benmcnelly··on Fewer than 3% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual transmissions
I have a manual 2015 Subaru WRX, and I can get way better MPG number than listed, if I want to. I don't, but I can.
benmcnelly··on Fewer than 3% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual transmissions
I have never been to Puerto Rico, but in Nicaragua and Honduras is highly advantageous for your health and safety to flow with the rest of traffic. He is completely right, this comes in handy because so many roads (especially in mountain areas) are very inconsistent and messy.
benmcnelly··on According to Snopes, Fake News Is Not the Problem
The problem here, is people are willing to brush aside facts that are most easily left to interpretation based on world view, for the larger sake of their cause, where the ends justify the means.

As a very middle of the road moderate (if that's the right word? Maybe it's something else.) type, I clearly see this disregard on both the liberal and conservative side. Much in the same way an agnostic has to sit and watch mommy atheist and daddy religion fight.

Examples:

1. Trump is a racist

Liberal >> Common sense and all evidence point towards him having and continuing to have racist and bigoted behavior. Electing him would empower racists and harm the country.

Conservative >> Common sense and all evidence point towards the biased media fixating on his conservative views of upholding the law (ILLEGAL immigration) and trying to paint him and anyone else with those views as racist. Also, he is a flamboyant TV personality, I am more than willing to overlook his gaffs because at least he says what he thinks. Electing him would help reverse the damage caused over the last 8 years.

Something Else >> Trump is a jerk and probably has lots of personal issues, and may indeed be a racist. While I am sure there is a small minority of people that like his ideas based on a place of hate, it seems there are a lot of people that have an ideological reason to support him based on the changes they want to see made. Electing him seems like a risky move, and may destabilize things.

2. Obama is a Muslim

Liberal >> Obama's officially stated religion is Christianity. Yes, he is friendly towards Muslims, why wouldn't he be. We have a long way to go towards repairing our relationships and reputation at home and abroad as being inclusive and tolerant of ALL lifestyles, beliefs, and religions.

Conservative >> Obama's actions in office show a disregard of his duties to protect Americans at home and abroad from the threat that is radical Islam.

Something Else >> Obama is a classy guy, and he is not afraid to mix it up with people no matter what people think. Not sure about things like the Iran deal are the smartest but I very sure he (and some other decently smart people) have our best interest in mind, however, I am not sure if they are making the best decisions. I am unsure that any amount of publicly available facts about national defence, economy, Middle East past and present tensions and issues, and Iran, will make me better able to judge this.

Conclusion:

Just because you have facts, doesn't mean you have an understanding. Wisdom and knowledge are for sure bolstered by each other, but not synonymous. It seems to me both sides have a righteous indignation against the other. It will take compassion and compromise to truly move forward as one human race.

benmcnelly··on VR Sales Analysis: Rift and Vive to Sell Under 500K in 2016, PS VR to Top 2M
Any VR sales are good for all of VR. We are still solving problems with making VR comfortable for people and locomotion etc. What encourages me about it, is some of best and brightest are working on the problems. Sure we have a lot of Demos right now and no killer app that will make it take off, but all it takes is something like Valve releasing an updated Vive bundled with Half-Life 3, and the PC market will catch up in a hurry.
benmcnelly··on The unbearable smugness of the press
I think it is funny/sad that almost every comment online or in person, I find myself feeling I need to add "and I don't like Trump" or equivalent qualifiers, for fear of negative bias in interpretation of any statement I make.]

What happened to where being able to state your opinion or make a logical argument has to to be qualified so you don't get assumed to be racist, or sexist or whatever. I am going to try and unlearn that behavior and assume the best about people until proven otherwise.

benmcnelly··on The unbearable smugness of the press
I upvoted you, since I think it's a fair question :)

I may be miss reading it, but it is probably not meant to be condescending - They are noticing someone's behavior and use a commonly understood proverbial phrase or idiom to describe it. In this case "gang of condescending children" might have been better stated as "childish attitude and groupthink" as it is meant to portray them as behaving with mentality of elitism that feeds off other people around them who echo and embolden their thoughts, making it very easy for them to dismiss others and their views unilaterally instead of reasoned and compassionate objective reasoning.

This statement might also be used like this - "So when Billy and his friends came back to town from their freshman semester and humanities 101, they were all too eager, like a gang of condescending children, to argue with Billy's WW2 veteran grandpa about how wrong he was about how the world worked and how much more they knew about it."

benmcnelly··on Hillary Clinton wins VR experience
This is exactly the kind of partisan talk that leads to infighting, like Oculus vs Vive... Every Republican knows the Vive is better.

