I'm a regular Joe, but finance screens seem like pure wank to me. If you work a desk in NYC, maybe it's a different story, and even then probably not, but if you're some bum nobody from LA with a little bit of money to throw around, there's absolutely nothing these things, or 6 simultaneous screens and an RGB PC case are going to tell you that give you some sort of long-term edge.

Horoscopes for young impressionable men, along with Bitcoin and all sorts of crap, was the most articulate way I've heard it.

As if technical analysis was worth more insight than pissing straight up looking for rain. Sure, it's wet.

bellowsgulch··on How Compaction Works in Pi
We must create new stories for good so that evil has something to steal! We're running out of unironic irony!
bellowsgulch··on Ask HN: How much money do you spend monthly on subscriptions for AI models?
Previously $0 using local models, then $10/mo with GitHub Copilot, cancelled that when it became a bad deal, now $10/mo with OpenCode Go.

I haven't seen a better deal than OpenCode Go yet. You get more in token spend than with using providers directly due to some volume discounts they pool.

Public education is clearly nonexistent. Just incredible. Did these people just sit and do nothing for their entire grade school education? An elementary school child learns what imperialism, war, and human nature is.
bellowsgulch··on Show HN: AI Pulse a fake LED strip beside the macOS Dock that shows agent status
Thank you, kindly!
bellowsgulch··on GPT 5.6 Cyber
Ah right, you mean people’s banking data, medical records, and other sensitive information should be freely handled by offshored labor with no qualifications right, right.

Let’s take a look at the industry’s track record for data breaches.

Huh, would you look at that.

Also, please. Like most physicians are doing any serious thinking that can’t be informed by prescription that they regurgitate from established practice. Your run-of-the-mill physician isn’t doing independent study.

They’re reading labs and writing a script. Give me a break.

“Make me homeless, make me homeless! Please, please offshore me! I beg you!”

bellowsgulch··on Show HN: AI Pulse a fake LED strip beside the macOS Dock that shows agent status
Maybe consider adding a live screenshot. "Beside the macOS Dock" is vague. What happens when your dock is the entire length of your desktop?
bellowsgulch··on GPT 5.6 Cyber
Yeah, we should let H1Bs take everyone's jobs, not just software engineers! Great idea, Bob!
bellowsgulch··on GPT 5.6 Cyber
I don't want this, but I do get what you're saying. What I really want is software engineers in our industry to stop behaving like such idiot losers who are begging to be jobless and give everything away for free.

Doctors protect doctor's interests. Lawyers aren't idiots, they're professionals who run businesses with the express intent to make money.

Software engineers seem to be just bright enough to make money, and just stupid enough to say, no no, please I'd prefer to be homeless, please take my job and automate me, offshore me, and devalue my salary out of existence all at once.

bellowsgulch··on an ambiguity in C89 which will never be fixed
All the weird stuff I have read about C or C++ doing over the years could be summed up with “Well… don’t do that.”

Like almost without fail. I can’t even think of how you’d end up in a scenario like this because a compiler would complain before letting you use an undefined implicit declaration.

bellowsgulch··on DeepSeek costs OpenCode Go user $1.14/day; dual DGX breaks even in 24 years
Fellow readers, would anyone please mind sharing their current experiences? qwen3.6-35b-a3b for local inference, GitHub Copilot Chat was previously worth it, and no longer is, tried OpenRouter and still read through their rankings to see what the industry is actively using, wholesale migrated to OpenCode Zen/Go.

Does this mirror what other people have been experiencing in waves?

bellowsgulch··on Improving Heuristics for A* Pathfinding
I have an appreciation for people who keep going. Sometimes it doesn't really matter how long it takes you to learn something. I've found it's more valuable to see what you'd do with that knowledge.
bellowsgulch··on Triton: DirectX 11 Driver for QEMU
DirectX 12 isn't just much more like Vulkan, it's so shockingly similar, it's basically Vulkan. It's jarring when you read it for the first time because you ask yourself why it even exists, but a second later, you realize it's so Microsoft can own their own graphics interface, too.

