bevan··on Eggs Not Always What They're Cracked Up to Be
Or feeding cows what they "naturally" graze on, namely, grass. Grass-fed beef has substantially more omega-3s than the grain-fed beef we eat today.

Even we humans have a ton more omega-6 in our tissues than we did before, largely because of our diets. In 1961, we ate diets of 5.8% omega-6s, and our adipose tissue concentrations of n-6 were 9%. Today, Americans eat around 9% of their energy as n6 fats, and they are 23%+ of our fat tissue!

Hi! I'm the founder and I'd really appreciate your feedback. How could the site be improved?

PaleoClaims is a new way for people to investigate health issues. There currently isn't a single place where evidence for health claims accumulates and can be easily viewed, which is why I built the site. The point isn't to prove or disprove the Paleo Diet per se (the Paleo focus is just a starting point).

Oh, and please add papers to claims!

Thanks! Bevan

bevan··on Why Walking Helps Us Think
I'd disagree that it can be summed up as "increased heart rate". As you rightly point out, increased heart rate can be achieved by other things that don't necessarily seem to be beneficial. Increased heart rate is just one side-effect of exercise, others being breathing more rapidly and perspiration. It seems like the mechanism of action is something else.

I thought the journal articles linked to do a good job of substantiating the author's claims.

Awesome! Just sent in my application.

Curious how you found a house, is it an Airbnb rental? Thinking about organizing a getaway myself this winter.

bevan··on Proof Market: Submit Coq proof, get paid with Bitcoin
I created a marketplace for small coding tasks where buyers pay upfront when they post a code bounty (bountify.co). In practice, the pay-upfront model has worked well- there have been no disputes after several hundred bounties, and about 90% of bounties have received working solutions. However, bountify's domain (coding tasks) is probably better suited to upfront payment than proofmarket's. It's easy for code buyers to estimate the difficulty / value to sellers of small coding tasks, so buyers are reasonably assured of getting a solution within the one-week time limit. It seems like proof buyers would have a harder time estimating the difficulty of creating a proof, and that they might therefore be dissuaded from posting btc up-front for fear of nobody furnishing a solution.
bevan··on You Can Now Send Micro-Transactions With Zero Fees On Coinbase
Coinbase has been doing cool stuff recently (fancy new hire, css tweaks, this story) but their base product needs work, and their support is weak.

I have yet to receive responses to two support emails I sent several months ago, one of which regarded a transaction that disappeared from my account, leaving me with less BTC than I had before.

Also, the last time I checked, their API callbacks were simply not functioning. No answer from support.

Furthermore, their transaction confirmation emails often send days late (and sometimes repeatedly, I think). It's very startling to see that you "just sent" x btc, forcing you to go through your transaction history on the site.

There are other small bugs/issues I have with the product as well, none of which seem like they'd be too hard to fix.

I hope they hire support and fix those bugs before they add the next cool features / hires.

Ironically, they could be the last ones standing if a disease sweeps the rest of the world.

On another note, it would be interesting to know what they eat, and to know the incidence of chronic disease in their culture. The results would likely be surprising: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weston_Price

bevan··on Show HN: Get an SMS when your site is posted on HN (made for $50 on Bountify)
I commissioned this Rails app for $50 on Bountify.co. I'm also the founder of Bountify, and am trying to demonstrate some cool use cases. Please let me know if you have any feedback on either site!
bevan··on Show HN: I send out a weekly CS topic overview and code interview question
Looking forward to this- the last couple similar services (periodical design/coding challenges) that I've signed up for fizzled out after 1-2 weeks. Hope this one sticks around!
bevan··on A Hacker News vote button
This button is great, but the button server at hnbutton.appspot.com (which queries the search API) is frequently over its quota, which means the button doesn't appear / work a lot of the time.

It's easy to set up your own (free) button server though. Here's how: https://bountify.co/blog/host-your-own-hacker-news-button-se...

bevan··on Bountify – Crowdsource small coding tasks
If the bounty poster requests code, they would verify it by running that code on their own. Most bounty creators are programmers themselves, so that is not a big issue for most users. Non-technical users have posted bounties as well, but they generally request deliverables that are easy to verify, such as complete html pages or website widgets they can drop into an existing page.

An unscrupulous bounty creator could indeed steal a working solution and post it as their own. However, any attempt would be quite obvious, as there is a "Timeline" for each Bounty that shows every revision of every solution in the order it was created. In practice, there have been no disputes or stolen solutions on the site thus far.

Hope that answered your questions!

bevan··on Bountify – Crowdsource small coding tasks
Hi everyone, I'm the creator of Bountify. I'm very grateful for all your comments! A great deal of the site's current features were built based on feedback from HN, so if you have any other suggestions for making the site better I'd greatly appreciate it.
bevan··on Bountify – Crowdsource small coding tasks
Thanks for the feedback! That's an interesting idea. Right now, registered users can click "I'm working on it" on a given bounty to privately signal to the bounty creator that they have started work. I was hesitant to make the list of current workers public because it might dissuade other would-be solution providers from answering, since they might assume that the other user is almost done with the problem (when they might not have done anything at all). I might add in some kind of "I'm working on it" track record for each user, so people can see how often they actually solved problems they said they'd be working on. Thanks for bringing that up.
bevan··on Bountify – Crowdsource small coding tasks
Right now users have the option to donate their bounty winnings to charity, which some are doing.
bevan··on Bountify – Crowdsource small coding tasks
If you donate your winnings to charity (a feature provided on Bountify), there are no accounting issues to worry about.
bevan··on Bountify – Crowdsource small coding tasks
Thanks for the feedback. I'm considering revising the bounty amount options and will most likely remove the $1 category.
bevan··on Bountify – Crowdsource small coding tasks
Most users, including myself, provide solutions for fun. Look on StackOverflow; a lot of answers are very involved, and it's a free service. Bountify is like a Stack Overflow for code tasks, with a bonus of beer money if your solution is selected. Bottom line is that it's mostly for fun, as the bounty amounts are trivial wherever you live.

Hi @olegp, I'm the founder of Bountify. Thanks for the kudos! Unfortunately, the only way to get the user's email and github url is to request the "user" scope, which has write access. Bountify will never edit your Github account, but I understand that's besides the point, it's a terrible thing to ask for. I plan to work around this ASAP, as I imagine it's dissuading quite a few would-be users. Thanks for the feedback!
bevan··on Bountify - Crowdsource small coding tasks
Hi ing33k, I'm the creator of Bountify. Thanks for trying it out! In response to your comment, solutions are versioned, and there is now a Timeline feature for each Bounty, where you can see each edit made to each solution in order of creation. You can also see diffs for each solution. Let me know if you have any other suggestions!

bevan··on Bountify - Crowdsource small coding tasks
Thanks for the feedback.

1) I'll add a filter for open bounties.

2) It would be nice if payment could occur after a solution is accepted, but in practice that presents some thorny issues. Notably, how would I ensure the bounty creator pays after they receive a working solution?

3) What would you suggest as a more appropriate fee schedule? Considering expenses, of course :)
