bdavisx··on These Modern Programming Languages Will Make You Suffer
I have to say though that I prefer a functional approach w/ Either/Result<T,E> over Exceptions now that I've done both. With both you can choose to ignore an exception and have it "pass" up to a higher level, but the functional approach is more specific - with Exceptions and how they are implemented in most languages you have to look @ the source code to see what exception(s) could be thrown.
bdavisx··on Vitamin D insufficiency may account for almost 90% of Covid-19 deaths
I agree with you on "detection tests" (not sure what a Dr would call them) - but checking for vitamin deficiencies would be more of a preventative type test, and everyone should have those probably once a year or every X years, but that would lower insurance profits, so they don't happen in the US anyway.
bdavisx··on CIA Document from WikiLeaks Sheds Critical Light on U.S. Politics and Wars
I fucking hate Trump, probably more than you can imagine - but this article brings up one of the few things I thought he tried to do right - get us out of wars that we were mired in.

Of course, he did a shitty job because he's an overall incompetent person when it comes to anything besides selling himself, but he did try.

And although I didn't read the whole thing, the parts I did make me realize that I agree with the whole bring it out in the open part as well - if we're hiding that we are supporting evil dictators, most people consider that bad.

Anyway, even with all that, I still hate him with a passion and I may make it my mission in retirement to piss on his grave, literally :) - childish but it would make me feel good.

bdavisx··on Technical phone screen superforecasters
Experienced candidates shouldn't have to spend any time preparing for the technical portion of an interview - if they have to study something new to "pass" the interview, how does that reflect on their past or current abilities? All it does is show that they have time (or made time) to study for the interview. So either they are company megafan (which would be a good thing for the company) or more likely, they are after they money the company pays - so they aren't going to be the best employee.
bdavisx··on Vaccine hopes rise as Oxford jab prompts immune response among old and young
OR we could look at it as if the pandemic has already cost us 4.5T based on your figures, and that's enough. We come together and defeat the virus without anyone profiting - we all lose, we've all lost already, ffs, let's let people profit off of the death, because why not?
bdavisx··on Netflix CEO explains why he pays technologists huge salaries
I completely agree with your premise on the 10x developer in concept (although what 10x means is up for debate). I agree with the fact that a team of "good" developers will outperform a team of <good developers, by a huge amount, in many different ways - quality, features, ux, etc.

The issue is, whiteboarding people on trivia programming problems doesn't determine if they are a 10x/good developer - it only determines if they understand the particular trivia they are asked.

bdavisx··on We need young programmers; We need old programmers
If you're looking for help fixing the mess you are dealing with, find the book Working Effectively with Legacy Code - https://www.amazon.com/Working-Effectively-Legacy-Michael-Fe....

You might also want to read Refactoring to Patterns, but the legacy book is more important to start with.

bdavisx··on What I Learnt from Benchmarking Http4k, Ktor (Kotlin) and Actix (Rust) μservices
If the original author is reading this: I'm curious, did you do any vert.x benchmarking at all or did you abandon that "branch" before the actual benchmarking took place.

Also, could you expand a bit on what the team didn't like about vert.x?

bdavisx··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
The US isn't the only country with insane housing prices - and they are only insane in portions of the country. Look @ buying a house in London or Amsterdam for example.

Although US healthcare is fd though (@ work, not sure if the full f word would trigger something :)

bdavisx··on Ask HN: Is all of FAANG like this?
In the U.S., it's much more likely that the custodians/janitors are getting underpaid.
bdavisx··on Driving engineers to an arbitrary date is a value destroying mistake
The problem with safe is the problem with every other "agile" methodology wrt the article - too many people expect a commitment to all items in the 8-12 week plan, so quality starts to get sacrificed somewhere around the 7-8 or earlier of the 12 week plan.
bdavisx··on Do Lockdowns Save Many Lives? In Most Places, the Data Say No
The author is a well known government hands-off libertarian, so keep the bias in mind.
bdavisx··on Tokyo Olympics “looking at a cancellation” if coronavirus not contained
>people think much more critically in the West.

From what I've seen, the majority of the people anywhere don't think very critically.

bdavisx··on Why smart hardworking people don't become successful (2018)
I would agree that having wealthy parents generates a lot more opportunities to be lucky.
bdavisx··on Houston's sprawl drives up transportation costs
>If it’s actually widely used class stigma dissipates rapidly

I think the same is true for Chicago - both buses and rail are used extensively. There's still plenty of people in cars, but the stigma is a lot lower.

bdavisx··on Valve has mutated from a game developer into a financial middleman
Very often the way to make money with the least effort involves some kind of scamming/fraud - and at the very least it's not usually good for consumers, so it's not good for your company in the long run.
bdavisx··on Evidence of a nocebo response following a nationwide antidepressant drug switch
That's generally done to get more medicine, not to find one to help you quit using it.
bdavisx··on Depression is increasing among Americans reaching middle age
It's still totally possible to achieve this (at least in the US, and likely the world), but as a society we've decided it's more important that the top x% get a larger share of the pie than they did in those "couple of decades".
bdavisx··on Ask HN: What was your experience starting a tech consultancy?
Would you be willing to share your speccing process?
bdavisx··on Hedge Fund Private Investigators

Kind of like all of the "never been off-road" "off-road vehicles"?

bdavisx··on Jack Ma Again Endorses Extreme Overtime as Furor Rages On
What's the difference between that and working 7-8 hours with fewer breaks? Answer: The 7-8 hour person will create better products with fewer bugs (all else being equal).
bdavisx··on Italy Joins China's New Silk Road Project
I think the US ideals of freedom of speech/thought/religion are great, but unfortunately the US "ideal" of greed seems to be what the US is better at exporting.
bdavisx··on 737 MAX crashes “linked” by satellite track data, FAA says
Decades of non-management experience in the same field qualifies you to run a 30,000 employee agency?

I've got decades of non-management software dev experience, perhaps I should be in charge of Microsoft?

bdavisx··on Case Study: Npm uses Rust for its CPU-bound bottlenecks [pdf]
You don't have to install a JVM, you can bundle it with a distribution as well.
