bguebert··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
Hezbollah has been warning its members not to use cell phones because they get targeted by using them too. Seems like the pagers were supposed to be the workaround for that.

bguebert··on "Tinyboxes finally have a buy it now button"
On their site they say it can run at 220V 15A if you got that.

bguebert··on Ask HN: Where are the paid Linux desktop distributions?
I thought SUSE had a desktop version. They used to sell it at places like walmart back when you'd get linux on cd/dvd media, but its been a long time since I've seen that. There is also stuff like PopOS that comes on System76 computers or PureOS for Purism/Librem computers.

bguebert··on Let's consign CAP to the cabinet of curiosities
Yeah, banks try and encourage overdraws because they make a bunch of fees off them. I remember reading about some of them getting in trouble for reordering same day deposits in a way to maximize the overdraw fees.

bguebert··on Major Microsoft 365 outage caused by Azure configuration change
Seems like microsoft is getting put into the headlines because the Crowdstrike versions for mac and linux aren't affected. Plus Crowdstrike has a history of pushing people onto microsoft tech support when their software causes problems.
bguebert··on These are America's 10 worst states for quality of life in 2024
It seems like their criteria for quality of life are poorly chosen if Texas is the worst quality of life state and is also the one with the most people moving to it.
bguebert··on FBI succesfully breaks into phone of Attempted Assassination Suspect

bguebert··on (Opinion) When Firefox jumps the shark, the call to action is Ladybird
I've also been looking at palemoon and midori, but not for sure yet on them. It just seems like firefox has reached a point where it's not going to get any better.
bguebert··on China's tallest waterfall goes viral after tourist video reveals pipe source
Niagara Falls has been overhauled before too. The water was diverted a while back so it could be redirected for power generation and they control how much goes over the falls and they schedule it so it looks nice during daylight/high-tourist hours. Maybe not as bad as a pipe sticking out of the rock though.

bguebert··on Ask HN: Create Physical hardware to interact with API
I've used shelly products to do this before. They handle most of the hardware stuff if you are coming from a more software experienced side of things. It's basically an ESP chip that controls a relay. They have terminals set up to read switch or button pressed too. The project I had was to replace a garage door opener and have a switch set up to tell if the door was open or closed.

bguebert··on Move over, tractor – The farmer wants a crop-spraying drone
That might be for some crops, but some like wheat are planted too close together to drive anything between them without knocking some down.
bguebert··on US Army researched the health effects of radioactivity in St Louis 1945-1970 (2011)
It reminds me of this story about a guy that was injected with plutonium without his consent. They thought he wouldn't mind since he had a terminal cancer diagnosis (that later turned out to be mistaken). It doesn't make sense why they would do this kind of thing.

bguebert··on U.S. Congress Live Net Worth Tracker
I think a company came out with ETFs for this already. Nancy Pelosi and the democrats have one called NANC and Ted Cruz and the republicans have KRUZ.
bguebert··on Why I love Laravel (2022)
If you put off all updating doesn't that lead to a lot of technical debt down the road? I guess most of the stuff I work with has to work for a long time and putting off updates just makes for a worse pile to sort out later once you find something newish to integrate and now it won't work with the older existing stuff. For us, keeping up to date incrementally helps prevent that maintenance work from building up. I guess it depends on how long you'll be maintaining the code. If it's something that won't need to work for a long time and you have enough devs then you can probably skip keeping things up to date and just rewrite it when it needs updating.
bguebert··on CVE-2024-4367 – Arbitrary JavaScript execution in PDF.js
I mean firefox's built in pdf reader is PDF.js. Also the desktop version of adobe reader used to run javascript embedded in pdfs by default as a "feature". I'm not sure you can get away from it at this point, but it would be nice to have the option to just use a desktop pdf reader that doesn't even support javascript or running any code embedded in the pdf. Maybe my use case is limited but I don't see the point of it. If you want interactivity you can use a website so people can expect that sort of stuff.
bguebert··on U.S. Inflation Data Was Accidentally Released 30 Minutes Early
I guess it just reduces confidence in the people in charge. If they mess up something simple like the timing on a release then how well are they handling their fiddling with the economy which is complicated. Everyone makes mistakes, but some of theirs can have big consequences for everyone in the whole country.
bguebert··on The Worst Website in the Entire World
Its like those policies where the password needs to change every 60 days that was found to actually reduce security because of the count-up-by-one passwords people would use. For places where that's been a rule forever it is really get it removed.
bguebert··on The Worst Website in the Entire World
It used to be that ESXi and vSphere were free to use for a single server too, but not anymore.
bguebert··on 'Vampire drone' can leech electricity from power lines to live forever
Yeah, its weird how they think this wouldn't be used for attack drones. Seems like extending the range would be a pretty big combat advantage. Pair this with facial recognition and you'd have assassin bots that could be launched countries away and still find their targets.

bguebert··on Open source versus Microsoft: The new rebellion begins
I feel like that's already happening with the integration of the issues tracker and the CI/CD actions into github. A lot of newer developers just see github as git instead of realizing there is git outside of it that can be run locally without needed a cloud service backing it. They might not even see a reason why they would want to have control over their own code hosting until microsoft starts squeezing them hard.
bguebert··on Iditarod musher Dallas Seavey kills moose to protect his dogs during race

bguebert··on Metal Prices Are Soaring. So Is Metal Theft
Maybe it was copper clad steel instead of solid copper.
bguebert··on It's so cold, Teslas are struggling to charge in Chicago
yes
bguebert··on We are investigating reports of degraded performance
I think the risk is the extensions that github adds to git like CI/CD and issue tracking features.

bguebert··on Foxconn's promise to invest $10B in Wisconsin is now a distant memory
The article makes it sound like it wasn't free for tax payers and there were a bunch of subsidies and infrastructure costs that were tax funded.

"Foxconn could hire people in the final weeks of the year, get tens of millions in subsidies, and be free to lay them off once the filing deadline passed"

"State and local governments spent at least $400 million, largely on land and infrastructure Foxconn will likely never need."
