Hello. I have a non-existing website at https://thomasbergheim.com and I like emacs

bergheim··on Two Years of Emacs Solo
Great stuff. Funny how that whole Ai thing is Ai generated:

No gptel, no ellama, just url-retrieve and some JSON parsing.

The no x no y just z is the new em dashes. And that will probably be true for about a week.

bergheim··on Ask HN: Please restrict new accounts from posting
Some litmus test. I am sooo tired of statements like "No x. No y. No z." and then optionally "Just Foo.".

Who aside from Fred fucking Durst writes like that?

Ugh... Clearly llm generated. This is how internet has become. 90% of posts are variations of tropes like these.

bergheim··on The death of social media is the renaissance of RSS (2025)
I self host miniflux. Elfeed in Emacs, read you on android. The read status syncs between devices and clients.

I have miniflux set up so it integrates with instapaper so I get interesting articles on my kindle. And saving an article will send it to karakeep automatically for permanent storage! (image, video, screen shots and text storage).

Pretty pretty pretty good.

bergheim··on 10% of Firefox crashes are caused by bitflips
Strange. I have a tab hoarding problem, I often have over 1000 tabs open [1][2], and I cannot remember the last time Firefox crashed. I'm thinking it must have been years? I use ublock origin though, which might help since ads do their best to steal your computer and soul through any means possible of course.

I also use a bunch of other extensions though, dark reader, vimium, sideberry... I'd expect me to be a bit more exposed than the average user. Yet it's just rock stable for me. Maybe it just works better on linux?

1: I know this because I installed https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-counter-p... to check :)

2: However after finding Karakeep I don't actually have 1000 tabs anymore!

bergheim··on Intel's make-or-break 18A process node debuts for data center with 288-core Xeon
Yeah this is their make or break moment.

Because if this is not thunder Intel will default.

I promise you. Heard it from some youtuber as well, trust me.

bergheim··on Daily Driving GrapheneOS
so use a card? there is always something. breaking free is never going to be without ANY inconveniences, it's how they build their moat after all. okay so once those two work, one goes to the next thing on the list; "I wish I could switch but I can't use gboard on it and the swiping is 0.5% better than the stock keyboard so it's unusable to me"

(you can use gboard, that was just an example - but it's always these small inconveniences, just like in the chrome vs firefox threads)

bergheim··on Pinterest is drowning in a sea of AI slop and auto-moderation
I do the same in youtube etc if I want to just listen to some music. before:2020 usually works somewhat.

Didn't know about that operator before all this.

bergheim··on Fix your tools
If you like what you just read you should probably never install Emacs.

You're welcome.

bergheim··on Closing this as we are no longer pursuing Swift adoption
I so wholeheartedly agree. You are making a new web browser - akin to a new OS - and you want it open source for everybody but you choose swift not rust?
bergheim··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
Especially with how things are currently, I whole heartedly agree - you cannot operate as a human being in Europe without having a good standing with either Alphabet or Apple.

Absolute madness.

bergheim··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
Hah - both were in my browser history, yes I know them :) I misunderstood and thought you had sent direct emails to relevant parties arguing for why they should be allowed on grapheneos.

Thanks anyway!

bergheim··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
Ah. Where did you send this in?

I wouldn't mind sending in a complaint to both BankID (allow biometric login) and of course DnB corpo edition.

bergheim··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
Been using this for about a year on a p9 pro. It works very well. I hear the google tap to pay does not work, but I've never tried it. However Vipps with their tap to pay works fine. BankID works but not with biometric login, which some things require IIRC. And for some reason DnB private works fine, but you are not allowed in on the corp app.

It's mind boggingly stupid that they lock down apps like this, when you can just open the thing in a website anyway. I can use my bank on some linux distro, crazy that they trust me since it is not Windows - the truly secure OS!

Knew about those things before I started, so all in all I'm pretty happy. I'd recommend NOT using different users for different things (I started with banking etc in one profile, that ended up being a huge PITA and according to their docs it is mostly security theater anyway). Happy tinkering!

bergheim··on Ex-GitHub CEO launches a new developer platform for AI agents
A year ago I added memory to my Emacs helper [0]. It was just lines in org-mode. I thought it was so stupid. It worked though. Sort of.

That's how a trillion dollar company also does it, turns out.

bergheim··on Anthropic is Down
This is a good take. You are right, they rarely do report actual status.

And yes, it probably should have been :)

bergheim··on Anthropic is Down
Fair enough!
bergheim··on Anthropic is Down
I wasn't using it. I was just on hn. And yes, it is the same about all of these services of course, which was my point.

Not sure how "nothing to do with being a large service" and then you bring up Azure and AWS matches though, but fair enough.

Now I know you guys care, so fair game.

bergheim··on Anthropic is Down
Everybody that uses it knows it is down, what value does this add? No context here either. Posts like these feels so much like a low hanging first-to-post-this for karma grab.

It's like.. Popular service is down, let me post that to hn first! Low effort but can still end up popular.

I dunno. Maybe I'm being overly critical. Thoughts?

