beermonster··on Final thoughts on Ubiquiti
No one. Sadly!
beermonster··on WebKit on GitHub
I assumed it to mean, what with GH being owned by Microsoft, it’s now in the extinguish phase of EEE (embrace, extend, extinguish). Though if anything I think it’s in the extend phase.
beermonster··on Bank of America Email: “Update Your iPhone”
What did it say? I know Starling mailed customers.
beermonster··on Shazam turns 20
Try long pressing to see history.
beermonster··on Given Apple's behaviour adding ads, what are the best Linux phones?
What ads ?
beermonster··on Upgrading from Debian Jessie to Bullseye after nearly 30 years
The HN title is misleading as it was actually upgraded from Debian 8 "Jessie" to Bullseye.

Debian 8 "jessie" support reached its end-of-life on June 30, 2020, five years after its initial release on April 26, 2015.

However that does mean it was potentially vulnerable to critical vulnerabilities for more than two years whilst world+dog used it to download PuTTY for secure access to their servers. Eek

Would be good to know how this was managed if at all.

beermonster··on What comes after Git
See https://tekin.co.uk/2020/10/better-git-diff-output-for-ruby-...
beermonster··on OpenSnitch is a GNU/Linux port of the Little Snitch application firewall
Also see https://objective-see.org/ and their LuLu tool if you're on MacOS.
beermonster··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
I read this after it coming to my attention via the hit TV show 'Person of Interest'. Really liked it (and the TV show).
beermonster··on Whatever happened to SHA-256 support in Git?
Forge is the general term for Git service providers such as gitlab, GitHub, sourcehut, bitbucket et al
beermonster··on Useless Use of "dd" (2015)
From the blog post:

"By specification, its default 512 block size has had to remain unchanged for decades. Today, this tiny size makes it CPU bound by default. A script that doesn’t specify a block size is very inefficient, and any script that picks the current optimal value may slowly become obsolete — or start obsolete if it’s copied from "

beermonster··on How to write a Git commit message (2014)
Is there a reason why GitHub don’t make it easy in 2022 to write nice commit messages? Larger boxes, visual cues for character length, non default commit messages such as ‘Updated doc blah’ which are useless.

Lots at our place solely use the GitHub UI to edit Markdown files mainly and their messages are typically the least useful for that reason.

beermonster··on SELinux is unmanageable; just turn it off if it gets in your way
Mobile applications require various permissions which can be enforced via SELinux.

SELinux policy can also be written to mitigate many vulnerabilities and vulnerability classes/vectors. Over 40% [1] of Android users may no longer be receiving important security updates, potentially putting them at risk of malware, data loss and cyber attacks.

Seems to make sense to have it enabled on Android based on the above.

beermonster··on SELinux is unmanageable; just turn it off if it gets in your way
Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is a security architecture for Linux systems that allows administrators to have more control over who can access the system. It was originally developed by the NSA.

Secure Boot and SIP are about boot integrity preventing malware early on in the boot process [1]

beermonster··on You’re muted – or are you? Videoconferencing apps may listen when mic is off
I use objective-see’s app Oversight [1] for MacOS.

OverSight monitors a mac's mic and webcam, alerting the user when the internal mic is activated, or whenever a process accesses the webcam.

Have found it very useful whilst using videoconferencing apps.

beermonster··on Git security vulnerability announced
You can run it using something like psexec sysinternals tool or Process Hacker. But it’s not something someone would likely do by accident and it’s a bit orchestrated/non-obvious.
beermonster··on Restic 0.13.0
Is there anything that must be done to take advantage of these new AEAD ciphers on an existing repo/archive ? Or is it all under the hood and transparent to the end user?
beermonster··on 1Password for SSH and Git (Beta)
Firefox for iOS apparently.

[UPDATE] although reading the replies, it looks like that appears to work. Can’t confirm as don’t use Firefox on iOS.

beermonster··on 1Password for SSH and Git (Beta)
I guess because you have to extract it to local file system in order to use it and that makes it exposed.
beermonster··on Who keeps an eye on clipboard access?
Is there a Little Snitch/open snitch/Lulu type tool for Clipboard access?
beermonster··on John Koss, headphones pioneer, has died (2021)
Was news to me!
beermonster··on Slackware 15.0
Or is an Oracle DBA
beermonster··on Slackware 15.0
Well done you for not letting that bad experience put you off.

Did you re-install and continue with Slackware after that?

beermonster··on Slackware 15.0
This might be a better link http://www.slackware.com/announce/15.0.php

Kudos to Patrick!

beermonster··on Facebook loses users for the first time
You can passively share albums on a number of platforms. Why would you email them actively?

As you say, that’s a bit weird.

beermonster··on Facebook loses users for the first time
Well it’s no longer the in thing, and TikTok is the new kid on the block. In the UK kids think FaceBook is for old people and use Snapchat and TikTok.
beermonster··on Facebook loses users for the first time
Why use FB for that and not a picture sharing site, just out of interest?
beermonster··on Running Lisp in Production (2020)
“ Our Lisp services are conceptually a classical AI application that operates on huge piles of knowledge created by linguists and researchers. It’s mostly a CPU-bound program, and it is one of the biggest consumers of computing resources in our network.”

So what I’d like to know, is would a modern “AI” approach (ML/DL) based on literature samples as input, as opposed to classical AI sitting atop an expert system/linguistic knowledge, fair any better if you were starting, say, Grammarly today?

That said, I enjoyed the article and it’s nice to have an example of Lisp being used in prod. My only experience of it is from using elisp.

What are the differences between elisp and lisp?

beermonster··on Google Maps now requires WiFi scanning to use navigation
And supports off-line navigation IIRC.
beermonster··on Google Maps now requires WiFi scanning to use navigation
So how about OsmAnd[0] ?
