bdlowery··on Scrum is a cancer
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37134050

> Not everybody knows that, but Scrum was invented to manage a team of dysfunctional COBOL programmers at a bank, not for product-led tech companies, and certainly not for startups.

> If you're mostly hiring juniors, low-skilled, unpassionate, unable to work autonomously without constant handlholding, reactive instead of proactive people, then you'll certainly need some micromanaging SDLC like Scrum.

bdlowery··on Show HN: I made an iOS HN app to navigate large threads without getting lost
Has no one heard of HACK? It’s like this app, but better.
bdlowery··on Show HN: I made an iOS HN app to navigate large threads without getting lost
HACK is better.
bdlowery··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
idk what to tell you. I have uBlock Origin on and without the proxy I see ads all the time. Either you're not in the US or you're just lying. There's a thread on the uBlock origin website with over 1,000 comments of people saying the same thing.

There's also posts their daily about how ads are not being blocked on twitch anymore.

bdlowery··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
It’s not an arms race. Twitch has already figured it out. It’s absolutely impossible to use any sort of adblocker on twitch. It’s so bad that the best solution to “block ads” on twitch is to use a proxy to a country that isn’t serving ads.

Unless twitch has some crazy way of inserting ads into the video stream, YouTube will be able to do exactly what twitch has done.

bdlowery··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
Man, some people are just crazy. You’re so hell bent on using android you limit the functionality of your phone to it essentially just being a brick.

Buy an iPhone, install an ad blocker, disable all the tracking, and be done with it while still being able to use the features of the phone you bought.

bdlowery··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
What’s the difference between this app and AdGuard?
bdlowery··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
I do the same, but because I think it’s important to see what the average use will when using the web. Especially if you’re working professionally with the web in anyway.

bdlowery··on Goodbye, CSS-Tricks

bdlowery··on GitHub staff are required to use Teams by Sep 1, 2023
They aren’t centralizing their communication in teams. It’s being used for video conferencing. Everything else remains in slack.

bdlowery··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
From a marketing standpoint there’s probably a lot of users still using intel based MacBooks, and they’re trying to convert those existing customers to the Apple Silicon architecture.

bdlowery··on macOS Ventura is now available
There’s one simple solution… buy Alfred.
bdlowery··on My next Mac might be the last
You prefer the default apple screenshotting app over clean shot x? Really? Have you even tried clean shot?
bdlowery··on My next Mac might be the last
I thought the same until I saw my boss with a basic MacBook setup move around his OS, programs, and IDE faster than me. The only difference was he didn’t spend 20 hours setting it up at every new dev job.

Custom OS’s are a complete waste of time, and you’re just fighting an uphill battle. I’d take my 20+ hour battery life MacBook Pro over anything else all day everyday.

bdlowery··on Kanye West is buying Parler
It can be genetic. But, just because someone has bipolar disorder doesn’t mean they carry the gene for it.

If you have Bipolar disorder you can get tested to see if you have the gene for it. If you don’t then it can’t be passed down.

Source: someone in my immediate family has it and their doctor told them this, got tested, and found out they didn’t have gene for it.

bdlowery··on Tesla AI Day 2022
When shopping carts were introduced into stores people were angry because it would “take away the jobs of the employees shopping for you”.

That’s obviously ridiculous. They went and did more productive things in the store. The same will apply here.

bdlowery··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
For some people, yes. There’s always a lot of bad press related towards Apple and things like this.
bdlowery··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
When you book an Airbnb you can choose the number of guests that will be staying. The maximum Airbnb allows is 16 guests, but it’s up to the guest to set a limit. The most common I’ve seen have been 5-6 guests maximum.

Also, most airbnbs I’ve used have had a ring doorbell, and in one case a security camera pointed at the front door. The ring doorbell will alert them whenever there is motion at the front door, and they’ll be able to see who is coming into the property. There’s also usually clauses in their “terms and conditions” that state if you have more people than was booked well charge you extra blah blah.

Bottom line: if you run an Airbnb you’re going to make massive amounts of money and can essentially do whatever you want with it.
