beersigns··on Loading half a billion rows into MySQL
Percona also absorbed Maatkit in their tools for those familiar with it. Very handy stuff in there for automation of various processes.

Pretty happy with Percona as a drop in replacement for MySQL.

beersigns··on Zuckenberg Sued
Seemed pretty inevitable something like this was going to come down. Whole IPO process felt pretty hush-hush and kinda suspect. Pretty thrilled I didn't sink any money in it.
beersigns··on The Xbox 360, Now A True Cable Box Killer
It depends on how close you live to a Redbox or if you stumble across them during the day. I only have to walk across the street to one & as as result have started using it a lot more over premium streaming services. They tend to have'm in grocery stores and other heavily trafficked areas as well. For reference I'm in the mid-west....
beersigns··on Let's get a little louder
It's amazing what rises to the surface for some people when they get a few drinks in them. I'd agree with the above posters and advocate the immediate handling fall to the establishment. It doesn't sound like this is a isolated incident and is likely to be an issue in the future. Being a public speaker you have to consider how you present yourself and if you behave like this it shouldn't come as a surprise if you end up being omitted from future events.

Edit:grammar

beersigns··on Let's Not Call It "Computer Science" If We Really Mean "Computer Programming"
2 years after I graduated with a BS in Computer Science from the LAS College the Engineering College introduced the Software Engineering program. It was a joint effort between the ComS & CompE departments. Becoming increasingly common.

Even having the underlying ability to understand something sufficiently doesn't imply you'll automatically do so. There are plenty of times even a properly educated person on the subject matter at hand will miss opportunities to apply their knowledge. Recognition of a given scenario is a test of your analytic ability, not sheer know-how.
beersigns··on The trouble with Checked Exceptions (C# architect)
I agree with you but converting the masses, especially in the workplace, is tough.
beersigns··on Poll: Do you test your code?
Currently working a webapp with a legacy(2002ish) java code base with a fair amount of testing but it's not even close to full coverage. JMockit has gone a long ways to towards making it easier to expand the test coverage but it's difficult to find time to make significant impact.
beersigns··on Why CS people should go to college - lessons from basketball
10/42 HS draftees did make at least 1 all-star game. Take a look at the list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_high_school_draftees

I'd be curious to see the % of drafted players from college ranks that make at least 1 all-star game. HS % is probably higher.

beersigns··on Why I'm Moving Away from the Play Framework
I'm positive they don't. Anyone who's ever written anything substantial for a Java App server should know that HashMap isn't thread safe. Magic fix: ConcurrentHashMap....better still write your own.

EDIT: I am also referring to the poster. I'm a fan of Play and echo many of the sentiments others are listing out.
