beachgeek··on Ask HN: When would you use cloud based hosting and when dedicated hosting?
My strategy: Have a bare minimum of servers (darn things are ridiculously cheap anyway) hosted somewhere reliable near where I live. Any NEW stuff goes into the cloud. So if I decide I need to service European customers I might rent an EC2 VM in Dublin,Ireland from Amazon and test it out. If that does well I may buy physical servers depending on economics. Any burst traffic would also be handled by virtual servers.

If you do the math, CPU in the cloud is just not cheap. Storage in the cloud may seem cheap, but that's only because enterprise storage is so expensive relatively speaking. If you're willing to put some time into it you can get 80-90% of "enterprise" functionality from your cheapo storage as well, thereby beating Amazon's economics.

But cloud is easy to provision and good for folks that don't want to deal with operating systems, networking, security, grumpy middle-aged sysadmins (that'd be me) etc etc.

beachgeek··on Ask HN: Is it possible to hire/rent sysadmins on retainer? If so, where?
Depending on where you are there may be roving sysadmins already. I'm in the SFBA and have supported myself in "lean times" (ahem between jobs) by sysadmin consulting.

MSCS+H1=Green Card = Mukti.

I am actually more hopeful and bullish about India today than my cynical posts might seem to indicate.

This is one of my favorite topics, discussing poverty in India and the US.

In India (maybe every developing country), as you mentioned, poverty is lack of stuff. You literally don't have enough to eat.

In US (maybe every developed country), poverty is the lack of HOPE.

Its very very weird. I cannot understand why some "poor" person in USA feels poor when they get to eat, have shelter, drive a car, get to rant at their Congressman/woman etc.

Its difficult to understand if you haven't lived it. I did, thankfully for a short time before I escaped. So let me try to explain. Facebook had to incorporate so they could pay taxes etc and be "legal". This is a LICENSE to operate. OK.

But lets say some govmint wizard decided that the US economy needed only one social networking company. Back in 2004 that would be myspace. So Mark Z would have applied for a license to become the next social networking company, would have waited 10 years to get it, wouldn't have gotten it, and would've eventually leaped off the Golden gate bridge.

That's what socialism is. What the tea-partiers are calling socialism is nowhere near what real, oppressive, mind-bending, government control is.

There is no more "License Raj" in India. But its still quite crazy, not that different.

Thanks all. @abbasmehdi I should have mentioned we've had various iterations of the product already where we got feedback from customers: that's what I meant by being perfectionists, not that we're sitting in a vacuum somewhere all by ourselves :-)

@TuaAmin13: I appreciated getting his feedback and so on because you know how it is: I've been getting great feedback from my beta testers etc, but nothing from adults per se. My last meeting with him though I really did get the sense he was trying to piggyback off my work, where he asked for a ridiculous amount of equity for approximately one month of real "work".

You guys have given me great feedback. I'm going to ignore the guy and just focus on getting the product out.
