beebs93··on Ask HN: When do you green light tech positions with management?
> but you should take solace in the fact that you do not now work at a company where they have these kinds of issues. Keep your head up!

It's still pretty frustrating, but this fact helps a bit knowing I may have indeed dodged a bullet. Thanks!

beebs93··on 8-bit GIFs of Japanese life
Awesome - thanks for the link!
beebs93··on 8-bit GIFs of Japanese life
Wow - way too many feels. I lived in Japan for ~3 years and this brought back so many awesome memories.

I second the notion that keeping it in pixel art form invokes a childhood-like nostalgia.

If someone made a series showing children's progression through the various computer + gaming consoles over the last 30 years I'd probably lose it.

beebs93··on Developing NASA's mission software with Java
I don't use Java, but I found this fascinating. Very interesting article.
beebs93··on Animated History of the Atlantic Slave Trade
Ha - I was impressed before realizing you could do that. Now I'm even more amazed!

beebs93··on Ask HN: How to use small chunks of time productively
Agreed.

I work out every morning Mon-Fri then I'm at my desk a good 45-60min before everyone else arrives.

I'm more productive during my "silent endorphin" rushes than any other time of day.

As soon as I hear the first person arrive, I toss my noise-cancelling headphones on, crank some white noise, set my IM status to "Busy" and then go for as long as I can before someone interrupts me. (usually ~30-60min).

beebs93··on Classic arcade game TRON on a cloth modelling grid
Ha, very slick - nice work!

The fabric makes timing a bit harder, but it's still a lot of fun.

beebs93··on Ask HN: When did you write your first commercial code?
My first commercial code was in 2010 during my internship where I spent ~2 days styling a few forms with non-SASS CSS in Eclipse.

...yeah, I know.

beebs93··on Important Things to Remember When Coding
Good article - it's funny how easy it is to forget these points.

"Worrying about “geek cred” will slowly kill you"

This one rang particularly true as I easily overlook any successes I've had because they're rarely made public. The ones that make it to the light of day are never what I consider my best work. I'll see more popular programmers, lament my relative obscurity and then the whole Impostor Syndrome will flare up and nearly stop me in my tracks.

It's such a fantastic feeling to have leaned to say "meh, fuck it" and focus on what I love about my vocation.

beebs93··on How Google Will Use Firebase to Supercharge Its Cloud Computing
Agreed.

I've used Firebase for a couple internal company projects (right after they left beta) and I was able to quell any misgivings our AMs and PMs had about relying on 3rd party startup services by explaining the sheer amount of time saved by not building their functionality ourselves.

I've been holding back on using it for client work as the same people can't get past "only a year old service so not ready for production", but now with Google's backing and them making it clear it's not just an acquire-then-abandon startup I have more ammunition to sway pessimistic minds when a Firebase backend is warranted.

beebs93··on IBM Watson API
I sent a e-mail to my co-workers containing "...natural English to ask Watson..." and somehow people read it as "You can ask Emma Watson, who is English, a question and she will respond".

And I thought, "...close enough - Watson could answer questions about Emma".

beebs93··on Sprint Will Sell a $12 Wireless Plan that Only Connects to Facebook or Twitter
I guess serving up ads, giving away different deals, etc. specific to a user's Internet pipeline (i.e. firehose vs app/site-specific) will be reality as it's just another filter.
beebs93··on Show HN: Pagekit – A new, modern CMS built with Symfony components
The first thing that caught me was the Snake-inspired logo. Very nice touch.

Looking forward to playing around with the demo.

beebs93··on I'm an Impostor and That's Okay
"The trade-off is that I feel a ball of anxiety sitting somewhere in my brain — the knowledge that I have so much to learn today, which doesn’t include all the things I missed yesterday or will miss tomorrow. There’s just too much. I’m just one man."

As a fellow Impostor Syndrome sufferer, this point resonated the most with me. Once you realize you cannot do it all, I think you improve more over time than you would frantically trying to digest everything as it comes in real-time.

I love Fight Club so I'm gonna squeeze this square quote into a round discussion: "It's only after we've lost everything that we are free to do anything".

beebs93··on How to be a sane programmer
Geezuz Murphy I was almost yelling this at the screen as I read the OP's comments.

