benmcnelly··on Google featured snippets are worse than fake news
You are right, and I was agreeing with it.

One downside to being sarcastic on a comment thread to make a point is I can't tell if people are down-voting me because they clicked the link, or because they didn't.

benmcnelly··on Google featured snippets are worse than fake news
Oh look another "the moon landing was real" guy.

^ See what I did there? I made a comment on the Internet, and called into question the legitimacy of your comments.

Anyone can do it! So what we really need is HN to moderate our comments to filter out comments like yours so that we can just read the truth without having to filter out the garbage. I don't want to hear about how you think the the earth is round just because I'm on a NASA thread. One thing for sure is this is HN's fault.

benmcnelly··on Google featured snippets are worse than fake news
Are you kidding me?! We need to get this law changed ASAP.

Look at this search result. This fake news stuff cannot be allowed to continue.

benmcnelly··on Google featured snippets are worse than fake news
Thats a stretch and you know it. Your comment shares some blame in spreading false knowledge yet you don't see me clamoring for HN to moderate their comments for truthfulness.

And no its not different, maybe I am not Internet savvy and believe the top rated comment on HN as the most informed opinion and take it as fact instead of researching something for myself.

To be clear, just because Google has some helpful widgets and search helpers built in does not mean it asserts its search results as facts or even the best result. Google is trying to get you the best answers it can, and makes no claim otherwise.

edit: I stand corrected, I had no idea about the Google TOS here that admits they are committed to only returning search results that are factual, and to that end factual to you specifically: https://google.com/things-that-are-not-there/

benmcnelly··on Google featured snippets are worse than fake news
And that is the real issue. I am as to blame as anyone. Whenever a friend or family member needs a computer fixed, or computing thing explained, I have been there to do it for them. We live in a more connected world, full of non-savvy users.
benmcnelly··on Google featured snippets are worse than fake news
Google is a search engine for finding webpages, not facts. Thats where this "fake" news story should end. This is not a political problem, its a societal one, and you are barking up the wrong tree.

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, created and edited by volunteers around the world. It is not authoritative, and anyone who treats it as such, should be educated to the facts of what it is, and is not. Just because its moderated to be supported by links to facts, doesn't mean that every bit of content is free of bias and the whole truth. Its generally accepted that this is the case. Same thing goes for Snopes, and some other fact checking sites. They are generally looked to for a reasonable amount of truthfulness based on reputation. Same could be said for various media outlets, based on your preference and bias.

Social media sites and search engines are not responsible to tailor their content to fit your expectations of what truth or reality are. Stop being a child.

"but, people expect to be able to Google something and results and snippets be the truth!"

Well, thats a problem for sure.

How about we try and fix that expectation instead? Feel free to teach your children and anyone you know who uses the internet, that (surprisingly) anyone from anywhere can still get online and post anything at any time, and you should fact check multiple places and resources instead of trusting the first result from your favorite search engine.

"but by offering snippets of results from programmatically generated search results (which is super handy 99% of the time) Google is publishing false truths!"

Right, and you can probably still Google bomb the image search to show an image you want based on a certain search term, its the internet not your personal fact butler, no matter how its advertised. Its 2017 and common sense and intelligence are still recommended for most tasks.

benmcnelly··on AMD Ryzen brings 8 cores from just $329
Sigh... I really hope that a couple months after people get their hands on these that they are really more bang for less buck, but last time AMD made these claims it was all about specific multi-core stuff and they were not the better all around processor.

Something needs to push Intel forward, because there have been more incremental ticks then leaps forward lately.

benmcnelly··on Reasonable Person Principle
I can't tell if you are commenting on him being part of a clueless American culture, in general, or that his quandary is because the aforementioned culture problem.
benmcnelly··on My experience with Unity VR editor
Huh, my experience with the Vive and a good rig (i7, 32gb ram, gtx1080, etc) has been fluid and easy to use. More useful for tweaking props in my levels than "creating" things, but there are serious opportunities (and some good starts) to sane VR user interfaces. Even if they can just nail using twirl gizmos for fine tuning integer inputs would ripple out and be useful in the 3DS Max / After Effects / video editor / whatever VR software of the future.
benmcnelly··on Fake News Challenge
I am concerned that we may have an AI breakthrough with this project, but no matter how hard we try, not be able to remove its conservative bias.
benmcnelly··on Here’s your chance to help build Trump’s Mexican wall in virtual reality
Oh man, these Onion writers are really getting creative. Whats that, this is real life?! Oh.
benmcnelly··on Ask HN: Unreal Engine or Unity for Long-Term VR Project?
For me, I like the professional pipeline and stunning visuals of Unreal, but would not recommend it to anyone not doing this full time with a team. Unity I think is more accessible and can easily be made to look great as well, and is well suited for small teams or single developers.