To add something to the discussion though: this is a reminder why you should not invest in one tool, claude or otherwise. Also, don't go enhancing one of these agents, ond only one of these agents. beads spent the better part of a medium sized country in energy to create a simple TODO list and got smeared in 10 minutes once claude integrated todos in their client.

bergheim··on Termux
With how AI based dev is going, I'm guessing more and more people will discover and start using termux, tmux and the like.

Typing on a phone sucks, but at least modal modes (vim) and unexpected keyboard[1] makes it somewhat tolerable.

bergheim··on Nvidia's 10-year effort to make the Shield TV the most updated Android device
I'm not even sure which one I have, it's old but it's great. Use it for streaming (smarttube, some apps) and moonlight/sunshine. It does 4k with a ps5 controller so well. Love it. I think it was like a 100 bucks 8 years ago? I use my desktop 5090 and basically stopped using ps5 for couch gaming because it looks so much better. Great value!

Also, not that this is better probably (it is Google and Nvidia after all), but it means my Samsung TV is not connected to the internet, so I don't have to wait 10 seconds for the menu to come up because it is busy loading and injecting ads.

bergheim··on VisualJJ – Jujutsu in Visual Studio Code
If anyone uses frontends like magit - what is the usecase for this?

I feel like git is just easy-mode with magit and I don't really miss a whole lot more. I totally get this is you are using the git cli or some such.

Might just be my limited imagination though of course.

bergheim··on Epstein: Gates caught STD from trafficked girls, discussed medicating Melinda
Why? He obviously had ties to a LOT of wealthy and influential people - a lot of them in tech. There are often non tech things here. Like when some prince of Wales or something died. It had like 200 comments. Which I personally didn't understand because surely that is not tech related.

Anyway. How tech, wealth and politics are intertwined matters.

bergheim··on Prism
Sure. Like Goebbels. Because they gobble things up.

Altso, nazism. But different context, years ago, so whatever I guess?

Hell, let's just call it Hitler. Different context!

Given what they do it is an insidious name. Words matter.

bergheim··on Qwen3-Max-Thinking
This is the most naive self centered comment so far this year.

Congrats!

bergheim··on The unbearable joy of sitting alone in a café
Such a weird take. I should deadlift 400 pounds in my apartment? And where do I put the barbell and weights when I am done destroying my floor and freaking my neighbors out?

(and don't say just do an alternative; there is none at those weights and I enjoy it)

bergheim··on Can I start using Wayland in 2026?
I agree with the parent comment. I have sway on my laptop, i3 on my desktop, I don't notice any difference. Well except sharing and annoying small sway things that works on i3.

Just as I am oblivious to whether this is posted over ipv4 or 6.

That they all have to implement the protocol seems like 20 years of wayland might actually have hurt Linux more than it fixed - without it something else would have happened. Think of how many man hours have been wasted doing the same thing for KDE, gnome, sway, hyprland, etc.

(also I agree about the publicly available thing, it's a bug for me as well. Companies will harvest everything they can and you better believe defaults matter - aka publicly available, for the producer, but they will say your security, of course)

bergheim··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
Which is, of course, not how people primarily communicate on WhatsApp (or any communication based app). People don't send streams of videos to each other in group chats. They write text and add gif memes.
bergheim··on IDEmacs: A Visual Studio Code clone for Emacs
Well, I guess? Using TRAMP with large projects is not a pleasant experience. It works great for one-off files and remote bookmarks etc, but for working with large projects you're better off mosh/ssh-ing into the server and using Emacs there. With things like term-keys [1] you can use all the keys there as well. Basically only missing out on images and variable fonts, both of which are none issues for me at least when programming.

bergheim··on Sora 2
I had a friend over for my last birthday before going to a venue. He had a huge framed painting he had made. It made me cry.

A prompt delivered by Amazon drones would obviously not be the same lovely moment.

So yes, I agree.

bergheim··on Sora 2
We are just heading for Lovely All TM.

I kid.

Art should require effort. And by that I mean effort on the part of the artist. Not environmental damage. I am SO tired of non tech friends SWOONING me with some song they made in 0.3 seconds. I tell them, sarcastically, that I am indeed very impressed with their endeavors.

I know many people will disagree with me here, but I would be heart broken if it turned out someone like Nick Cave was AI generated.

And of course this goes into a philosophical debate. What does it matter if it was generated by AI?

And that's where we are heading. But for me I feel effort is required, where we are going means close to 0 effort required. Someone here said that just raises the bar for good movies. I say that mostly means we will get 1 billion movies. Most are "free" to produce and displaces the 0.0001% human made/good stuff. I dunno. Whoever had the PR machine on point got the blockbuster. Not weird, since the studio tried 300 000 000 of them at the same time.

Who the fuck wants that?

I feel like that ship in Wall-E. Let's invest in slurpies.

Anyway; AI is here and all of that, we are all embracing it. Will be interesting to see how all this ends once the fallout lands.

Sorry for a comment that feels all over the place; on the tram :)
