beenpoor··on Ask HN: Techniques for surviving a job you loathe?
Have you made sure your current employer won't come after you ? I am curious myself. I imagine if there's no overlap between your night and day job, you are okay.
beenpoor··on There are no projects like side projects
I agree w/ the premise. However, for those working for big corps, don't the company have a legal right to go after employer's side projects (IP laws etc). Wonder how feasible it would be to produce worthwhile projects while working fulltime for an employer
beenpoor··on [dead]
OK. Makes sense.

I asked earlier about image copyrights (may be a broader question for all). Is it okay to link to some other site's images (even if there is no business conflict) ? For example, is it okay to include Spotify's album cover ?
beenpoor··on Principles of Rich Web Applications
Nice!
beenpoor··on Principles of Rich Web Applications
Thanks for the info!

Do you know how the counter works ? I am a JS noob. I see at the bottom of script he's updating the counter, but who is calling the update ?
beenpoor··on Ask HN: Simple landing page or an informative one?
In the current version, I can't tell what it does. The pic is way too small (I mean the text in the pic). May be bigger fonts might help.

You may still want to add "

A better way to share files and links Turn them into one easy to read feed and always know who sent what and why"

Look awesome! How do you deal with copyrights ? For example, the images or the data associated with you display ?
beenpoor··on Watson Services
First off, sorry I was rude yesterday. I tried three different demos and all of them were asking for either FB login or something and got annoyed I couldn't try it.

Few questions. I am interested in question and answer service. Is there any related demo ? Specifically, a pre-trained knowledge base. Even better if you can allow anyone to ingest a knowledge into your cloud, train and have it running.

beenpoor··on Watson Services
In the 30 second attention I was going to give, 20 seconds was spent on registering. And then 10s to figure our if there is any demo or any sort.

I couldn't find anything easy to find. I give up. Website is too slow too. And everything shows classic big corp red tapism.

Useful! Thanks for posting
beenpoor··on Apple boycotts German newspaper after Bentgate Video – open letter to Tim Cook
Am I only one who find these videos moronic ? I mean, ofcourse it bends under what appears to be lot of pressure. My take is you shouldn't be affected if you don't wear too tight a jeans to make it bend.
beenpoor··on Show HN: Airtable, a real-time spreadsheet-database hybrid
Awesome homepage and video! Bloody well done. All the best. It looks quite useful and easy to use. Have good export functionalities and handle different OSes and you have a winner!

I felt mixed about his speech (I listened to it fully). I think it lacked bit of finesse considering it was addressed to country's eminent scientists. But then, perhaps therein lies his genuineness.

I just donno man..this is easily the funniest comment in a long time.
beenpoor··on Show HN: I'm renting a truck to make buying and selling furniture easier
This is actually a nice idea. Lots of potential. Congrats on building a MVP! Few things that come to my mind - 50/50 split seems pricey! - How about you do it differently ? pick up only those that have guaranteed buyer and you take a commision from both seller and buyer
beenpoor··on Show HN: Markov chains explained visually
Thank you! I understood what Markov Chains are now. Nicely done and in a simple understandable fashion.

I am also trying to understand what they call Hidden Markov Model (specifically, I just cannot wrap my head around how it gets used in speech. They just look like entirely different things). Would be awesome to see an update with the Hidden MM.

beenpoor··on Ask HN: In the wake of Amazon suing, what can an employee do and not do?
Shuji case was a strange one, though justice was served at the end.

>>>>Some companies will want rights to anything that you think up during the time of your employ with them, whether it is directly work related or not.

It looks like it would be useful for someone to build company vs rights website ! Basically, record blacklisted companies for hackers!

beenpoor··on Show HN: An open-source, Raspberry-Pi-based Siri alternative
I can't upvote this enough. There are very few companies that are masters of this game. Because it is extremely difficult to build. Every stage is a painful process and there are so many moving parts. To begin with you need very high quality recordings. Successful companies have voice directors whose job is to record voice at most optimal settings (and to make sure speaker speaks is neutral dispassionate tone). And then there is the manual process of segmentation and phoneme alignment - That requires lot of human effort. Then you run the code! It will take quite sometime. Then you study the quality of synthesis. Fix issues manually (for example, if you are using concatenative synthesis, you may have to fix offending phoneme alignment based on feedback). And iterate on this. Unless you have a team, I wouldn't venture into this and rather use third party leaders.
beenpoor··on Show HN: Deaf? My iPhone app wakes you up if it hears an alarm
Meaningful app. You are charging 2.99$ - but I still don't feel bad. It's a useful app and we need more of such apps, even though the price is > 0.99$.
beenpoor··on Show HN: A website to pitch your new startup ideas
Seriously, why would any one sign in without even knowing what it would contain. Put some samples atleast.

I totally agree with you. The reality is most people have their own notion of being poor. It is all relative and in many cases, their notion of being poor is highly exaggerated. I grew up in third world and I know what being poor is.
