beberlei··on My Emotions as a CEO
product market fit (PMF), the PFM abbreviation are typos i believe.
beberlei··on Ireland joins OECD International Tax agreement
I believe the reason they mentioned it is that they have very large english speaking populations, famously a german conservative said he doesn't know if a person in a shop in Berlin can speak German or "only English".
beberlei··on The rise of never-ending job interviews
Yes! Because the IDE cannot help in Github Pull Request reviews for example.
beberlei··on Documenting our migration to Docker
You use PHP FPM (Fast CGI) behind Nginx, so you run multiple PHP-FPMs each with their own PHP version. This falls out of stock Debian/Ubuntu already and can be easily extended to even most recent and older PHP versions through PHP Debian Maintainer Ondrejs PPA. Currently PHP 7.0 - 7.4 and 8.0 available via apt-get
beberlei··on Migrating Facebook to MySQL 8.0
Oracle is selling Enterprise features and Support, i am sure they make a lot of money with MySQL.
beberlei··on Could a four-day working week become the norm?
I believe since the study ran 3 years, this is covered by the length. This is a much more robust result than an experiment trying this for just 3 month for example.
beberlei··on Could a four-day working week become the norm?
I believe the problem is specialization of "Human capital" as the economists would say. I can't reference any scientific reseach in this regard.

But anacodically, when I as a business owner have gone through the tremendous transaction costs of finding good employees, then its much better for me to employ 3 of them at 40h/week, then 4 of them at 30h/week.

beberlei··on Two Years of Squash Merge (2019)
They show Github in their screenshots, and on Github you can delete a branch and the original commit history in the UI is still kept and available. So you don't have the branches locally, but Github still has them around.
beberlei··on Why Lichess will always be free
yes, I believe it was at a hackathon in 2010/2011 when during an off-topic discussion with Thibault he mentioned moving to Scala. So very long time ago :)
beberlei··on Why Lichess will always be free
This is going to sting but an early version was built on PHP and Symfony framework :)
beberlei··on Kafka without ZooKeeper
Anything from hashicorp, vault, consul, nomad for example. yes there is a go library for the basic raft setup afaik
beberlei··on SUSE targets pre-summer IPO
SUSE bought Rancher though, so they are all into Kubernetes too
beberlei··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
And this organization and big corp then take a combined 30% of all revenue.
beberlei··on Balancing the needs around the CentOS platform
That might now be Oracle Linux. https://linux.oracle.com/switch/centos/
beberlei··on PHP RFC: Enumerations
its definitely a weak point of the RFC at the moment.
beberlei··on PHP RFC: Enumerations
its implicitly addressed by saying enums map to objects and clarifying how "::class" works, i.e. enum_exists is not necessary, because its implementation would essentially be class_exists.
beberlei··on PHP RFC: Enumerations
a draft of the RFC contains an example: https://github.com/Crell/enum-comparison/blob/master/rfc.md#... - I would agree with you that using monad as a term here confuses much more than convinces of the feature.
beberlei··on PHP 8
one benefit of match over switch is that it uses === and not == internally. So it does not suffer from type coercion problems.
beberlei··on PHP 8.0.0 beta 2
PHP has sort of done serverless in 2000, so evolutionary dead end is a a bit harsh :)
beberlei··on PHP 8.0.0 beta 2
a few of the footguns are also getting removed in PHP 8 by stricter and more consistent number to string comparisons:

https://wiki.php.net/rfc/string_to_number_comparison https://wiki.php.net/rfc/saner-numeric-strings

In addition more internal functions throw exceptions instead of notice+return false on completly invalid arguments:

https://wiki.php.net/rfc/consistent_type_errors

beberlei··on Named arguments are coming in PHP 8
That is possible, but requires writing a class, which increases mental load
beberlei··on Named arguments are coming in PHP 8
Named params helps the beginners, maybe even more for use of internal APIs

- no needle/haystack order problems anymore - no need going to docs to understand what a boolean or „magic value“ stands for

beberlei··on GitHub has completed its acquisition of NPM
This massively depends on the architecture of the package manager though. Composer (PHPs primary package manager) only serves the metadata and directs the installer to the already packaged ZIPs hosted on Github/Bitbucket/Gitlab. This allowed them to serve the whole community as a small team of 2-4 for almost a decade now without any outside funding.
beberlei··on From Spain to Germany, farmers warn of fresh food shortages
There is a platform for Germany by the ministry of agriculture organizing it and it seems they had 30k prospects last week: www.daslandhilft.de - one problem as I understood is that this is not all unskilled laborer work, but the there is quite some machinery involved where skilled personal is required.
beberlei··on Analysis of compensation, level, and experience details of 19k tech workers
Its not a tax in Europe, but usually the companies share of social insurance. That is why the word payroll tax is confusing to us Europeans :-)

In Germany the company share of social insurance is another ~20% on top of the employees pre-tax salary.

It is not nearly enough to explain the wage disparity between SF/US and European salaries.

beberlei··on PHP 7.4
What would you like to see instead improvement wise? The typing features are optional, so everything that makes PHP simple to use is still there and available.

I have some patches to improve the DOM API extension for example, simplify its usage which would make it much simpler to use.

beberlei··on Selling My Bootstrapped SaaS Business (2017)
That wasn't at all the problem for me in the first years of bootstrapping. I didn't invest with my own capital, but by putting my spare time into it. Funding was provided by the early customers. I kept working full time for my previous employer for one year, then part time the second and third year with decreasing hours.

Also now that its running on its own, I also feel that I have less risk, because with a profitable company there is no requirement for growing a specific amount that investors demand or otherwise they take your control away.

beberlei··on Union Types have been accepted for PHP 8
There are phan, php-stan or psalm tools from third parties which add this functionality to PHP. All three of them are very good and actively developed.
beberlei··on Union Types have been accepted for PHP 8
Sorry to interrupt here, but this is wrong. it is not enforced to use types for anything (arguments, return values or properties) if you don't want to. Using it is completely optional.

Edit: Ah I believe there is a misunerstanding between posters here. The usage of types is not enforced, but when you use them their correctness is enforced at runtime.

beberlei··on Switzerland Tried Negative Rates in the 1970s
Switzerland would first need to be part of the European Union to be able to be part of the Euro Currency region. They voted against this in 1992 and again in 2001. I am not swiss myself so take this with a grain of salt, but a quick research showed that overwhelmingly swiss citizens are against joining the EU to keep their independence and their unique way of doing democracy (direct votes on issues) probably couldn't work so well anymore.
