> This is a really, really surprising post for Sam to write

It's actually not surprising if you follow YC and HN for any length of time. The prevailing tone coming from sama, pg, and the mods at HN is that:

- They and they alone are in a position to speak on behalf of all of "Silicon Valley". - They are above the law (see for example all of the mental backflips and excuses given regarding AirBnB's clear-cut and widespread facilitation of lawbreaking).

You can see this arrogance peeking out here and there, such as the now-deleted statement you highlighted (side note: isn't it also incredibly arrogant to think that they can simply delete things from the internet and pretend they never said them?). It feels like it's been happening more and more lately. I expect that in the absence of any kind of reality check, it will continue to come out more and more.

It's probably Snapchat equity instead of cash.

On the other hand, you can walk into a Walgreens and get "Plan B" over the counter (without a prescription). Some parts of the US don't do as good a job at stocking it, but in a place like the Bay Area, it's a piece of cake.

Facebook's app has a super-bloated > 100MB binary:

I think they have something like 150+ iOS devs, so they're almost up to a megabyte per dev!

bdrool··on The FBI has a new plan to spy on high school kids across the country
Obama used the "think of the children" canard when talking about privacy at SXSW the other day. Now, with this, it sounds like the government really wants to think of the children. All the time.

This is what happens when Rupert Murdoch runs a "news" source.

bdrool··on Content ID and the Rise of the Machines
What's telling is that Google / YouTube will use this technology to defend the copyrights of big media companies, but won't do anything about homemade, viral videos uploaded by individual users which get blatantly copied, re-uploaded, and monetized. If they wanted to, they could easily make it so that the "original" version of any given video was the only one users ever saw, but they don't. They know which side their bread is buttered on.
bdrool··on San Jose: A Place Where the Poor Once Thrived
Real Estate is the official state religion of California, and Prop 13 is our gospel. God willing, if we all just lock arms and make sure nothing new ever gets built, we can all enjoy the free money that comes from our artificially-limited housing supply, at least for those lucky enough to have gotten in early. (Everyone else can go pound sand.)

And the best part? The press will willingly write article after article snidely implying that it's all the fault of the young tech workers who have the audacity to move here in hopes of having a career. No one will ever mention that it's actually the fat bloated homeowners who are the cause of it all.

bdrool··on Which Occupations Are Priced Out of Homeownership?
Restaurant servers at zero percent? I know some who own houses in the Bay Area. Shit, I don't own one, but I know multiple restaurant workers who do. Granted, these people don't exactly work at the Olive Garden (we're talking at least one Michelin star), but it's not as simple as this article makes it out to be, not by a long shot.

bdrool··on A Message to Our Customers
> here's hoping against hope that Google, Facebook, and Amazon get behind this

I would assume that Google, Facebook, and Amazon are already sending every single keystroke we type straight to all the three letter agencies pretty much in real time. (I also assume the same about Apple, so I'm not sure what to make of this open letter.)
