beberlei··on Germany has three months to save itself from a winter gas crisis
nuclear energy is so expensive, take the new plants in the US and france that are being built. 10-20 years in construction, 10x over costs. You can't really build a new nuclear plant in 1-2 years
beberlei··on Germany has three months to save itself from a winter gas crisis
you are right about point b.) but only at the current gas prices, it was totally fine with cheap russian gas.
beberlei··on Germany has three months to save itself from a winter gas crisis
They claimed to be really serious, but the conservative government of the last 16 years put in roadblock after roadblock, for example:

* wind energy deployment decreased massively in the last 3-4 years due to bureaucracy.

* Solar was always complicated, if you had it on the roof of your own house you would need to register a small business regardless and declare extra taxes every 3 month.

They already provide financial help for heat pumps, but the problem is that

a.) there are not enough skilled workers that know how to deploy these. in fact it was just published in the news that due to boomers going in pension the workforce in this area already reduced over 10% in the last years and projected to sink even more. b.) most houses that are using Gas heating are not isolated well enough to make a switch to heat pumps financially viable.

beberlei··on Infrastructure SaaS – a control plane first architecture
I understood a data plane is for example the MySQL/pgsql/redis servers of all customers of your db as service
beberlei··on I'm all-in on server-side SQLite
use more than one SQLite file? we have one per day and project for example.
beberlei··on Actual is going open-source
Parent was talking about 42% tax rate, so taxes only. Yes you get deducted more for social services, health insurance, pensions and unemployment insurance push this up to 46% going to the government services when you earn 100k.
beberlei··on Actual is going open-source
To clarify, 42% of every euro earned above 57919€. Weighted average tax rate is still "just" 27% when earning 100.000€
beberlei··on Tell HN: By default, New Relic will start collecting production log data on 5/3
their current pricing works based on ingested data in GB. I suppose logs falls under that.
beberlei··on Ask HN: Have you used SQLite as a primary database?
We are using Sqlite as a primary datastorage for "file blobs" and implement a software based replication using our queue to multiple servers for redundancy.

The use case is storing trace/profiling data, where we use one sqlite file for each customer per day. This way its easy to implement retention based cleanup and also there is little contention in write locking. We store about 1 terrabyte of data over the course of 2 weeks this way.

Metadata is stored in Elasticsearch for querying the search results and then displaying a trace hits the Sqlite database. As looking at traces is a somewhat rare occurence we iterate over all fileservers and query them for trace data given an ID until we find the result.

beberlei··on Germany has seized control of Gazprom Germania
Gazprom attenpted to change owners and default the company. In that case the gas contracts would have been void including its negotiated prices (under currebt market value) and the currency in euro instead of rubbels.
beberlei··on Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will'
Its like forcing everyone to have a Facebook account to talk to their local authorities.
beberlei··on BP quits Russia in up to $25B hit after Ukraine invasion
This is the important point, no matter how much we push, 100% renewable is still many years away.
beberlei··on AWS S3: Sometimes you should press the $100k button
Not confused why there is talk about software developer shortage when it seems a good amount of them work on this kind of nonsense. Talk about bs jobs.
beberlei··on Prosecutor won't charge reporter who uncovered database flaw
However i am probably right to assume that you are neither hiring in journalism nor working in that field.

In reverse, you probably know a lot names of startup or IT personalities, that nobody outside our field would ever need to know

beberlei··on Normalized crash data shows Autopilot is much less safe than Tesla claims
Parent does not include price as a metric, but cars of the same age and class, which probably have many of the same default extra safety features. Older cars might not even have ESC, they certainly don't have cameras that help you detect cars in blind angles and so on.
beberlei··on Ask HN: Does your team use feature flags?
It helps if you follow these rules:

Never modify a column Never drop a column or table

beberlei··on Ask HN: FOMO by working in startups only vs. Big companies
> It's always about the people.

This must be highlighted.

Pick a job based on people that can catapult you to the next levels.

beberlei··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
I believe this is regarding their new infrastructure secrets product, so hashicorp vault but more corporate maybe.
beberlei··on Google and Facebook execs allegedly approved dividing ad market among themselves
The strategy the European Union is going is to guarantee the first party that sings about a cartel immunity/impunity and all others can be fined up to 10% of global turnover.
beberlei··on PHP in 2022
Clarification: While Facebook sponsored a lot of work it was on their competing HHVM system, which spured other contributors that competed with HHVM (Zend mostly) to invest more in PHP and develop the performance improvements in PHP 7 and 8.

The performance improvements where not directly sponsored by Facebook.

beberlei··on Omicron variant was 73% of U.S. covid cases last week
How do you even know it was COVID? It could have been any number of flu/cold? In feb 20 there was no way to get tested for it
beberlei··on Omicron variant was 73% of U.S. covid cases last week
The 70% number was often mentioned when the original variant was still predominant end of last year. Alpha and Delta are just so much more transmissible. The vaccine was never said to prevent all infections by serious scientists
beberlei··on New EU data blockage as German court would ban many cookie management providers
You are thinking like a software engineer that an illegal practice should be completely impossible to do, but socially it always sufficed to just put a reasonably high penalty on something and fine offenders regularly.
beberlei··on Outbreak caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in Norway, Nov to Dec 2021
Last year had the original variant and this year delta. In addition last year most countries already were in lockdown since October while this year lockdowns just started mid December. In addition there are still less hospital space taken by covid patients conpared to last year, although the problem here is also mass resignation of medical staff.

How is that not much better on all fronts?

beberlei··on Austria makes Covid19 vaccination mandatory as of Feb 2022
Austria has it especially hard since they earn a lot of money from outside tourism during the winter ski season, which is the prime season for higher covid numbers and hospitalization overload. Its a desperate measure as they seem to loose at least half of the winter season this year again.
beberlei··on PHP is worth learning and using
naieve and micro benchmarks is not meaningful in 95% of cases. Did you run on the CLI with -dopcache.enable_cli=1 for example?
beberlei··on Rivian valued at over $100B after biggest IPO of 2021
its extremely "new", they only shipped a few cars yet. This video here is one of the first external reviews, i watched that to get an idea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpBMld6U9B0
beberlei··on Ask HN: State of PHP at Facebook?
I believe Slack committed to it at some point, maybe they didn't get off it when Facebook announced they will not keep up with PHP itself anymore.
beberlei··on Tech compensation in 2021
there are, to my knowledge, no labor unions for software developers in Europe. Some people have union contracts through industries that are fully unionized and happen to need software developers, but that doesn't translate to really high salaries that you see in IT.
