bdavisx··on Android now supports Kotlin
Well, if you work in a more conservative company, you can use this as a way to get the "powers that be" to allow the use of Kotlin. It's basically an endorsement of the language by a company that everyone has heard of.
bdavisx··on Ask HN: How to make money while commuting to work?
Assuming that he/she is driving, that could be a dangerous distraction (even hands-free cell phone usage has been shown to be dangerous).

Besides, if it was me trying to do a podcast: "And that's why you should watch out for that code smell... Oh, that f*cking idiot, use your turn signal jacka$$!!!"

bdavisx··on What if jobs are not the solution but the problem?
It depends on the lens you're looking thru: $80k isn't substantial compared to other Software Engineer salaries. It might be substantial compared to other job classes.
bdavisx··on Rising high water blues
This story has the perfect way to ask someone to subscribe to their newsletter. The signup form is inline with the story, so it doesn't popover and annoy/distract the reader. although it should use an opt in instead of opt out on the offers portion of the form.

bdavisx··on Ask HN: Should I create a clone of a popular SaaS with rock-bottom pricing?
GEICO isn't really a "low cost leader" (even if they are lower cost in many instances) - they are where they are because of marketing. Something you might want to remember if you're going to get into the SAAS business yourself.
bdavisx··on Jeff Atwood on growing Discourse
Meh, if their advice is useful to an 'indie hacker', then why not have it?
bdavisx··on Red Hat OpenShift.io – Free, end-to-end, cloud-native development
Sorry, I didn't mean it to come off as a statement. It says that there's an online IDE, so it was a question; I unfortunately used a '.' to end the first sentence because I had an 'etc.' at the end.

It's seriously a question; and if the answer is yes, then the following statement applies (the one about attracting talent).

But yes, it came off pretty cynical and sarcastic, but if someone is going to try to force me to use a particular IDE, it would piss me off (and the thought of it did too).

bdavisx··on Ask HN: Who is firing?
Has anyone ever used these threads to target existing workers at places that have just laid off?

If not, I'd think about it if I was a hiring manager.

bdavisx··on Red Hat OpenShift.io – Free, end-to-end, cloud-native development
So if a company chooses openshift.io, then I'm not going to be able to use IntelliJ, NetBeans, emacs, vim, visual studio code, etc.

That'll help attract talent.

bdavisx··on What if we made video conferencing work?
Well, the median household income is $126,771, so it's not exactly just like anywhere else.
bdavisx··on The Cheap Energy Revolution Is Here, and Coal Won’t Cut It
The real solution is how do you get the people being conned to recognize that they are being conned and quit voting for the people conning them. If there wasn't a payout (e.g. people being (re)elected), then it wouldn't be happening.
bdavisx··on System76 is moving product design and manufacturing in house
In case anyone is reading this from a search, I thought I should clarify, the wifi sucks in Ubuntu or Win10, so it doesn't appear related to linux.
bdavisx··on I supported legalizing all drugs, then the opioid epidemic happened
Sorry, I missed that part of it.
bdavisx··on David Lynch’s Dune – A sci-fi film by a director without much care for sci-fi
It's established in the original books, not talked about much, but established. That's why there are Mentants.
bdavisx··on I supported legalizing all drugs, then the opioid epidemic happened
All this talk about prescription OD's; how many people die from too much acetaminophen in the pills they are taking to try to get high from the opioids? I don't know the numbers, but they shouldn't count as an OD, it isn't the same thing.
bdavisx··on I supported legalizing all drugs, then the opioid epidemic happened
Yeah, banning opioids isn't the solution, unless you think people should needlessly suffer. I've had a hernia surgery and my wife had throat surgery, and I don't think that marijuana would have been the answer for the first several days after either surgery.
bdavisx··on System76 is moving product design and manufacturing in house
What dongle do you use? I've got a Clevo laptop that otherwise works great w/ Ubuntu, but the wifi is pretty bad.
bdavisx··on RIP Turkey, 1921 – 2017
I'm not going to debate the dictatorship part of your comment, but is there a islamist government (elected or not) that has been good for human rights - or any religion based government for that matter?
bdavisx··on Slack Faces Giant Tech Rivals
If they want to get enterprise level customers, they better think about getting one.
bdavisx··on Leaked email from United Airlines CEO blames passenger for violent removal
The should not contact law enforcement when someone refuses to leave the plane because it's overbooked.

If someone is actually causing a problem or is somehow dangerous, then yes, by all means, call the police.

bdavisx··on Leaked email from United Airlines CEO blames passenger for violent removal
They will be party to a lawsuit; and I'm guessing that they'll settle for some amount even if they would almost surely win. Their legal costs will be far more than $800 in any case.
bdavisx··on Hackers set off Dallas’ 156 emergency sirens over a dozen times
I'm not saying that I agree that it was a foreign power that did this, but there are motives. If you can turn the sirens on and keep them on for a while, you can probably turn them off and keep them off for a while. That could be bad in a situation where they really, really needed to be turned on.
bdavisx··on Men Without Work
>I am 100% confident that I could successfully perform a relatively complex cardiac surgery on a patient with about 2-3 weeks of training and some good staff. "Cut here, tie that together, done".

And what if something goes wrong?

bdavisx··on ESPN Has Seen the Future of TV
>The cable operators make more by creating more expensive packages and then can justify it by putting a bunch of channels in them.

But they won't make more money if they keep driving more people off.

bdavisx··on Many famous scientists have something in common: they didn’t work long hours
I think about software development all the time too, but if I was in the office as often as I think about it, I would be so burnt out and depressed, I wouldn't get anything done.
bdavisx··on Politically motivated climate data deletions
>The neocon (or alt-right, or whatever) attitude is that the planet is too massive and powerful for us to affect it

Not exactly, that's the idea that's been pushed on the people who don't think for themselves, and so those people believe it, just like they believe other fake news.

The "leaders" that actually pushed the idea know that global warming is happening, and that humans are (at least a part of) the cause; they just don't care, profits are more important.

bdavisx··on Reasons YouTubers keep imploding, from a YouTuber
While using the "anti-semitism" label is overused today (I once heard Rush Limbaugh say a Jewish person was an anti-semite), calling someone an anti-semite who had someone hold up a sign that says "Death to all Jews" is not exactly a stretch. When he was making fun of those other cultures, did he say "Death to all _______ (other culture)"?
bdavisx··on Uber is facing the biggest crisis in its history
And that's why Google and Facebook (I think) both took steps for the founders to retain control in that manner. So that they would be able to focus on what's important to the company vs. bs next quarter results. And it's worked out well for both of them. But of course, they don't seem to have the "ethics" issues that Uber does.
bdavisx··on [dead]
The actual article title is "The Trump Administration’s War on Science", but that title is quite political. And I think that the HN aversion to political stuff is in general good thing, I think this kind of article is a good exception to that rule (and by extension, the Republican party war on science). But I realize that it can often end up in a flame war.
bdavisx··on Uber to Suspend Autonomous Tests After Arizona Accident
Here's the real question, do you trust Uber to do this (or really anything) the right way, or do you think they'll take whatever shortcuts they can? If someone finds a huge bug in the code and says, "Well, we need to completely rewrite this part or it's never going to work. The rewrite is going to take about 10 months." And someone else says "We can hack a patch in that'll work most of the time in a week.".

Which road is Uber going to take in this case? I know what their past performance has shown, they'll take the shortcut. Have they ever done things the hard way?
