benmcnelly··on Shame on Y Combinator
I heard the NRA is a a racist, sexist bigot with rapidly mounting allegations of multiple sexual assaults! I don't know who this ceterun_censeo guy is, however, I reckon he obviously is supporting people who support Trump. Light the pitchforks! Shame him on twitbook!*

* I feel like I have to explicitly mark this post as sarcasm for fear of peoples stupidity. I listed some other things (like find out where he works) and it just made me sick, I couldn't do it, even in sarcasm and jest. I hope after the dust settles people remember how to be decent again.

benmcnelly··on Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey secretly funded pro-Trump meme website
I really expected a measured and intellectual response to trump, almost as a learning experience for people that are tempted to follow him, like hey here is some non-judgmental education for you, check out what we can learn from this, etc.
benmcnelly··on Why Most Apple critique articles are garbage
I feel like I could write a nice article on why most critique's of Apple critique articles, are also garbage.

I will refrain and just offer a well rounded and fair opinion of Apple.

Apple is obviously still making well built products with slick software, but they have not created anything recently more compelling than just being an upgrade or polish to what they already have. The watches, while very nice, did not bring anything new to the table that android watches hadn't. Their phones, while having to compete with gobs of hardware running android, have certainly not changed that much, but they have incrementally gotten better.

iOS has not distanced itself from stock android, and on top of the line hardware like the Nexus 6P, the only factor people have to consider now is what ecosystem they want to live in. Either way they get a buttery smooth OS with everything they could want and all the apps they need.

From a geek perspective, I am chomping at the bit for them to shock the world with the next big thing, like they did with iPods and iPhones. I would love for them to make another laptop I can't live without, that nobody else can touch.

To make use of an analogy, if apple is car maker, its top of the line supercar is still a formidable foe on the drag strip and the track, and while other supercars may outpace it one area or the other, and Apple has the edge in other aspects, its still an amazing all around supercar. It's just not showing any signs of pulling away from the pack any time soon, and for that matter, for the money there are other good options out there that may be more your style.

benmcnelly··on Oct. 4
OKAY, so I get that they are promoting (probably) the camera/photos but with the photos filling the whole device, it almost makes you wonder if they are doing full color custom high DPI printed back covers (which would be good, since its so ugly if leaked pics are correct).

Or maybe they are going to be the first with a full slab of glass on the front with seamless edge to edge display (hah yeah right) - if its not either of those things, they just set people up for massive disappointment.

benmcnelly··on Pardon Snowden
I don't know what long risk mitigation is, but I'm offended. /s

But seriously, nobody at the NSA is going to place* you on a watch list because you are part of a small vocal minority that raised support online for Snowden, a wanted traitor and saboteur of the USA.

*There is however a good chance that the money grubbing bastards at one of the third party contractors the NSA eats up reports and analytics from will profile you into something you are not (or lets face it, you are) and that will be ingested into our intelligence pipeline.

benmcnelly··on What is BleachBit? Little-known tool at center of Clinton email controversy
What is this FUD? I saw something on here the other day from BleachBit itself wanting to cash in on its 5 minutes of fabricated fame. I know Clinton was running Windows Exchange Server, and they may have had outlook set up, and maybe even used PST files, but BleachBit and CCleaner and the like don't let you manage or purge outlook files, or do anything beyond a glorified browser history cleaner. Anyone in IT who uses these tools probably also charges to stop by and run a defrag your windows XP box.

Under their features page and in their news/blog area, Bleachbit revels in any press they get, I guess wanting more people to use them to protect their privacy or something? Not sure if they are enjoying the limelight, wanting more donations, or NSA spyware, but this is a program that nobody needs or asked for. I smell something funky.

benmcnelly··on Got sick and tired of prebuilt laptops so I built my own modular laptop system
Alright, now down to the ditty-gritty. I realize that you are in a development stage, but I don't see anyone being interested in this unless you build at least one, and have a slick video of it. Don't take me wrong, I am not wanting to rail on the website or the presentation of the idea in such infancy, just stating to gain traction you will have to appear less fly by night.

