bestes··on Idea Guy Looking for Developer
There seems to be an assumption that idea guy == business guy. Also that idea guy has no knowledge or understanding of anything technical. And that somehow idea guy is always trying to scam you.

I think ideas are a skill just like anything else. Most people can design a web page. Not everyone can design a good web page. Most people can or can learn to program, but that does't mean they can develop a good site (this one is a bit more of a stretch).

As a converse, I know quite a few (very good) developers who have ideas, but those ideas suck. And so do their UIs. And their marketing plan.

bestes··on Lockitron (YC S09) Lets You Unlock Your Door With Your Phone
Getting rid of a key in my pocket would be a big win. Once the lock can be controlled via the Internet, it would enable things like location sensing (so my door would unlock for me, or whatever)

I would love this to replace my Volvo key. It's as big as the iPhone (kidding - but, it is big)

bestes··on New iMacs run fans at full on all drives other than Apple supplied...
A few points: I just replaced a HD in an iMac and saw that sensor cable. What do you think the chance is that I put it back in the right spot (on the new, different drive)?

The failure mode for a temp controlled fan should always be full on.

Macs from #1, Plus, SE all the way to the current models have been unique and required some special tools. Anyone who takes apart Mac has a full set of Torqx bits. I don't see much difference between a case splitter and a suction cup.

My guess as to the new sensor is that it is better than the ones inside the drive. Or measures what matters, like external drive temp (just guessing). Apple has had their own firmware on drives forever. This has only precluded upgrades, etc. In a few cases and usually for good reason.

So, I think this is like any advance. I hope I'm right.

bestes··on Divide and Concur - testing code at etsy
Sounds like you've developed a great system/process here. Are you a developer or QA? Are there two groups or even just a person with testing as their responsibility?

Have you ever had people mark tests @flaky just so they could deploy (and that later caused grief)?

I would love to hear more.

bestes··on The cost of cloud hosting vs. colocation
I had Dell's 24x7x365 4 hour, on-site service contract for a rack of 16 identical 1U servers. "4 hours" was for them to respond to my call (phone or email, I can't remember). Their response was not showing up on-site with the part, but asking me to run a long series of tests, including brining the machine down, swapping out parts, resetting the BIOS, etc. Once I did all that, they ordered the part, then scheduled a delivery. It was 3-4 days, minimum, to get something fixed.

For the $1,909 price per server: I followed the link to Dell's site and tried to configure the R515 for myself. I added the second processor and left it set to the worse one, added the cheapest 16GB memory option, the redundant power supply and rails. That was $1,999.

A single, 250GB HD seems a bit "lite" for a server, even for one that does mostly processing. I didn't look into the networking or anything. I'm guessing at least another $1k to make it reasonable, probably more like $2k.

bestes··on Apple and the TV industry
Or, maybe, you have low expectations?
bestes··on If average salaries are 80-100k why does everyone keep getting 40-60k offers?
Palm and paper planners Apple and low to mid level print shops Apple and CDs Netflix and DVD/Bluray (in progress...) Amazon Kindle and paper books

This would be a fun list to really spend some time on

bestes··on Ask HN: Your Dev Environment
His MB is limited to 2GB. I was in this situation and was able to put off an upgrade for a while with an SSD. I also moved the SSD to the new machine, so it was/is a good investment. Swapping wasn't even too painful with the SSD. Highly recommended (SSD, that is)
bestes··on Palm's software chief quits
Why would you assume Palm is worse off because of this?
bestes··on “There is no longer enough mail to sustain six days of delivery.”
This is one of the few cases where I think making a law would be a good thing. It sucks that things like closed-captioning have to be forced, but it seems they rarely happen naturally. Maybe because everyone knows the law is coming, so why bother (because you will have to change your scheme)?
bestes··on CSS vendor prefixes considered harmful
I love PPK's new writing style.

Most of the comments so far seem to be arguing a few specific details; I think that misses the point. PPK is arguing (in an over-the-top way, which makes it more fun to read) that convergence sooner rather than later is a good thing. For some of the more clearly defined properties (like border-radius), the time is NOW.

