beardedwizard··on 2025: The Year in LLMs
I mentioned military in my reply to the sibling comment - that is the most ready example. What anduril and others are doing today may be sloppy, but it's moving very quickly.
beardedwizard··on 2025: The Year in LLMs
Military adoption is probably a decent proxy indicator - and they are ready to hand the kill switch to autonomous robots
beardedwizard··on 2025: The Year in LLMs
"Given the state of robotics" reminds me a lot of what was said about llms and image/video models over the past 3 years. Considering how much llms improved, how long can robotics be in this state?

I have to think 3 years from now we will be having the same conversation about robots doing real physical labor.

"This is the worst they will ever be" feels more apt.

beardedwizard··on Writing a good Claude.md
That is strange because it's been going on since sonnet 4.5 release.
beardedwizard··on California needs to learn from Houston and Dallas about homelessness
41% are not from California, 59% is not exactly overwhelming. it is a little more than half.
beardedwizard··on Show HN: Write It Down – Personal finance tracker
In the current AI = LLM world, why have a language model do taxes? Why not just have AI help you adapt your non AI tax planning platform to local tax laws by reading and comprehending them at scale, a language task, instead?
beardedwizard··on California needs to learn from Houston and Dallas about homelessness
This is such a bad faith article, downtown Dallas is full of homeless and the cvs has everything locked up. If homelessness went down it's because they moved to CA.

We do need more accountability for non profits though.

beardedwizard··on EA Announces Agreement to be Acquired by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners
More consolidation of media by the billionaire class. Wait till they start partisan gaming.
beardedwizard··on I feel Apple has lost its alignment with me and other long-time customers
You lost me at "traditional horology"
beardedwizard··on GPT-5
I asked it how to run the image and expose a port. it was just terrible in cursor. thought a Dockerfile wasn't in the repo, called no tools, then hallucinated a novel on dockefile best practices.

beardedwizard··on We built an air-gapped Jira alternative for regulated industries
But you didn't tell us how many orders of magnitude more expensive it is to operate :)
beardedwizard··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
No debating any of that, it does not change the facts: Way more investor money is going into tech, however dubious, in the US.

Maybe that will change in the next few years, but it didn't happen for NYC or Texas either.

beardedwizard··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
If it worked Europe wouldn't be behind in tech and tech investment.
beardedwizard··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
What specifically do you want individual citizens to do? Are you yourself complicit in everything your government does? Do you even know what they do?

Israelis are protesting, for better or worse this is what democracy looks like.

Another question to ask, does every Russian support the war in Ukraine? What can they do about it?

beardedwizard··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
what evidence do you have to support that claim?

I'm also baffled by the suggestion that democracy truly represents a majority and the apparent belief that dissent is quickly processed and rectified by democracy. Which country do you think shows this is working well?

beardedwizard··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
The same thing has been said generally about Muslims and Islamic terror organizations.

Well anyway, it is still crazy to me that somebody is making a decision about the entire population of a country based on the governments actions in 2025.

beardedwizard··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
What are you actually expecting an average Israeli who does not agree with this to do? This comment strikes me as wild considering the exact same thing is playing out in America right now, and a bunch of people are making up their minds about "Americans" and what they stand for.

The same has been true for Iran, only up until now (and probably still) we have always had a more nuanced discussion - its the Iranian government, not the people of Iran.

Come on, the government of many countries does not necessarily represent the people.

beardedwizard··on Ask HN: How do I give back to people helped me when I was young and had nothing?
The ninja party was not even great.
beardedwizard··on What happens when people don't understand how AI works
I guess I prefer to look at empirical evidence over feelings and arbitrary statements. AI ceos are notoriously full of crap and make statements with perverse financial incentives.
beardedwizard··on What happens when people don't understand how AI works
Apple recently published a paper that seems to disagree and plainly states it's just pattern matching along with tests to prove it.

beardedwizard··on Show HN: Container Use for Agents
That's really not true. Context is one strategy to keep a models output constrained, and tool calling allows dynamic updates to context. Mcp is a convenience layer around tool calls and the systems they integrate with
beardedwizard··on Take9 Won't Improve Cybersecurity
I think you are drawing the wrong conclusion - users cannot be mindful of clicks, we should live in a world where click is assumed and go from there.
beardedwizard··on Stuff I Learned at Carta
A master class on how to say exactly nothing.
beardedwizard··on A lost decade chasing distributed architectures for data analytics?
This is the primary failure of data platforms from my perspective. You need too many 3rd parties/partners to actually get anything done with your data and costs become unbearable.
beardedwizard··on Demonstrably Secure Software Supply Chains with Nix
+1, I think you have to assume owned as well and start defending from there. Companies like edera are betting on that, but sandbox isn't panacea, you really need some way to know expected behavior.
beardedwizard··on Demonstrably Secure Software Supply Chains with Nix
The bummer about lots of supply chain work is that it does not address the attacks we see in the wild like xz where malicious code was added at the source, and attested all the way through.

There are gains to be had through these approaches, like inventory, but nobody has a good approach to stopping malicious code entering the ecosystem through the front door and attackers find this much easier than tampering with artifacts after the fact.

beardedwizard··on Claude's system prompt is over 24k tokens with tools
But this is the solution the most cutting edge llm research has yielded, how do you explain that? Are they just willfully ignorant at OpenAI and anthropic? If fine tuning is the answer why aren't the best doing it?
