's going on.
bhavin··on [dead]
I should have used a throwaway account to make the point and not make it look for karma.

I can't get to the article, asks me to login!

I understand your point. And yes, the discussion that follows each pg repost adds some totally new perspectives/comment.

But then why only stop at pg articles? people should be encouraged to repost all the nice material from past. Since HN is active since years, there would be so much interesting stuff to repost.

I do not understand the approach that when a newbie submits something (useful nevertheless) without knowing its a repost, lot of people go on flagging and commenting its a repost. Why different treatment to pg articles?

bhavin··on [dead]
I agree, [OLD] or [REPOST] seems like a good middle ground!
bhavin··on Why TV Lost (2009)
one more in the trend of re-submitting old PG essays.
bhavin··on How To Make Wealth (2004)
I tried to discuss something similar yesterday, with no response:

the idea derived from some plain observation..

bhavin··on Ask HN: Algorithm arranging posts on HN?
Agreed!

I understand that there's always more chance that if its fully disclosed, it might be used to game the system.. but could stop my curiousity, hence the question :).

bhavin··on Ask HN: Algorithm arranging posts on HN?
umm, the faq on this doesn't really explain the scenario...

the question was something like this... how come a 20 upvote link gets displayed higher than a 40 upvote link when both are carrying similar timestamps?

bhavin··on Myths of Starting Up, Busted here
Went through the post..sorry for less than favorable response, but the whole domain of "X myths/mistakes/learning of startup" seems to have been written to death, its difficult to find any novelty there these days..

just personal opinion, could very well be wrong.

bhavin··on Facebook Finds A New Way To Liberate Your Gmail Contact Data
Facebook 'Liberating' you gmail contact data?

Sounds like Nazis 'liberating' France in WW2.

thought of sharing since it will help other people like me learning.
bhavin··on [dead]
yeah, i definitely agree!

I would say its the curse of getting bigger... in good old days (before HN got wide attention), only genuine hackers joined. When it gets so popular and big that every major tech blogger reads/acknowledges it and HN threads show up in first page of google search within 40 minutes of starting, there's bound to be some 'Media Sluts' coming over who's not concerned with being a Hacker!

bhavin··on [dead]
When I thought about the issue, it became clear to me that one person's 'quality post' might be other persons unnecessary spam..

If you look at all the top stories from RSS, its difficult to call any of them universal spam.

thanks a lot :)

bhavin··on Ask HN: in mess, where to start learning web-dev?
sorry, I tried searching before posting... but it appeared all scattered since the askers were also different everytime.. also some nice answers date back to 3 years or so.. I thought things might have changed during the time!
bhavin··on Ask HN: in mess, where to start learning web-dev?
that sounds a good idea... the JavaScript/CSS and things are biggest pain point.. what to learn first, python or frontend things?
bhavin··on 8pen reinvents mobile keyboard
the way its implemented, thumb is only convenient to type using the keyboard.. and if you're right handed, its extremely difficult to master it with left thumb..

Its like learning to write with both hands if you want to switch thumb!

bhavin··on 8pen reinvents mobile keyboard
I think one fact needs to be understood that the method uses thumb (of a single finger) for all the typing..

I just did a small experiment.. I took the last text I sent from my phone (about 300 characters) and tried pseudo-typing it according to the keyboard the video explains.. and man, my thumb hurts! I would really prefer if there was a way to input text with multiple fingers without slowing down.

wonder how tiring it would be to type everything with this method.
