bfwi··on NASA, Boeing ink $2.8 billion deal to develop SLS rocket for deep space mission
This article makes it sound like this project is the only chance for the US to launch manned spaceflights again. Clearly, the Dragon capsule has a much better chance of doing this before the SLS. I wonder if Space X is simply not very well known.
bfwi··on The AI boss that deploys Hong Kong's subway engineers
Out of curiosity, how does the off-the-shelf software solve scheduling problems? EDIT: Nevermind, another comment pointed out integer programming
bfwi··on Fireworks filmed with a drone
I think noise reduction is an important feature do pursue by drone manufacturers. Multicopters are very noisy at the moment.
bfwi··on Developers: stop re-AOLizing the web!
I don't know why the developer of Mailbox decided to only support Gmail and Apple iCloud. But I do know that making an IMAP client is extremely painful. I once had to, and I can't remember having to deal with a more confusing or frustrating interface.
bfwi··on New RFS: One Million Jobs
List of companies/organisations on that scale: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_employers
bfwi··on Ask HN: Local vs. remote salary gap
As I read this, Buffer doesn't pay remote employees less. Rather, you're payed more if you work from expensive cities (eg. Hong Kong), than if you work from cheaper cities (eg. Bucharest)
bfwi··on SSH Tricks
Any list of 'SSH tricks' should contain: 'ssh -D 2001 user@host.com'. This creates a SOCKS proxy on localhost:2001 that goes through host.com. For example, I use a digital ocean instance hosted in the US to tunnel through, so that I can watch hulu (I'm from Europe).
bfwi··on Things I learned as an engineer that I wish I had known in grad school
You're so fucking right. I still like vim though.
bfwi··on How Denver Is Becoming the Most Advanced Transit City in the West
It seems no article can positively describe a city, without mentioning that it's also a tech cluster. Is there a city that doesn't claim to be a tech cluster? We need to recalibrate that term.
bfwi··on A Hacker News for grad students?
It's possible to create your own Hacker News/Reddit clone using Telescope (http://telesc.pe/), which is built on Meteor. Of course the challenge will be to build the community that makes such a site useful.
bfwi··on Django 1.7 RC1
I don't think that many people care about server-side templating anymore. Some excellent JS frameworks has done away with that.
bfwi··on Everything Is Bullshit: A Book by Priceonomics
Can you buy it in an ebook format other than Kindle?
bfwi··on Best of Vim Tips
I really like vim and use it every day, but I'm honestly never going to commit all this to memory.
bfwi··on Best of Vim Tips
Hah, I didn't think of that! Just before reading this comment I was working along in the editor, furiously pressing j/k. I'll put this to use immediately.
bfwi··on Drone-assisted Swiss construct virtual 3D castle
I wonder when we'll see Google Drones, taking pictures of buildings. Google Maps could become extremely detailed that way.
bfwi··on Silicon Valley and the Edtech Revolution
How effective are MOOCs really? I'm not saying that they're not effective, I'm simple asking the question.

Are people getting hired based on a resume of a MOOC education? Do you know anyone who really learned a subject by taking a MOOC? If so, that's fantastic.

bfwi··on Physicist offers $10,000 for anyone to scientifically disprove climate change
Exactly. This is pointless.
bfwi··on The Entrepreneur Who Captivated Me
Are some of the fellows' projects made available as open source? I'd really like to see some sample data science projects and what they're about.
bfwi··on France Seeks to Shed Reputation for Rudeness to Woo Tourists
I'm running into a paywall. But, I just went to Paris and all the parisians we met (waiters, store owners, etc.) were really nice. I've been going to Paris for quite a few years, and I think the new generation is way more hospitable than the last. Good on them.
bfwi··on Fast scraping in Python with Asyncio
You can also use grequests (originally a part of requests). It has a grequests.map() function, that I use exactly for this scenario.
bfwi··on What if Google bought Detroit?
I'm not sure you can buy the right to legislate as you want, even if you own all the property in a given city.
bfwi··on Stop thinking up startup ideas [presentation]
This is after they are exposed to the MVP. At this point the solution isn't hypothetical, only the premium version is.
bfwi··on UK Court of Appeal rejects Tesla's appeal in BBC/Top Gear case
Exactly right, in that eletric and petrol cars are not the same. They have a different feature set. Electric cars will be worse in some areas, and better in others. A lot of people have a hard time estimating the value of electric cars, because they are very different from what they are used to. And people usually don't like different.
bfwi··on Bitcoin rises from $14 to $40 in two months
I sold at $22 thinking the bubble was going to burst soon. Damnit.

There's an understanding that a few big players have a lot of the total amount of bitcoins in circulation. This price must be extremely tempting for them to sell at. That could cause a crash like last time. I would be careful of buying at the current price.

bfwi··on Dennis Tito's mission to Mars
You're right, it's not going to teach us much about Mars. But it's going to teach us how to get humans from Earth to Mars. That's pretty valuable in my opinion.
bfwi··on Dennis Tito's mission to Mars
Trying to actually get to Mars will surely push technological advancement needed for space travel. It will also inspire people to get involved in space travel.

While this mission might not produce other results than getting better at space travel, I definitely see the point of it.

bfwi··on Microsoft owes Denmark $1B in taxes
The article also states that the irish subsidiary is owned by companies in Bermuda and British virgin islands, which is where the profits go.

Is it easy for Microsoft to get this money back into the US? And how?

bfwi··on Microryza (YC W13) - crowdfund science that changes history
I think "ordinary" people might be poor judges of good science research. I'm an engineer with a curiosity for many kinds of science, but even I would find it hard to determine whether a research project is promising and realistic.

The realistic but grounded research projects probably won't be as popular, as the "Put a man on Pluto" sort of projects.

The crowdfunding could easily go to the "wrong" projects.

bfwi··on Why firing brilliant assholes is required to build a great engineering culture
You shouldn't stop at assholes. People who make it hard to work together or people who communicate poorly, are so incredibly frustrating. It doesn't matter how technically capable they are, it's going to hurt the team effort.
bfwi··on Sorry, Geeks, Microsoft Excel is Everywhere
A year ago I graduated and started working in the corporate world. Damn Windows and MS Office all around. I realize now, that at university I was living in a bubble of nice, free software. And if you had a problem you programmed your way out of it. Now I use Excel all the time.

Good thing I have side projects.
