benkillin··on Editing binaries: easier than it sounds
That skill is actually very useful if you are researching/developing format string vulnerability exploits.

There was a presentation I saw where a guy was able to extract a private RSA key from memory of a novell login screen by using typing in machine code using alt key combos in the username or password text field, exploiting a format string vulnerability.

This is the video of that presentation for the interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv0adeL4x1U

benkillin··on The science of ice, melting, and chilling as it pertains to drinks
Yes, the same amount of ice will cause the same amount of dilution. What they were using as a comparison metric is how enjoyable the drink is during the typical time it takes to consume the beverage (I infer). Most of the time the beverage is consumed before the ice has fully melted in my experience. The level of dilution during the time period in which there is still solid ice is what was being compared.

According to this: http://www.solarpoweristhefuture.com/what-light-wave-do-sola...

"Solar cells are made out of N-type and P-type semiconductor material that use the visual light spectrum to generate electricity. Solar radiation with wavelengths of 380 nm to 750 nm (violet to red) strike the material with enough energy to knock electrons from their weak bonds and create an electric current. The unused wavelengths (ultraviolet & infrared) do not have enough energy to dislodge the electrons and are absorbed as heat."

So, I think this idea is pretty feasible if there is some sort of IR and UV filter that could reflect the IR and UV wavelengths at the heat collection tower and let the visible light into the PV cell to have multiple electricity generation sources. I would imagine doing that would more efficiently make use of all the light energy collected, rather than only the wavelengths that can transform the light energy into heat.

I don't know if something like that exists... I know there are UV and IR filters for cameras but I am not sure if by filter they reflect the IR and UV light and let only the visible spectrum through.

look at project byzantium - depends on a regular computer to use or a raspberry pi but the whole goal of the project is "plug and play" software that will allow you to at the push of a few buttons get an ad-hoc wifi mesh set up.

benkillin··on Mesh Networks
"The goal of Project Byzantium is to develop a communication system by which users can connect to each other and share information in the absence of convenient access to the Internet. This is done by setting up an ad-hoc wireless mesh network that offers services which replace popular websites often used for this purpose, such as Twitter and IRC." - from http://project-byzantium.org/about/

This looks interesting but unless I could set up my own infrastructure so I would have total control of where the video stream goes I would never use one, especially in light of recent events.
benkillin··on Show HN: I made my Raspberry Pi a secret phone homing server
Setting I2P up on the RPi then setting ssh up to listen on a I2P hidden service on the RPi would be better than the method shown. That way if the device is discovered it would be impossible to trace back the actual IP address of the person connecting to it and an adversary obtaining your ssh key wont be able to log into any of your servers.

Check out this presentation from DerbyCon about using a cheap NAS to do something similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxdm86r26Co Irongeek has a writeup about the same thing here: http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=security/svartkast-pogopl... and some instructions to do it specifically on an RPi: http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=security/raspberry-pi-i2p...

Just to get pedantic, positive reinforcement means you are adding something to the environment with the goal of affecting behavior. Negative reinforcement means something has been removed from the environment to affect behavior. Not the same thing as reward and punishment. A negatively worded message is still technically positive reinforcement.

I'm not sure if you can consider a sign reinforcement though, because it is usually presented before the desired or undesired behavior occurs....

why on earth would you want to do this? this seems insane

Don't get me wrong, the idea is non trivial and the writeup is great.
