bernawil··on GPT-4, without specialized training, beat a GPT-3.5 class model that cost $10M
sorry, noob here trying to make sense of this: you mean you can extract embeddings from the model file or that the embeddings are available in the repo and you can just use those files?
bernawil··on Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?
Argentine here. Italian bidets are just a sink you can sit on, with a faucet on the rear. You clean yourself using your hands. Argentine bidets are also a sink you can sit on, but they have a shower pointing up to your rear. There's basically two ways to go: don't use your hands down there and let the water pressure do its thing, then go back to the toilet and dry with TP; or use your hands and soap and dry with a towel.
bernawil··on Companies embracing SMS for account logins should be blamed for SIM-swap attacks
the crazy part is that Payoneer would let you reset the account password just with the reset code sent by SMS, no need to prove ownership of the email address.
bernawil··on Why Walmart pays its truck drivers 6 figures
I think you mean tax dodging instead of money laundering there. Though, if they are really succesful dodging taxes, they might need to do some money laundering later, too.
bernawil··on Tailwind Isn't for Me
hey no need to make this an hypothetical! styled components come with ThemeProvider that does just that.

  const StyledButton = styled.button`
    background-color: ${props => props.theme.primaryColor};

bernawil··on Tailwind Isn't for Me
it's kind of a trope now in social media for people to look contrarian against current web tech. There are whole twitter influencers out there that are not known for any achievements but just pooh poohing popular frameworks. Just an easy way of grabbing some status, I guess. And platforms love the engagement it brings.

I can see a top tier game engine developer talking with skepticism about current web tech, but it's more often coming from something like enterprise java devs from the 2000s that used to take months fudging with class hierarchies to deliver a basic form GUI. The kind that must take any opportunity to denounce electron apps but would never give up VS Code and go back to Eclipse.

bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
the who is hiring monthly post of this site, and the openAi API!
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
Gosh now I get it! thanks for the clarification, looks like I didn't get the point. Totally right.

The search bar does filter the filters list. So if looking for "rust": 1. expand the technologies list 2. type rust in the search bar 3. select rust option.

But yes, should probably sort it though.

As for old posts, I just overwrite the old data and modify the month label just out of laziness. I Will keep posts history in future iterations!

bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
Well to be fair, the original who is hiring post doesn't do much quality control. Then, the other apps do neither. Honestly, this whole thing came out just of my frustration using one of those and filtering for Remote, reading the text and finding out it wasn't remote at all.

As for quality control, there's a step for categorization that returns some tags. Posts that don't match any are rejected, that's kind of filters for relevancy.

bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
haha right it's like, how did I make it this far without knowing about datasette?
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
you're absolutely right, will get it on a next iteration. Just for now, know you can filter by your tech on the technologies list. Most people are looking for either remote or a specific location, and after choosing one of those honestly there are not that many posts left to sort through.
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
right, I'm feeding each post to several queries to the openAi API. I guess I put "AI filters" so people knew this is actually curated by post content and not just a contains() filter so you get posts with the text "we don't do remote!" when you select the remote checkbox
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
hah not a bad idea at all, watch out for next months update!
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
will probably do on a future iteration! The current job categories where jus the ones could come up with and then used the openAi api to check for conformance (or not) of each post to it :)
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters
Thanks for this, I didn't know about datasette. Neat!
bernawil··on Generation Junk
That old juicer from the 40s was likely expensive "industrial" equipment for restaurants. Even today, if you buy any professional appliance and only give it occasional home use it will last forever.
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters – December update
check it out again for the mobile theme and updates on job posts!
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters – December update
are you sure? Expand one of the Technologies, Positions or Locations lists and then use the filter input, the lists should be filtered.
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters – December update
great idea
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters – December update
ah good catch! the gh-pages has the latest, I had forgotten about it.

Tags should have been coalesced/normalized by one of the steps but seems it didn't catch some. I'll run it again later and see if I can get some more consistency there. Also should add any new posts.

Stay tuned for updates ;)

bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters – December update
Oops, didn't think about mobile. I'll add some css later. Thanks for the heads up!
bernawil··on Show HN: A Who is Hiring app with AI filters – December update
thanks for checking it out! The search bar only filters the tag list, not the posts.
bernawil··on Housing wealth is meaningless, destructive and fundamentally changing society
the mullite bricks certainly are good insulators themselves. As for the concrete ones, they're puffed up with air and also ok.

I don't get how "reducing heat transfer" is not "insulating" though.

Another plus of bricks I left out is soundproofing.

bernawil··on Housing wealth is meaningless, destructive and fundamentally changing society
I think you are thinking of classic red bricks, and maybe where you are from they are only typically used for siding. But in countries where brick masonry is the dominant form of construction there are options: double wall with insulation gap, concrete blocks with the gap already incorporated, those big hollow "ceramic" bricks (check out pictures of favela buildings with exposed bricks), those white insulated blocks...

Anyway, I don't think walls are the main cost here, it's probably the frame itself. Where timber framing is not used they build fewer and bigger concrete columns using "formwork". I don't know if it would be cheaper in North America, though.

bernawil··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
Was there ever a case of a convict getting caught by their direct DNA being found in one of these databases? I thought all cases where correlated from relatives. Government gets DNA sample, asks the databases: 'who do you know that's a genetic relative of this suspect?' and then they go and interrogate that person's every third cousin. You can't keep your family tree private, your birth certificate is out there. Opting out of 23andMe won't help you here.
bernawil··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
see, this is where I don't get it. Can you send your material anonymously (burner email, pay in cash/crypto/prepaid debit card)? Then how could they match your DNA to your identity to sell it to insurance companies, etc?
bernawil··on John Romero on his book “Doom Guy” and developing games at a small scale
interesting! It'd be in cool to see someone use sprites to render a total war like game with historical scale (100k units) though at that point I think the real bottleneck is the cpu and pathfinding though.
bernawil··on John Romero on his book “Doom Guy” and developing games at a small scale
I love fixed angle sprites in 3d environments like the original Total War games. https://spicyburn.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/6/7/126751672/35724...

One of my favorite aesthetics next to isometric RTS with smooth animations like the old Stronghold games.

bernawil··on The casino in your pocket
A "casino" doesn't have a reason, in fact it has no reason at all. The people running it do, and someone with enough power could rig the games and steal from both the customers and the casino, hurting both.
bernawil··on Why scalpers can get tickets
Man, that article dances around the issue, huh. When I say most I mean arena selling artists. Small time artists don't get their tickets scalped. Ever heard those stories of artists putting silly requests just to make sure the organizers complied their terms to the letter of the contract? That's a tell they're not running their own operation. Sure, some do. But if they're touring internationally or doing festivals they are getting hired.