Specifically relating to VR, I have worked and made full projects in both, and I prefer Unity and would highly recommend it over Unreal for VR, but you should try both and see what feels more intuitive for you.

benmcnelly··on VR
The best I have found so far* is a PVC 5 way side outlet with some short legs for stability and a tall sections based on how high you want to go. I wanted added stability to I made two per lighthouse, and a cross beam on top. Using some old go-pro accessories to attach. *You are right, you want it to be super stable, moving it while its plugged in can seriously damage it.
benmcnelly··on VR
Yes, demoing things are using it every day are two different things. One issue for this tech is, you can show someone, they have to experience it - and for some things you need to actively use it to get your VR legs and really start being able to appreciate it.

The best analogy I have heard is that VR is experienced in layers, and the time it takes to settle into deeper and deeper levels is different for everyone.

benmcnelly··on Lasers activate killer instinct in mice
They know they are playing with fire here. You want zombie mice? because this is how you get zombie mice.

"This left him fairly certain that the experiments were triggering predation, not hunger or aggression."

benmcnelly··on Obama Expands Surveillance Powers on His Way Out
This is a bad time to be a liberal. Let me explain.

On nearly the eve of handing over the country to Trump, Obama is laying the groundwork for policy that has huge potential to be abused. I am confused, because if anything you would think he would do the opposite, but I refuse to believe it was done to give him a noose to hang himself, but why?

Why is it a bad time to be a liberal? Because there is a good chance you will disagree with a lot of upcoming policy. But with this in place, criticizing your government or standing against tyranny could make you a target, one that is now easier than ever to trudge through an archive of your online life for anything remotely wrong, and prosecute you, retroactively, for it.

benmcnelly··on Freenom World – A fast and anonymous Public DNS resolver
Nice try NSA
benmcnelly··on Want to Build a Side Business? Just Buy Great Domain Name
This is rubbish.

I am (was) a serial domain buyer. Now, I guess its somewhat true that buying a domain to go with your idea can really inspire you, I have a lot of domains I let expire or still hold on to because I haven't yet or never did anything with them. I don't think its a good idea.

benmcnelly··on Compute Card, a Credit Card-Sized Compute Platform
I have personally made two prototypes for people using the Edison plus a the amazing add-ons from sparkfun. The integrated wifi and bluetooth are great, and once you are done setting it up, you end up with a battery stacked on an Edison, so a full blown computer with wifi and bluetooth you can switch on and stick anywhere you can fit two thumbs.
benmcnelly··on Ask HN: What is the status of VR on Linux?
I was going to say, I am 30 and have been an avid FPS PC master race gamer since I was 16 and in college, and since I have had the HTC Vive, its been only to play with friends I miss that I do any traditional gaming. Other than that, I am either working on my VR game, or playing/testing something in VR.

This is going to change everything from music production and video editing, to gaming and entertainment.

benmcnelly··on Why numbering should start at zero (1982)
Yes. In fact, the way he used hyphenation at the end of a line made me go back and look at each letter to make sure it wasn't a font. They are very consistent, but not exact clones. Makes me wonder if there are ways to make fonts that use multiple versions of a letter to make them appear to be more hand written. I bet you could program one of these to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce35RAMMQug
benmcnelly··on Is It True That Some People Just Can’t Do Math? [pdf]
tl;dr: The facts behind the popular myth that some people can't do math, just don't add up.
benmcnelly··on Make VR Games in VR inside Unity
This is going to be a fun road to go down. I am sure it will be rough around the edges at first but as it matures I have good faith that Unity will knock it out of the park. Can't wait to fire of the Vive and check it out!
benmcnelly··on Show HN: Ffftp – A Minimal FTP Client Built on Electron
I tried doing this exact same thing and it wasn't as quick/easy as I hoped so I bailed, so first off, thank you for making it, and second, don't worry that its messy at least you got it started and that is the hard part.
benmcnelly··on Milking the iPhone

benmcnelly··on Amazon Go
Also, since the app is still on your phone there is no reason they can't be using it to gather data as well.
benmcnelly··on Graphics Deep Dive: Cascaded Voxel Cone Tracing in the Tomorrow Children
voxel cone tracing is not a new thing, but the way they are doing it is pretty neat and seems to be giving them good FPS even on console hardware (it's usually pretty beefy to do).

As far as other engines doing GI, Unity uses enlighten wich cheats (brilliantly) by precomputing the scene (not baking) which lets it dynamically do GI in a scene.

benmcnelly··on In 63 days Trump will inherit mass surveillance from Obama
Why would Obama pardon Snowden, it is obvious he is in agreement on the whole "he is a traitor" thing. Also, why is Trump inheriting thing a motivating factor for anyone?

"Oh God! Please give us back the situation where government overreach is back in the hands of career politicians!"

How about you instead focus on petitioning to the new President who might actually be swayed into doing something about it if conservative and liberals come together and push for it. He's a populist, make it the cool thing to do...
