beebmam··on Ask HN: Why is home property information so public?
Why should real estate have MORE stringent requirements on ownership disclosure than stock ownership?
beebmam··on Renting vs. Owning a Home, by State
Housing is strictly a significantly worse investment over the long run than stock markets, if you consider just appreciation and expenses. However, it's pretty lucrative to buy and rent, if you can find tenants. That points to the obvious problem: there's not enough housing. Unfortunately, our governments create massive hurdles to build more housing, usually spurred on by interest groups.
beebmam··on The worst programmer I know
If your leadership is tossing these incredibly valuable engineers aside, then it's time for you to toss that leadership out. You can do that by leaving, or talking to management about this, or unionizing. It's crazy to me tech workers aren't unionizing anyway.
beebmam··on Fine-tuning GPT-3.5-turbo for natural language to SQL
Really? I sure can. I can even imagine a single API request that triggers a job that costs $100,000. These APIs exist. They're not for individuals.
beebmam··on When should you use the IN instead of the OR operator in Postgres?
Shouldn't a database backend be able to semantically determine the two queries are equivalent and perform the same operation?
beebmam··on Microsoft is using malware-like pop-ups in Win11 to get people to ditch Chrome
Good, people should be pushed away from Chrome as strongly as possible given what Google is doing to it.
beebmam··on Automatic Generation of Visualizations and Infographics with LLMs
It's impossible to use excel for big data, the application has soft limits due to responsiveness.
beebmam··on Deep Neural Nets: 33 years ago and 33 years from now (2022)
You're leaving out the training requirements
beebmam··on As I get older, I just don't care about new technology
Only tech I've been excited for in the last ten years is generative AI
beebmam··on Fish – A friendly interactive shell
Does it have support for reverse search yet? Not interested in auto complete.
beebmam··on If you’re a criminal I will not use any application you write
> Call criminal behavior for what it is; don’t pretend it’s not criminal. If we all start identifying Big Tech for what it truly is, a band of stalkers, perhaps we can start changing the future.

I have a hard time taking this article seriously with hysterical statements like this.

beebmam··on Programmers should not call themselves engineers (2015)
Don't forget the software security space.
beebmam··on Mastering Emacs
Year after year I find myself using vscode instead of emacs for almost everything. Until org-mode support in vscode improves, I'll keep using emacs for that.
beebmam··on Saving Lives (2004)
My PC takes about 5 seconds to boot to be usable.
beebmam··on Be sceptical of your own work (2009)
What I do:

1. Add TODO items when I'm in flow

2. When I'm not in flow, I search TODO items in code/notes I own

3. Add a basic task in a project management tool with no estimations for each TODO item

At least then it's in a system to be triaged at some point.

beebmam··on Forget ‘quiet quitting’ – ‘loud laborers’ are killing workplace morale
This makes sense if you're a mercenary. Which seems to be what most people here on HN are, and same with most companies I've worked at.

True believers are at companies because they other motivations than personal wealth. I find most companies have very few true believers.

beebmam··on Anti Warez Association, 1 (1993)
Mass culture grew onto the Internet and homogenized everything. Politics finished off the resistance.
beebmam··on StarCraft was never meant to be played the way Koreans played [video]
I don't like Brood War as a game, both to play and to watch. I much preferred Starcraft 2 over the original, but unfortunately the esports scene died for it. In any case, RTS games just don't seem like good games for humanity, it's very easy to get repetitive stress injuries from them at high APM play.
beebmam··on AML works, even if it intercepts less than 1% of criminal proceeds
Seems like:

- 1 isn't necessarily true if certain techniques are used, and those techniques are indeed used (there's a bunch)

- 2 feels overblown by the other users here, to the point that I believe many who are opposed to AML efforts here are acting in bad faith and have other intentions

- 3 seems doubtful given modern Chinese and Russian money laundering efforts in the west

- 4 is a bigger discussion to be had, and in my opinion, can be justified given the societal consequences of not acting against money laundering. We've already seen a big consequence of it with real estate prices

beebmam··on ARM’s Cortex A710: Winning by Default
Who cares? I genuinely haven't needed my phone to be faster for at least 5 years. The only reason my phone becomes slower is because of operating system bloat that they keep introducing on phones.

Just give me an open OS, an old phone, and a web browser and I'm good. If I need serious computation I'll use a 400-core ephemeral cloud computer with 12 TB of RAM, or a modern GPU, depending on workload.

beebmam··on Maybe the problem is that Harvard exists
You can never make dysfunctional families with awful parents more equal unless you rip all children from families.
beebmam··on Maybe the problem is that Harvard exists
I totally agree that Harvard has (and should have) a right to do whatever they want with their institution and admit whoever they see fit.

But if we're serious about a liberal/conservative "equality of opportunity" vs a progressive/socialist "equality of outcome" reality, then we should consider that children have very little consent over the kind of education and familial upbringing they get, yet that childhood education and familial upbringing has profound implications as to whether they can get admitted to a school like Harvard or not.

If we're serious about equality of opportunity society, then we should take a lottery admissions policy for young adults seriously. But it's fine if you don't care about equality at all, at least be explicit about it.

beebmam··on Show HN: Bubblic – end loneliness together using the power of your voice
This was beautiful, thank you for your thoughts on this.
beebmam··on Wheat gluten spurs brain inflammation in mice
How much time? I've given it like 6 months where I'm eating wheat again before I'm forced to stop because the symptoms become way too much to deal with.
beebmam··on Wheat gluten spurs brain inflammation in mice
I do not have the allergy. I also don't have Celiac disease. (Yes, I have been tested for these, presuming the tests are accurate)

However I do have these symptoms after a few weeks of including wheat in my diet again:

- serious muscle tightness, especially my chest and diaphragm/intercostals

- joint soreness/pain, ankles/wrists/fingers

- constipation

- pimples on my shoulders and chest

- occasional stuffy noses

These symptoms mostly alleviate within a few weeks when I stop eating wheat.

My doctor thinks it's probably some kind of "sensitivity". I don't really know what that means, but she said it's fine to stop eating wheat if that improves my symptoms. So I did. But it tastes so good that every several years I reintroduce it to my diet, and I end up regretting it as the symptoms come back.

Have had this problem with wheat since I was a teenager. Started taking action about it as a young adult. I'm middle aged now.

beebmam··on Jim Keller and his pioneering work on chip design and architecture
I found that Lex interview enlightening for two reasons. Firstly, Keller is a profoundly talented and interesting guy. And secondly, Lex is a truly painful and incompetent interviewer; virtually every time Lex spoke I begged my screen for him to stay quiet and let Keller speak.
beebmam··on There Is No Housing Crisis
I find the argument that we shouldn't increase housing supply to make housing more affordable laughable.
beebmam··on There Is No Housing Crisis
It's pretty clear they're arguing their point from a Marxist lens of exploitation and oppressive classes. I don't mean to state that pejoratively, just factually.
beebmam··on We are all animals at night
Humans have some deeply self-destructive tendencies. It's not just a predator/prey or an oppressor/oppressed relationship. I'm not sure that if we ban all outlets for self-destructive behavior that something good will come of it. Offering some amount of consentual self-destruction is absolutely in the business of helping mankind, in my opinion.
beebmam··on Mortality patterns for patients hospitalized during cardiology meetings (2016)
Speaking as someone with a health care worker in the family who just went on strike, I think this makes a lot of sense. When hospital workers go on strike, it often forces the hospital to go on diversion, leading to other hospitals taking on all new patients, who are usually in some form of medical crisis and have a higher chance of dying than stabilized patients already under care. Thus, it makes sense that a hospital which has workers that go on strike have a lower death rate on average.
