bgrohman··on Ask HN: What's the one thing that let you grow the most as a developer?
Working with knowledgeable, patient, and helpful developers who had experience with a wide range of technologies, processes, and coding styles.
bgrohman··on Ask HN: Do you use default top color for HN?
I didn't realize that feature exists until I read your post. Neat!
bgrohman··on Ask HN: What password manager do you use, and why?
Currently using LastPass. Considering trying out bitwarden.
bgrohman··on Ask HN: What steps can one take to increase security and privacy online?
Use Tor? Use applications that offer end to end encryption?
bgrohman··on Show HN: Geekmarks: An Open-Source, API-Driven, Geeky Bookmarking Service
Cool stuff. I'm building my own bookmarking service right now with a similar feature set. It supports tags, groups, search.

I've thought a lot about offering it as a service, but I've decided against it for now for a few reasons:

- Pinboard already exists and is super cheap with a ton of features.

- I don't actually want to scale the service to support other users.

- I don't actually want to handle maintenance/support for other users.

- By limiting it to only myself, I can make it work exactly like I want it to and keep the cost really low.

bgrohman··on Get Superhuman Abilities with Biohacking
The "Where This Is Headed" section sounds mostly like science fiction to me. But, hey, if someone does figure out how to give people the ability to photosynthesize from sunlight, sign me up ;)
bgrohman··on The Anti-Hero of CSS Layout – “display:table” (2014)
My experience has been quite opposite. In fact, most of the HTML I've worked on was written by developers whose primary focus is server-side Java.
bgrohman··on The Anti-Hero of CSS Layout – “display:table” (2014)
For what it's worth, the author mentioned that CSS Flexbox would also work, but the market share of IE 9 was too high at the time for him to use. That was 2014, and now the market share of IE (especially IE 9) is drastically lower.

bgrohman··on Ask HN: What book(s) do you wish existed?
Check out The School of Life[1].

"We offer videos, articles, products, events and services concerned with how to live wisely and well."

Also, philosophy in general sounds like what you're after.

bgrohman··on What should you think about when using Facebook?
I've been tempted to look into things like ownCloud (https://owncloud.org/features/), but I just haven't been excited by what I've seen so far. What I'm thinking of is more of a single user web app that I build myself so that a) it does exactly what I want and nothing more, b) I know exactly how it works and what it does with my data, and c) there are no other users to support.
bgrohman··on Ask HN: Which book have you re-read recently?
Check out http://lesswrong.com/

Also, Eliezer Yudkowsky wrote a book called Rationality: From AI to Zombies.

bgrohman··on What should you think about when using Facebook?
That's true. I've been considering the idea of building my own personal replacement for several Google services - Keep, Drive, and Photos mainly. Haven't decided it's worth the effort yet.
bgrohman··on What should you think about when using Facebook?
Google Photos works well.
bgrohman··on TiddlyWiki: a local, single-page wiki
I want to give vimwiki a try, but I need to be able to also use the wiki (read, search, navigate, write) from mobile. That's the only thing keeping me from trying it. I think I could store the files in Dropbox and at least read them from mobile.
bgrohman··on Standard Notes – A notes app with a focus on longevity, portability, and privacy
I've been using Google Keep for quick, short-lived notes and Google Drive for long-lived notes. If Google would add support for tagging files in Drive, I'd be able to switch to it completely.

At one point, I used a directory of text files synced with Dropbox, vim to edit, and a few bash scripts and vim functions for tagging and searching. It worked well except on mobile.

bgrohman··on Ask HN: What's it like coming back to Windows from OS X?
I'm in the process of switching back from osx on a Mac mini to a laptop dual booting Windows 10 and Ubuntu. I've been using Ubuntu almost exclusively. There are very few things I miss, actually. In fact, I'm struggling to think of any now that I think about it.
bgrohman··on Ask HN: What do you use to build micro-front ends?
Multiple Angular SPAs that live at different URLs (e.g. one at /admin, one at /foo, etc). The apps use shared Bower components as needed for common functionality such as the navigation components. Clicking on a nav link from /admin to /foo is actually a full page refresh that loads a different Angular app.

Cool, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for sharing!

Hey, thanks! I appreciate your feedback. That's a good suggestion.

The Work Explorer - http://theworkexplorer.com/

It's a personal photojournalism project to learn more about different occupations and the people who work in them.

"We spend about 30% of our waking adult lives working. During that time, many of us experience only a small fraction of the available varieties of work. We may have some understanding of the occupations held by our friends, family, and coworkers. Outside of this subset of jobs, we likely have little insight into the work lives of millions of other people.

Why do we work? How did we choose our occupations? Are we happy with our jobs? I created The Work Explorer to answer questions like these through interviews and photos. I hope to find interesting stories, jobs, and people along the way."

bgrohman··on Developer Anxiety, we’re not alone
I'm curious what you and others think - would working in a software development organization in a non-developer capacity (management, QA, documentation, etc) have an effect on your stress levels?
bgrohman··on Developer Anxiety, we’re not alone
What are you planning on doing instead of software development?
bgrohman··on BuzzZap, debating.
Interesting idea.

Why does my username have to be less than 11 characters?

bgrohman··on Show HN: Felt – Personal, handwritten cards mailed from your iPad
This looks like something I could use! When does the Android version come out?
bgrohman··on Show HN: Summaries of interesting content, written by people
As a user, how do I know that the summary I'm reading is an accurate reflection of the article? Do you have any plans to validate the tl;dr entries? Have you thought about a rating system to allow users to rate the tl;dr entries?
bgrohman··on Why does iTunes 10.7 try to contact the domain bogusapple.com?
Could be. I don't know much about the internal development practices at Apple. One has to assume they have strict development and testing guidelines, but you're right - it is possible that some programmer hammered this in, and the change slipped past the code review and testing phases.
bgrohman··on [dead]
So have you already started, and you're thinking of asking for additional equity, a title change, or something similar? Or are you still negotiating before starting?
bgrohman··on A (Controversial) view on PCs are fast enough
But none of this means all possible applications have now been invented and more performance is useless.

Who is saying that increasing performance by coming up with more efficient software is useless?

bgrohman··on Why does iTunes 10.7 try to contact the domain bogusapple.com?
Right. I should have been more clear in my statement. I meant that, since Apple clearly doesn't control the domain, I find it hard to believe that they would use it intentionally.