My main issue here is that a lot of people have wanted to do this, and either failed or given up because of the large amount of problems to solve with a modular laptop/phone/anything of that nature. So either you are naive to how hard this actual is to do because you don't understand it at a high level, or you have solved some very hard and interesting problems, and not taken the time to share how you are doing it or at what level of competency you are at. Either way, the proof is in the pudding, and I wish you the best.

benmcnelly··on Got sick and tired of prebuilt laptops so I built my own modular laptop system
I already ordered 15 of those, I hope they arrive soon.
benmcnelly··on Got sick and tired of prebuilt laptops so I built my own modular laptop system
Sweet. Comments and questions.

1. I don't see much information about manufacturing specifics, as people care about everything from the switches in keyboards to how much battery life you get out of each battery, you need loads more details on the site. Do you have any plans of more photos, marketing material, specifics etc?

2. Do you have plans on open sourcing your designs so people can make their own modular ad on things?

3. The configuration wizard is slick, and the options are obviously tailored towards high end, are you thinking the only market for modular custom will be high end, or do you plan on expanding it?

benmcnelly··on Edward Snowden: It’s Only Getting Better (HITRECORD X ACLU) [video]
That was surprisingly uplifting, I guess I have associated Snowden to doom and gloom as most things I read with his name attached make me feel worse about things in general, mostly in regards to the truth hurting.
benmcnelly··on You Won’t Believe What Facebook Is Giving Away for Free Now
I don't like the way wired treats people with adblock enabled, so no traffic from me. Its hard to respect a click-bait title like that anyway. Downvote away, I know its not a helpful comment about whatever the article is about, I just wanted to share that I finding no compelling reason to care about anything wired has to say.

benmcnelly··on Snowden: Hack of an NSA server is not unprecedented, publication of the take is
Honestly, I think its a bit far fetched the US would meddle in the foreign affairs of an ally. We have a long documented history of staying out of civil wars, guerrilla warfare, and aiding the "right" people to come to leadership as it suits us.
benmcnelly··on Snowden: Hack of an NSA server is not unprecedented, publication of the take is
Exactly what I thought about this "hack"
benmcnelly··on Snowden: Hack of an NSA server is not unprecedented, publication of the take is
Pretty much right, you don't need a religion or code of conduct to tell you not to be a dick. With the NSA, and many other agencies and organizations, a culture of ends justifying means is highly contagious. Human nature and our reasons for being decent moral persons and speaking the truth instead of a lie, always has some threshold defined by our world view and beliefs. When you deal with scumbags all day, those pesky rules and rights are just in the way of justice some times.
benmcnelly··on Battlefield 1 Open Access Beta 31st of August
As much flack as they have gotten and deserved for BF4 and the launch/netcode issues, they have resolved a lot of the technical problems with having such a large multiplayer FPS. Of course it will look and sound amazing, I am mostly interested to see what new things they bring to the series.

benmcnelly··on Project Trillek, a game inspired by Notch's 0x10c
I count myself among the many people that were disappointed that the game got shelved, but I had hoped someone would take up the mantle and make something in its same vein. Looking forward to following it, playing it and maybe contributing to it!
benmcnelly··on How to Compromise the Enterprise Endpoint
Exactly, I don't get this argument at all. I think the way Google handled the Symantec issue was just fine, but we don't need to live in a world where CA's need precrime units to clear someone for a cert. I do Nazi issuing Hitler a cert as a problem, anne frankly I don't think anyone should care.
benmcnelly··on How to Compromise the Enterprise Endpoint
Just wanted to add on that the down-votes probably come from people that take your comment as perpetuation of the argument that macs don't need AV, vs taking it at face value that its been your experience (and mine) with the OS.

On the flip side, I have 4 infected mac's being flagged by webroot right now because the users downloaded and ran things like fake flash installers. So "every day" users do dumb things on macs and windows. For those user, the AV performance hit is worth it (to me) :)

benmcnelly··on E-ink wifi display project
Nobody does, because there is no open source "visionect", but there really should be. They have put in the work to make a simple stack (dev kit) for working with the tech, but you can't just borrow that stack and source cheap panels. I would say the market is wide open for someone to do what they are doing, but crowd fund it, open source the controllers, hardware, software etc
