begueradj··on There is a huge pool of exceptional junior engineers
By giving candidates problems you know they can't solve during the interview, you give yourself the right to dismiss anyone "you don't like" by telling them they failed the test.
begueradj··on How I, a non-developer, read the tutorial you, a developer, wrote for me
When someone makes a search and lands on your tutorial, you are not giving him unsolicited information.
begueradj··on The dawn of the post-literate society – and the end of civilisation
"the world has been replaced by graphics (more generally, images)"

Humankind started to record its history by images (google for instance about the city of Sefar, Algeria). Nowadays, even in tech we use graphics (diagrams and so on)

This is not my field but even the first letter of the latin alphabet is simply the image of the head of a cow rotated a bit to the left.

begueradj··on Rereading books
For me, the most important statement is:

>Rereading a book can give you an insight into how you’ve changed since you last read it.

Said in a different way, I noticed I understand from a different perspective some of the books I re-read.

begueradj··on Becoming the person who does the thing
True. But it's the same trend in every other field: new born babies lecture soon to die people about life.

Example of such lessons: recently, a well known dating coach who gives lessons that costs around 8000 euros per hour about how a man can become a high value man and attract high value women, called Sadia Khan, proved she is in the position to give lessons about how a woman can be of high value: private calls of her were released recently and it is shown she is a side chick of a married man.

begueradj··on Game theory at work: When to talk and when to shut up (2024)
>The quiet observer who speaks only when it truly matters

Never do that unless you're around the top of the hierarchy.

begueradj··on Do Things That Don't Scale (2013)
> "don't try to behave like companies much bigger than you"

That's a good point.

begueradj··on How Potatoes Evolved
There are more than 4000 varieties of potatoes available in shops around the world.
begueradj··on The fundamentals still matter
> Yet, I see people blindly trusting LLM outputs to develop SQL queries, without knowing how to explain or debug them.

The same is true about every other single instruction produced.

begueradj··on Rules by which a great empire may be reduced to a small one (1773)
He was a Freemason :)
begueradj··on About AI
I agree. For example, electric cars were around already in the mid 1800s. But some people believe Elon Musk is the original inventor.
begueradj··on In Praise of Quitting
"Life is, of course, just like this: You get only one shot, and it’s up to you to make the most of it by rejecting okay or even pretty good ways to allocate your time or other resources"

Simple counter example: a boxing champion gets the title once, but defends it for years. If he gets the title once and gives up, he will not be remembered because he left no legacy.

"I think quitting is one of my primary superpowers. Success in multiple fields is only possible if you’re willing to quit multiple fields"

Also I disagree. To stick with the boxer example: many boxers come back to fight after retirement, at an age where they can't fight and their body accumulated lots of damage. But why do they come back then ? Because after spending a good part of their life to reach that shot, they realize they don't have time to develop other skills to thrive in life, they can't have multiple successes. That's why they come back to do what it took them time to learn: fighting. It takes time to seriously succeed at anything, even when you are talented you need time and practice.

I disagree with most other statements.

begueradj··on Software Rot
Maybe we could say something a bit similar about Express.js and other "boring technologies".
begueradj··on AI is propping up the US economy
"History is a mathematical truth"

No, history is a web of lies written by the winners, just like your daily news.

begueradj··on Where to find ideas
It should turn grey. Unless you have grey matter deficit.
begueradj··on Where to find ideas
Some workplaces actually ask for new ideas in special must to attend meetings.

But an idea is worthless as long as it's not implemented. That's why you can find free online resources sharing, for example, "70 Small Business Ideas to Start in 2025"

begueradj··on Why Exercise Is a Miracle Drug
> Compared to virtually any other animal, we can vastly outperform them in the most arduous environments. Our bodies are mechanically optimized for running at every level.

I'm not sure from where you got this because any documentary/book/article and simply real life experiences related to this subject states the opposite (take a common animal such as a dog as an example)

begueradj··on The HTML Hobbyist (2022)
> What a bunch of crap.

> Nowadays i just have to prompt Claude

The second behavior leads to the first statement.

begueradj··on Attention is your scarcest resource (2020)
Scientific fact: just like coding, sex happens in your brain.
begueradj··on Attention is your scarcest resource
Well, Steve Jobs was into that too (and he's not the only one of that scale who practiced semen retention)

And if you are an athlete of any type of sports, you will learn the hard way how it is important to keep that energy at least several weeks (to several months) before (and during) the competition.

begueradj··on Attention is your scarcest resource
Men like Steve Jobs were known for their high attention and focus (signal-to-noise ratio)

Focus on your goal + discipline & practice + semen retention = you will be a "übermensch".

begueradj··on Google can review or read all user communications, including private messages
All Google (& Co) products are spyware.
begueradj··on Stop selling “unlimited”, when you mean “until we change our minds”
> Here's how the AI pricing bait-and-switch works:

> You can tell how it's intentional with both OpenAI and Anthropic by how they're intentionally made opaque. I cant see a nice little bar with how much I've used versus have left on the given rate limits

Well, that's a scam. A legal one.

begueradj··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?
I am familiar with the UFC as a follower: there are many current and former competitors confessed every training camp out there hires experts who know to administer performance enhancing drugs into their athletes in a way they can not be caught when tested.

There is always a way to cheat.

begueradj··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
You are right. Thank you.

On the other hand, mastery through 10 years of practice means and leads to a good knowledge of data structures and algorithms.

begueradj··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
No, the book is not about rehearsing you for interviews. In contrary, the book emphasizes on the mastery of your tech which books rehearsing you for interviews neither claim nor can do.

The whole idea of the book is to get deep insight into your tech following the 10 000 hours rule which one might achieve within 10 years of practice.

It was published against the mainstream idea of that time advertised under the name "Teach Yourself Something In 24 Hours". This book is a call for hard work, mastery and is against rushing when learning.

begueradj··on DaisyUI: Tailwind CSS Components
> you can continue to use tailwind for everything else that DaisyUI has not implemented. It's just an additive layer to tailwind.

I used VuetifyJs with Tailwind in the same project, so I do not see the difference/advantage

begueradj··on Jujutsu for busy devs
> I was productive the same day I switched and within a week I had no remaining situations where I needed to fall back to git commands.

When it's our first time, the tissue damage caused by the training can weight a lot to the point we could not even be able to sit properly in front of the desk during the first couple of weeks.

begueradj··on To be a better programmer, write little proofs in your head
It makes sense. Thank you for the effort.
begueradj··on To be a better programmer, write little proofs in your head
> sketch a proof in your head as you go that your code will actually do what you want it to do.

Could anyone, please, explain me the meaning ? I can't get it.
