bertman··on Fark redesign is now live (2007)
You forgot AI.

What difference in comment quality do you mean exactly?

bertman··on WhatsApp Channels
No, what I meant is that Telegram doesn't have E2EE in groups or channels. Never has, and probably never will.
bertman··on WhatsApp Channels
> but even Telegram has E2EE in their similar offering

They absolutely don't have E2EE in groups, let alone channels.

bertman··on WhatsApp Channels
-Channels are a one-way broadcast tool for admins

-Searchable directory (optional for a channel to be in), but also invite links

-Following a channel won't reveal your phone number to other followers and admins

-Channel history stored server-side for 30 days

-No end-to-end encryption in channels (yet?)

bertman··on Tell HN: "I don't care about cookies” extension bought by Avast, users jump ship
I don't think the behavior is strictly equivalent. From this extension's description:

When it's needed for the website to work properly, it will automatically accept the cookie policy for you (sometimes it will accept all and sometimes only necessary cookie categories, depending on what's easier to do).

This is literally in the second paragraph of the article.

bertman··on How to enable Google's clever new Chrome Reading Mode
Or you could just continue using "Reader Mode" (chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode) which does basically the same thing with a single click in the url bar instead of using the awkward side panel.

Beautiful.

bertman··on Our journey towards the fastest breaking news service
This is a pretty in-depth blog post by The Guardian's 3-persons development team about improving their notification platform to achieve the "90in2" goal:

Deliviring "breaking news" push notifications to 90% of the intended audience within two minutes.

bertman··on Ask HN: How do I make a website in 2023?
>Leverage Astro's unique zero-JS frontend architecture to unlock higher conversion rates with better SEO.

I don't know Astro, and I'm sure other frameworks write similar stuff on their landing pages, but this state of web design just makes me puke.

bertman··on The AI PR Industrial Complex
Yeah, I don't know why my summary was flagged either. I like testing LLMs on article summarization (especially on articles about AI), and found this to be a very good summary, that's why I posted it.

>I mean aren't all these points obvious to everybody?

Pretty much, yeah. Ironically, this makes rants like OP part of the AI PR Industrial Complex.

bertman··on Beware of AI pseudoscience and snake oil
My favorite quote from the essay:

"When they [AI companies] do ‘do’ science, they are still using science mostly as an aesthetic. They publish papers with grand claims but provide no access to any of the data or code used in the research. Their approach to science is what “my girlfriend goes to another school; you wouldn’t know her” is to high school cliques."

bertman··on Chrome Plugin: use Wikipedia as verification of Twitter accounts
Nice little tool!

From their Github page [0]:

  >this plugin was created by GPT-4 in just two hours
It uses the Intersection Observer API [1] to grep visible usernames on twitter.com and then checks the Wikipedia API if the property P2002 (Twitter username) [2] exists.

bertman··on As an AI Language Model
Also, "it's important to note" has forever been tarnished as "AI generated" for me.
bertman··on Are Text Messages the New Social Media? One Startup Thinks So
>a Brand on Twitter acting like a real human

>send all messages through them as a representative

Not sure what you're getting at. Everyone knows that some social media person/intern manages the corporate Twitter account. How would them sending mails or text messages signed with their name be any different eventually? But maybe it doesn't really matter for much longer anywAI.

bertman··on Show HN: SlickGPT
It's a self-hostable chat interface for the OpenAI GPT API.

From their Github Readme:

SlickGPT allows you to run your own local ChatGPT instance, host it yourself or just use our instance if you like. Users bring their own OpenAI API keys. SlickGPT offers them a very fancy user interface with a rich feature set like managing a local chat history (in the localStorage), a userless "Share" function for chats, a prominent context editor, and token cost calculation and distribution.