There is no single template to improving as a programmer while staying both mentally and physically healthy.

Define your goals and align your life to meet them; do NOT align your life to meet goals defined by others.

beebs93··on Burnout
Excellent point. If you find yourself at a job where they discourage programmers from reading tech blogs once in a while then RUN. FOR. YOUR. FKING. LIFE.
beebs93··on Burnout
I somewhat agree.

I'm fortunate enough to work in such a job, but keep in mind that it's those "holy crap I didn't know you could do it that way" moments that get you excited and can't wait to tinker with in on your own.

There's a difference between being a bored conveyor belt developer who feels unfulfilled at the end of the day and someone whose been given a new set of "lego" and cannot contain their curiosity.

beebs93··on Burnout
Good post - short, sweet and to the point.

It's important to find that balance between what you love and what keeps you healthy. Some people here may go on the defensive and read it as "I don't work every waking hour and you shouldn't either", but hopefully they'll take a deep breath, release the kung fu grip on their copy of "Design Patterns" and remember to just grab a decent night's sleep every so often.

beebs93··on Dark spot under cockpit of A-10s
I was really expecting something 10x more complex (e.g. A special WiFi-reflecting paint that prevents missiles from stealing the A-10s bandwidth or some such).

I love how simple yet effective it is. A very "just-use-a-pencil-in-outer-space"-type solution.

beebs93··on Our modern web theme goes live
I like how you can finally add the search field as search engine in Google Chrome.
beebs93··on Show HN: A Raspberry Pi + NodeJS-powered talking robot head
My (with the help of a couple other geeks) first attempt to combine a Raspberry Pi device to a custom-made robot all powered with a NodeJS server as a go-between.
beebs93··on A proper JavaScript templating engine with a sane syntax
Any plans for template inheritance (e.g. swig)?
beebs93··on Sydney tunnel water screen stop sign for oversized vehicles [video]
Funny, I also thought a stop sign wasn't severe enough (I wanted the water screen to project an oncoming semi to scare the sh*t out of the driver), but illusions like that would cause some drivers to panic and endanger motorists around them.
beebs93··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
Just going to spit out what first came into my head:

- Pretty nice looking website for rolling sushi! - I can sign up to reward my employees by learning to roll sushi? Something is not right... - Oh, employee rewards program - cool! - Hmmm, I wonder if they break rewards into categories like "Developers" so I could redeem things like GitHub, DropBox or MT/RackSpace plans.

All in all, nice looking site and pretty impressive for a first go at coding.

Best of luck!

beebs93··on My Dad The Engineer
Your dad is not egotistical, but it takes a bit of ego, some arrogance and bravery to say, "No, it's not impossible" and then try to prove yourself right.

What your dad really has is character - enough to keep himself from letting any of those qualities take over.

Excellent story - thanks for sharing!

P.S. My father is the same way and when asked he simply says, "No, I don't think I am always right - I just know when I am".

beebs93··on Twitter chooses Drupal for their official blog
I'm not too surprised they didn't chose WordPress - especially given the recent high risk vulnerabilities in popular WordPress plugins.

Drupal still seems like a massive sledgehammer for a small nail when it comes things like simple blogs.

I just loathe the flawed "Well the White House uses it so..."-like logic that we hear from clients.

beebs93··on SendGrid Fires Company Evangelist After Twitter Fracas
When the dust settles, all that will have really changed is male workers being even more overly-sensitive to every syllable they utter when a female colleague is within earshot.

I've personally said "Just fork her" many times at work in front of my female co-workers without an afterthought. While I will continue to do so, if a new female employee starts after today I may just wait for her to make a penis joke before I feel comfortable enough to suggest copying someone's repository to their personal one for the sake of code contribution and/or modification.

Sweet cake-frosting-Christ - this all could have been avoided with a head turn and a "Hey, do you guys mind not speaking like that here? It's making me uncomfortable".

beebs93··on Show HN: TextRazor, a scriptable text mining API
Wow, nice demo. I agree with the others the lack of pricing is a bit disconcerting.

Btw, anyone else read the title as "Trent Reznor"? I need a coffee...