His characterization of the goals of browser developers seems to be right on as well. It will probably change again over time, as most competitions do, but today the top competitive advantages seem to be performance, stability and standards compliance. So, the mindset from the last generation of competition (differentiation) is no longer appropriate.

bestes··on The subtleties in outsourcing using RentACoder
I used oDesk and found that because it is a corporation, I don't need to send them a 1099. And, because all the people work for you through the company, you don't have to do anything special.
bestes··on Memo to CEOs & Founders: Stop Being Such Cheap Bastards
I am doing a SAAS and not for developers. I'm not sure how it came across that way?
bestes··on Memo to CEOs & Founders: Stop Being Such Cheap Bastards
This is a big part of the reason I'm doing a startup. I worked for a company pre-IPO (back on the good 'ol days) and saw very little actual cash.

I'm paying for the sins of others now: I have heard nothing but snickers or outright laughter when I offer equity.

Net-net: single founder, no chance of getting any real talent on board (I'm way past the college buddy thing), all taxes and fees, like incorporation, due up front, my wife is about to divorce me because of the stress.

But, I would still rather do the startup than anything else. At least I have a chance to make some big money, whereas that chance is near zero at a job.

bestes··on How a Tax Law Helps Insure a Scarcity of Programmers (1998)
I'm not sure wasting a year of my life is really the right solution to this problem. Or, any of the other "solutions."

My wife falls into this category. First (years ago), she just worked as a consultant via her sole proprietorship. Then, she had to start getting insurance policies. Then, she incorporated. Now, her corporation does work for another corporation that has a contract with the corporation she actually works for.

It's a bad law and it should be removed.

bestes··on Will single founders please stand up?
I'm also single founder. I've spent quite a bit of time looking for a co-founder and would like a co-founder, but at this point, I figure I just need to ship something and worry about it later.
bestes··on Performance / Price for CPUs
Maybe it just got added? Because I was able to just click on the headings for Price and Performance to sort.
bestes··on Apple's Mistake
I did QA for years (8+) and would love to have developers write a test. Specifically NOT unit tests, but the harder more interesting one. I think it happened once. Or, was it twice?
bestes··on Don Dodge: fired from Microsoft, hired by Google
I just don't believe him. If someone in tech says they have never used Gmail, they had better spend some time explaining _why_.
bestes··on Gity (mac git gui)
How about remote mounting a filesystem using sshfs. I have found this is a big problem on SL. The MacFUSE beta allows it to work at all, but performance can be terrible. I'm trying ExpandDrive now, but it's $49 and performance could still be better.
bestes··on Lessons from Rackspace's downtime
Complexity costs. It costs money and it costs downtime. Look at Google: they have redundant everything, super-smart people, super good operations and still have some downtime.
bestes··on Ask HN: Can you make a voting/rating system without logins?
I've found openID to be far more painful. I decided that I just can't risk making my Google account more powerful in case it gets suspended (for whatever reason, valid or not). So, what a pain to research how to make it work, what implications there will be, etc. I was very excited to try Stack Overflow's software, but it requires an openID and I just haven't gotten around to deciding what to do.
bestes··on System Administrator Interview Cheat Sheet
This is the first I have heard of either Chef or Puppet. They both look interesting, but I can't tell how mature they are. Anyone care to expand?
bestes··on Our Pirate Game is Getting Owned By App Store Pirates
How are people cracking and using cracked applications on the iPhone? Am I just living in the dark by using the App Store and clicking "Install"?
bestes··on Post-Medium Publishing
One reason I buy my video "content" from iTunes is because it saves me the time of removing the forced previews and endless publisher logos and FBI warnings.
bestes··on Why Can’t She Walk to School?
Gloob, can you expand on this?
bestes··on Github and Engineyard part ways
I'm a paying GitHub customer and having big projects like Ruby on Rails and Perl hosted there makes me very comfortable. I figure if they can handle the big stuff, they can handle me! Plus, I use as much free software as everyone else and am happy to help out indirectly (by being a paying customer).

I expect prices will rise soon as well. I'm not sure anyone has mentioned this yet, even though it seems inevitable. Still, I think GitHub is fantastic and I'm planning to increase my usage.

bestes··on Farewell America
Is this actually possible for regular people? If someone, for example, was fed up with the US, where could they go?

You hear the idea of getting out if you don't like it often. But, I think it's BS.

Does anyone have facts that dispute my assertion?

Yes, they did a firmware update. Here is one article that talks about it: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/seagate-barracuda-1.5TB-fre...
