benmathes··on Diversity and Startups
Broadly speaking, competition definitely creates sex-based selection-bias. Men self-select into competitions more than women, and are more motivated by them.

I am not saying men are more capable, just more likely to self-select into the competition. Read up on what professional coaches of womens vs mens teams say.

benmathes··on Hackathon Accidentally Picks Perfect Metaphor for Its Own Awfulness
"Meritocracy" is often the idealized thing we like to call the American economy, but it is far from that.

benmathes··on Employee Equity
Finance allows diversification in ways that operating (programming, marketing, etc.) doesn't. One usually needs to either (a) make money operating or (b) gain experience marking to either (a) invest your own money or (b) invest the money of others.

(at least in private markets)

benmathes··on AngelList’s Newest Experiment: a $25M Fund to Invest in Angel Investors
AngelList's office was/is on Maiden Lane in San Francisco.
benmathes··on Stripe Checkout
And you can use it for just 5% of any profits made on it.

but seriously, have at it. Guaranteed there's prior art.

benmathes··on Stripe Checkout
You could also automatically run split tests on a per-merchant basis, thereby automatically auto-tune the checkout for each merchant.
benmathes··on Obama’s Changes to Government Surveillance
No reason to trust, no way to verify.
benmathes··on “Vacations are for the weak”
Money is an indirect representation of impact. It's not perfect, but positive impact can be rewarded financially.
benmathes··on “Vacations are for the weak”
I love your energy and appetite for life. I might suggest looking into the Myth of Multitasking: https://www.google.com/search?q=the+myth+of+multitasking
benmathes··on Show HN: I mapped US medical prices. Save thousands by driving a few miles
Incredibly useful if you're on medicare (what the price data is based on).

For the majority of us _not_ on medicare, castlighthealth.com is solving this. It's B2B for now, i.e. Tesla pays for castlight and then its employees can use castlight to find out how much things will cost.

benmathes··on Life of solitude: A loneliness crisis is looming
I hope all the upvotes you're receiving is evidence that we _do_ care.

Perhaps get into some multiplayer online games? They really helped me when I was feeling lonely -- especially if you start to play with a regular crowd and start to use voicecomm. It's fun, social, but not too social.

benmathes··on Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL
Oh sweet, now I can actually put this up for less than $ArmAndALeg https://github.com/benmathes/earthquakes
benmathes··on Qatar: Abolish Exit Visas for Migrant Workers
Which is almost more arrogant, since it translates to "The country in the center". It's a little easier to understand why there's a strain of "we are the center of the world, outside our borders are barbarians" when you look at pre-modern borders: China is bordered by oceans, the russian steppes, the xinjian desert, and the tibetan plateau.
benmathes··on ClojureScript 101
Couldn't really get started (with the latest clean install of leiningen from homebrew).

  $ lein cljsbuild auto async-tutl
  ...
  java.lang.Exception: Unknown build identifier: async-tutl
Did the name of the tutorial change?

edit: ell instead of 1. I guess that's why I use a heavily-serifed font for my coding. I even re-read the command several times looking for a simple typo to catch exactly this problem.

benmathes··on 2013 Developer Salary Survey
80k as a US Average translates to about 120k in San Francisco, adjusted for cost of living. According to the startup jobs on angellist, SF is paying average salaries (adjusted for cost of living): https://angel.co/salaries

PS: Where are these 200k salaries? I have 7 years of experience and would happily switch for <redacted> more money each year.

benmathes··on The short, tormented life of computer genius Phil Katz (2000)
That's brutal, and hard to read, especially when I've experience shreds of that loneliness, that unreasonable fear that you have nowhere and no one to go to.

Each morning I read a note to myself: "The high score isn't money, it's people who love you".

benmathes··on My First 9 Months as an Angel Investor
Reading legal docs does suck for angels. We launched a product on AngelList that completely standardized the seed-round docs (debt or equity), the early adopters liked it, but we didn't get traction and it was an awful lot of legwork to maintain.

good initial press, but it didn't work out ( there's an entire blog post I could write about why)

benmathes··on Stealing Traction: How Youtube, Paypal, AirBnB grew through piggybacking
I worked at RockYou.com in its heyday, which was when we had the #1 app on facebook, Superwall.

Superwall used exactly one of the strategies outlined in this article: Fix one of the pain points on a platform. The platform was Facebook, the pain point was sharing images and videos with your friends.

Facebook decided that sharing images and videos with your friends was a good idea, perhaps because they saw our success with it.

Superwall died. Rockyou pivoted into something totally different. A couple down-rounds of funding (I think).

"Take on the pain points of a platform" is usually referred to as "Don't try to beat the platform at being the platform".

benmathes··on Show HN: See How You Connect, right in GMail.
This was a hack week project of mine sometime last year. I still get good use out of it, thought some of you might as well.
benmathes··on By endurance we conquer
Like all maxims, "by endurance we conquer" is meant only to remind you of some potential solutions. Knowing when to quit and when to stick with it is the hard part.
benmathes··on Pandora CEO stepping down
I know this isn't the right venue, I don't know how else to get in touch with you, Carter.

I still have your camera that you lent me when I let you keep my backup squash racket. I didn't know you had moved to NYC without returning it to you, and I still feel pretty bad about it.

I'm sorry, but the little guy just up and stopped working. He had a good life. Can I return the favor?

benmathes··on Dope New Embeds
I like the embeds, but "dope" seems like terminology from a different domain.
benmathes··on Raising Transcriptic's Seed Round
I liked your writing style -- anecdotal with the moral at the end of each section.
benmathes··on AngelList New Feature: Invest Online
It's only open to accredited investors. This is for legal reasons, I think.

benmathes··on Transcriptic - outsourcing basic biology research work
frisco: “This is not a local, social, mobile photosharing app. It’s really frustrating to see someone get a PhD in chemistry and decide what the world really needs is a better way to share photos in real time to music.”

Clearly a lot of investors thought the same.

benmathes··on Yes, Developers and Investors Are Really Different
I suspect developers also tend to be familiar with productivity software; Most everyone has used an issue tracker of some kind while writing software, so we think we can do better. You end up stuck in the workflow-software quagmire, though: everyone works slightly differently, so to support everyone you need to get so abstract that it's not useful.
benmathes··on The Hardware Renaissance
Software can be remade by reloading the page on your dev server. Hardware has to be rebuilt. You'd need to provide a tighter iteration loop on designs.

3D printing could do this, in theory.

There's a company trying to do this for life sciences: https://angel.co/transcriptic

benmathes··on Job creation: Where are the startups?
I can imagine a lens where the Occupy protesters are a warning shot, specifically the "we are the 99%" mantra.
