bertman··on RSS is wonderful
tl;dr:

* RSS is awesome

* OP wrote an "RSS Discovery Engine"[1] that

"[...]works by taking the URL to a blog, or any site with an RSS feed, and examining all the posts in the blog’s RSS feed for links to other sites. When a link to another site is found, it’s inspected to see if it also has an RSS feed. If the new site has an RSS feed, then it’s added to the results list.[...]"

bertman··on Is this the simplest (and most surprising) sorting algorithm?
Having read the paper, Betteridge may actually not be true here :D
bertman··on Why Firefox has been in decline for 12 years

bertman··on Inbox Zero Using Getpocket
I'm always in awe of articles like this one where people describe their workflow with the help of mindmaps, flow charts, class diagrams etc. and where they detail meticilous (self-written) extensions or scripts for categorization, readability etc. I usually feel pretty bad after reading them because they make me realise that I'm a lazy piece of shit who just bookmarks stuff and never reads any of it afterwards.
bertman··on “B*tch to Boss” by Mozilla Firefox
They target English, German and French. This is the English word filter list (singular only):

  re('whore'),
  re('slut'),
  re('snatch'),
  re('thot'),
  re('ho'),
  re('cunt'),
  re('twat'),
  re('transtrender'),
  re('shemale'),
  re('squaw'),
  re('milf'),
  re('welfare queen'),
  re('yummy mommy'),
  re('battleaxe'),
  re('hooker'),
  re('prostitute'),
  re('bi[ao]tch'),
  re('be[ao]tch'),

bertman··on DuckDuckGo Email Protection
Imho this looks a bit like they want to push their browser app on mobile. Why not let people join the waitlist via desktop?

bertman··on Update on beta testing payments in Signal
Yes, you can pay with it at a cafeteria snack machine in a Swiss university. https://taler.net/de/news/2020-09.html
bertman··on Show HN: Shrink my video – Opinionated ways to reduce video file size
Looks nice! Maybe you could add some words to you site to emphasize that the video isn't actually uploaded to a remote server.
bertman··on Instant Messaging: It's not about the app
I don't agree at all with the author; imho it's all the about the app! The user doesn't want to have to choose from a rich portfolio of (desktop!) clients; they want a mobile client that can do everything that Whatsapp/Telegram etc can do. Conversations on Android comes close, but there is no such client on iOS. This is in no way news, so I don't really get where the author is coming from?
bertman··on Show HN: Beeper – All Your Chats in One App
Yes, I was wondering about exactly this! A dev response would be much appreciated.
bertman··on TikTok Using DMCA to Take Down Reverse-Engineered Source Code
As mentioned here[0], the repo owner had just uploaded the decompiled apk to github. No "source code leaks" or anything like that.

bertman··on Messenger Comparisons – Threema, Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp
It's a pun: https://threema.ch/en/faq/name_origin

On the one hand, it's harder to pronounce than, say, Signal, and it has no inherent meaning like, say, Telegram, but look at Whatsapp...

bertman··on Show HN: JPEG.rocks – Privacy-aware JPEG optimizer built with WebAssembly
This looks nice, bookmarked! Maybe expose some simple quality setting to the user? As far as I can tell after glancing at the code, the only optimization that's done is re-encoding the image with quality set to 75, so a quality slider would be nice imho.
bertman··on Blocking Pinterest may reduce your data usage
Couldn't help but notice that a "share this on pinterest" button below the author's pinterest rant is pretty ironic.

>or Signal have no means of verifying keys

To be fair, you've always been able to verify safety numbers (i.e. fingerprints i.e. public key hashes).

bertman··on Deprecating scp
From man scp: -3 Copies between two remote hosts are transferred through the local host. Without this option the data is copied directly between the two remote hosts. Note that this option disables the progress meter and selects batch mode for the second host, since scp cannot ask for passwords or passphrases for both hosts.

bertman··on Richard Stallman's Personal Homepage

I'm not a native speaker, so genuine question: is this a common thing or a Stallman thing?

I'm not sure if you're serious or making fun of stereotypes and thus don't know how to respond.

bertman··on Show HN: Plain Sending – Send bulk emails using your everyday email client
Looking at the source code, it looks like a static Jekyll site.
bertman··on What happened to Firefox Send?
>The wormhole send file mode shares the IP addresses of each client with the other (inside the encrypted message), and both clients first attempt to connect directly. If this fails, they fall back to using the transit relay.

bertman··on How to Write in Plain English
The campaign founder's biography[1] sounds interesting:

Born in 1938, Chrissie largely missed out on formal education
and could not read until she was in her mid‑teens.
And later:

In 1994 Chrissie received an OBE and in 1995 she was awarded an
honorary MA by Manchester University. Two years later, she received
an honorary doctorate from the Open University. And in 1999 she
officially joined the 'establishment' when she was listed in Who's Who.

bertman··on A look at the Gemini protocol: a brutally simple alternative to the web
Regarding the quote at the end of the blog post:

"When I picture it in my head I think of the early web as more of a library.
Over time it has transitioned into a shopping mall."
  - chris_f (Hacker News comments)
There are still books in a shopping mall. You have to know where to look and not get distracted at every corner, though.
bertman··on WhatsApp Phone Numbers Pop Up in Google Search Results
From the article:

“My phone number is public on the web. No need to implicate WhatsApp,”
one user told Threatpost, explaining that Click to Chat was convenient
and made it easy for his site visitors. “I did it to make it easy for
people to contact me. Surprisingly, I get very few spam calls,” he said.

However, others were unaware their numbers were public.

“No I didn’t mean to make my number public at all,” one user told
Threatpost. “I set up WhatsApp for my business so people should
text directly without getting my number.”
I think this illustrates the underlying problem nicely, which is imho that people misunderstand how the "Click to chat" button works.
bertman··on All-in-One DNS block list
I really appreciate projects like this because I'm sure keeping these lists up-to-date is not an easy task, and many people benefit from the efforts.

That said: maybe it's just me, but I find their website[1] a bit...strange?

It looks like one of those SAAS startup landing pages, you can pick your "pack of block list" ranging from "Tru lite" to "XTreme" etc...

Or maybe it's supposed to be ironic and I just don't get it :) [1] https://energized.pro/
