bdkoepke··on The end of neighbours
Ugh, seems like another article that derives causation from correlation.

Specifically: "We have evolved for it, to the extent that those surrounded by a tight-knit group of friends who regularly gather to eat—and, crucially, gossip—live an average of 15 years longer than loners."

Perhaps the reason that people with a large group of friends live much longer is that people who are in better health tend to have more active social lives. If you have some sort of disorder or are extremely obese could it be that you're less likely to be able to spend time with lots of other people?

bdkoepke··on Understanding the Y Combinator using Java (2009)
Here is an example using the ycombinator to transparently add memoization to a function. This enables you to get the performance boost of dynamic programming in java without having to rewrite recursion as iteration. (The code uses jdk8 but could be done without it).

bdkoepke··on Programming is a Terrible Job
Roger, may I ask what you pursued in University? You said that you learned chemistry, physics, electrical engineering and mathematics, but what degree did you get specifically? I ask because I currently have a CS and Finance degree, but would prefer to work on the type of problems you speak of. I'm currently considering doing a masters in Computational Mathematics, but I don't know whether that would get me to where I want to be or not. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated (I also saw your post here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6462363, and I completely agree with your sentiments regarding most of the job positions on HN.)

I hope this isn't another case of 'the suit is back':

bdkoepke··on A Tutorial on Anonymous Email Accounts
iPredator is using pptp which is very insecure. (The original authors of the protocol recommend that you shouldn't use it). It is also considered to be cryptographically broken as of last month. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point-to-Point_Tunneling_Protoc...)

A list of reasonable VPN providers is available here: http://torrentfreak.com/which-vpn-providers-really-take-anon...

(If you are using a VPN, you have to be aware that there is a lot of snake oil. Finding a good VPN provider is very difficult, and then purchasing the VPN anonymously is even more difficult.)
