belinder··on Norway wants Facebook behavioral advertising banned across Europe
How do you prevent those alternative ways of discovering products from getting flooded by masqueraded ads?

I've never been to Norway, not sure how common something like that is but it looks incredible

belinder··on Why even let users set their own passwords?
If you want api keys to replace passwords then users need a built in mechanism on their device that stores it, since the majority of people are not going to be able to or want to copy some long obscure token and store it somewhere for later access. Some devices already have password managers and similar mechanisms built in, but it needs to be universally implemented and accepted before you could do something like this. Then there's still the question on do you share the api keys across devices?

Another way to look at it is, you may not be aware of all the settings out there, and a set like this will help you discover them
belinder··on How small is the smallest .NET Hello World binary?
It didn't start from 4 but 5. they skipped 4 because people would confuse it for .net framework

> I also learned it's incredibly difficult to sue a doctor for a misdiagnosis, even if they put you on a drug like methotrexate and took years of normalcy from your life

This seems so frustrating to me. A big factor in the high healthcare prices in the US is that doctors need to pay heavy premiums for their malpractice insurance. If they can't get sued anyway then why are we all paying them to pay for the insurance?

Does apple still take a 30% cut if there is a purchase made on the link outside app store, assuming it is still done on iOS?

belinder··on End-of-Life Dreams
Wonderful article, thank you for sharing. My favorite part:

> “Old couples,” Kerr writes, “have much to teach us about true love. Their bond requires no big declarations, loyalty tests, or dramatic endings.… They continue to feel and believe in it even when the person through whom that love originated leaves them. For elderly patients especially, their love for their other half is who they are. Jobs, ambitions, hobbies, mortgages, and plans have come and gone. What is left and what matters is the relationships they have maintained, cherished, and tended to through a lifetime of small gestures and greetings, loving glances and humorous words, shared stories and forgiven faults.”

belinder··on Vimium – A browser extension that provides Vim-style keyboard controls
Been using vimium for years. I have gotten so used to scrolling pages at different speed by pressing keys that whenever I am using someone else's computer I have to fight muscle memory. I also use it for clicking links through keybinds, but really the custom up/down is the main usage.

The occasional website having its own keybinds never stops being annoying, but it's easy to disable the extension per site

The deletion of wikipedia articles makes no sense to me and always feels to me like a random editor going on a power trip

I routinely try to look something up that I remember had a page 5 years ago but now redirects to some 'list of x' page where instead of having a full article about it, it is just a bullet point with no description. Why delete the article? Definitely not to make the site better...

long-term active accounts can get hacked. I absolutely agree with support staff needing to provide more information, but they can't just blanket whitelist any old account
belinder··on The world map that reboots your brain
I'm a big fan of maps and have seen a lot of different projections but this is my first time seeing authagraph. I think not only does it do a good job of showing relative size, it also looks good - but I'm used to looking at 'unconventional' projections. The only issue with it is that it's a bit hard to gauge what is 'up' and what is 'down'. If you were showing me this projection for Mars then I would probably get lost.

I'm having trouble finding a nice large resolution image. Anyone found one?

belinder··on Serving Netflix Video Traffic at 800Gb/s and Beyond [pdf]
It's a good point, and I think it's an interesting comparison. Obviously improving by a factor of 1000 is better than improving by a factor of 5. But the absolute improvement is still 4 times larger. 400'000'000 extra biscuits is going to bring a lot more revenue than 999'000 biscuits

belinder··on Canada declares plastics toxic, paving the way for restrictions
Right. My point is if we stop producing plastic we are still going to have a lot of plastic waste. Perhaps we could invest instead in actually making recycling work for the waste we already have