Gah! I can't get a conversation to stay connected. So many cool people I would love to keep talking to. Is there an alternative that is not getting HN hugged?
benmcnelly··on Google's mini radar can identify virtually any object
As augmented reality takes of, and machine learning databases gather tons of data with the help of mini radar and devices like project tango, computer sensing is really going to far surpass human bounds faster than we realize or have plans for.

I am excited and terrified. I want my little robots I build to be able to sense and navigate and autonomously live around me, but I don't want little NSA roaches all over my house. Like most things we will have to take the good with the bad I guess.

benmcnelly··on Live Coding
1. VERY clever

2. I could watch this all day

benmcnelly··on Adobe demos “photoshop for audio,” lets you edit speech as easily as text
Quick Facts: > Needs a decent set of audio data to work with, 30 minutes of audio book will do > They are working on watermarking the waveform some how try and hamper it being used to impersonate people in a illegal way.

Obviously bringing this tech to the masses is an interesting development. In a post Donald Trump world, anything we can do to get people to use critical thinking is great, perhaps eventually we will all develop a photoshop radar for audio too. Its still pretty crazy to me what we will be able to produce with audio and visual manipulations on the fly, as well as advanced AI.

benmcnelly··on Plasma Mobile – Turns your phone into a fully open hacking device
You are not alone, I have two good friends that still have theirs too, and nothing will ever be good enough for them again. That phone spoiled them, and is the direction they wish phones went. Alas, they have gone the way of the masses instead, but you know if someone like a OnePlus came out with a modern powered phone, with a big battery (phone size doesn't matter to us), a physical keyboard, dual sim, expandable memory and an open source OS, there would be DOZENS of us that would snap it up. Dozens!
benmcnelly··on Plasma Mobile – Turns your phone into a fully open hacking device
Yes, this is the pain point of things like this. It really will (most likely) take someone branching it off into a paid product to advance it faster (or) a very large amount of people getting involved. Traditionally these things grow slowly, but I am impressed at what they have so far.
benmcnelly··on Plasma Mobile – Turns your phone into a fully open hacking device
I hope that you are right and this turns into that, but its also an opportunity for someone to branch it off into a commercial product. Some people don't want a pocket computer, they want a groomed and simple to use OS with user experience in mind, that "just works".
benmcnelly··on Plasma Mobile – Turns your phone into a fully open hacking device
The power of things like this taking off is not what they are now, but what they can be. There are lots of real people with their own good reasons to not be tied to Google/Apple, and whats really impressive here is that unlike firefox OS, they are (in my opinion) doing this in a much better way.

As this catches on, it only helps improve linux hardware (ARM) support, telephony applications for linux, and the like. As well as being able to have (or make for others) a truly remarkable user interface and apps. This is a mobile computer, running linux, running a desktop environment (not webkit, or Java VM, or closed source code) that only limits what you can make by your skill and imagination.

Yes it looks pretty mediocre now, but that's because its waiting on you to get involved.

benmcnelly··on Plasma Mobile – Turns your phone into a fully open hacking device
I think I will remix it with the Google Pixel ad music and style and see if it helps. like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBM5W12JYmQ
benmcnelly··on Switching from macOS: The Basics
I agree, been using mint linux (Debian based, borrows some "just works" stuff from Ubuntu) plus the Cinnamon Desktop, is a dream, on high end hardware or not. I will concede though, most people coming from iOS/Mac will want something tailored and curated for them, even though *nix offers unlimited possibilities in customization and software.

benmcnelly··on Shadow brokers dump more NSA data
They can't really get in and scrub these, because people are watching them now, so upside, some poor sap isn't having to go in and do a ton of cleanup work, downside is there are a lot of potential honeypots now.

benmcnelly··on Ask HN: What is the best Hackintosh laptop for ios app developers?
Please, please don't kill me - I know there are people who love the Mac Ecosystem (I have a macbook too!) and don't like linux, but I switched to Mint Linux with Cinnamon Desktop, and its pretty darn great. For people who live in containers, virtualenv, node, and many other types of dev, you will feel at home in no time. I bet there is a slider of where the things you like about mac go from unix like environment to "it just works" and if you are even a bit on the "it just works" side, don't go with linux, it will be an adventure. A worthy adventure, but maybe not profitable for everyone.