I could be remembering this incorrectly, but that's the impression I remember.

bellowsgulch··on Improving Heuristics for A* Pathfinding
In the event this helps a random developer with some fun experimentation: I had once accidentally independently reinvented drunken pathfinding by adding random additional weights to the node costs, which has the side effect of making an object seeking a path end wander "drunkenly."
bellowsgulch··on Ask HN: Is Ask HN Shrinking?
Where else are people frequenting? The crowd here has changed, and I'm not what HN is now. Maybe I never was. I know a lot of people are saying much of social media has moved into private chats, Discord and such, but I'm just curious.
bellowsgulch··on Don't use your phone while you poop
Literally read this on the toilet. Thanks!
bellowsgulch··on Pareto Front
I don't think power law distributions are the same thing. However, actually, in different fields, power law distributions are descriptive enough you can use them as targets for abstract criteria.
bellowsgulch··on Faster Than Ninja
Better to have made imperfectly and learned than to not have made at all. :)
bellowsgulch··on Faster Than Ninja
Thank you for your work on Ninja. It's just really good.
bellowsgulch··on Show HN: Simple algorithm and color space to generate diverse skin tones
Skin is so interesting as a surface to think about how light passes through and bounces off of.

There is at least one article published by a technical artist at Pixar who describes modeling a skull within a human scan so that subsurface lighting is more accurately rendered.

I suspect you could combine this with dr_scully’s comment and GolDDranks’ to reach the nuance involved in long tail realism details.

bellowsgulch··on The U.S. lead over China in AI is all but gone
Seems like we could lead in AI development, and then immediately get trounced by economic factors. But yeah, autonomous cars, solar infrastructure, hell, general education.

The most frustrating one is Xi Jinping saying 房子是用来住的,不是用来炒的, or "Houses are for living, not for speculation."

How fucked is it that the CCP is leading the world in real estate policy.

bellowsgulch··on YC founder asks desperate job seekers to tattoo themselves for an interview
I think YC has an image problem. With its companies, and here, too.
bellowsgulch··on Tell HN: Amazonbot aggressively scraping my website and ignoring robots.txt
I haven't personally seen it, but I think us operators need to take entire registered ranges and hook 'em up to fail2ban. Maybe maintain lists of offenders and document it and block these orgs.

That is, I haven't personally seen a bad actors list that gets used in a fail2ban-like setup.

bellowsgulch··on qm – Multiplayer agent harness for work
People are building state-of-the-art harnesses in private right now that outperform the average developers' harnesses, people using Claude Code, OpenCode, etc.
bellowsgulch··on qm – Multiplayer agent harness for work
They all use the same pill glowy status light header eyebrow to immediately tell you they have no actual design skills and follow the herd.

Posers took over the industry.

bellowsgulch··on June in Servo: real world compat, media queries, SharedWorker, and more
I've repeatedly said this almost year after year, but Servo is not a "real" project. It's weird, but whatever the case is, after it left Mozilla, it has clearly oriented around being governance focused and not helping actual embedded browser engineers.

You don't have to believe me, just look at their track record and ask yourself why no one embeds it in anything after, what, a decade or more?

bellowsgulch··on Toot.community is shutting down
I think the small community stuff is useful, even on the scale of HN, which is only small when you think about the regulars posting, which people recognize.

Now that we have functional distributed social networks, I want a system that abolishes power mods. Whatever technical solution gets us there. Give us spam filters, but let people self-organize. I don't give two fucking shits that some Tom, Dick, or Harry doesn't like a Bob if I want to hear what Bob has to say.

bellowsgulch··on Toot.community is shutting down
I always feel like stuff like this is more or less intentional. Projects make their priorities known based on the priorities of their work.
bellowsgulch··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
Reminds me of telling employees to not discuss their wages. If voting here is such a toxic experience, maybe HN needs to wake up and smell the garbage.
