bdavisx··on Ask HN: How do you find stuff on the internet now?
For searching a subreddit from google, you can do site:reddit.com/r/SUBREDDIT
bdavisx··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
Lower level management at Google was definitely not consulted on these layoffs. It had to be upper level only or it would have leaked more. Like really upper level. So there's no way the people @ that level know who's coasting and who isn't. I'm sure there were a lot of high performers cut along w/ some "fat".
bdavisx··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
More like NY to SF. The Appalachians would be when you're first learning pointers and the Rockies would be about the time you hit the STL and friends.
bdavisx··on Texas Roofer Arrested in Florida for Helping Hurricane Victims
Alternative headline - Illegal Business operator with little to no hurricane building experience arrested before they could do more damage.
bdavisx··on Ask HN: Do you use foreign keys in relational databases?
I'm not arguing one way or the other wrt to FK, I generally use them.

You can maintain the integrity through code though.

bdavisx··on A Mormon housewife turned a fake diary into an enormous best-seller
>It was shocking to see it. It's very sad that addiction can lead to such circumstances.

Perhaps circumstances lead to the drugs, how do you know that person's actual story?

bdavisx··on You have a sad feeling for a moment, then it passes
Have you had any second opinions? It sounds like your evaluator has given up on you, perhaps you shouldn't give up on you and find someone else who hasn't to help you.
bdavisx··on Mortgage demand drops to a 22-year low as higher interest rates and inflation
Soon the only entities that will be able to buy houses will be ones that can pay cash. This means that investors will buy up even more - so more inequality and rents that people can't afford.
bdavisx··on Books to read to understand financial crime
>If your choice is to pay the protection racket or have horrible events occur to you or your family, do you have much say at all, much of a choice??

It doesn't even have to be that "bad", what if the choice is do something unethical or your kids aren't going to have enough to eat or a place to live?

bdavisx··on Microsoft researched what made employees happy
LOL, safe uses an "agile release train", because everyone knows how agile trains are. They can stop on a dime and move in any direction, the very definition of agility.
bdavisx··on Ask HN: Should I use my old computer instead of cloud?
>If you have paying users and SLAs you'd better get that $100/month cloud machine or have a disaster recovery plan ready (and tested).

I'd say go with the cloud and have a disaster recovery plan ready and tested.

bdavisx··on Netflix’s bad habits have caught up with it
But that's not unique to Netflix - I can remember thinking how much better '24' would have been w/o all the filler crap - but then they wouldn't have been able to make a "real time" TV show (well, they could have, but they didn't). Also I tried watching the reboot of "Kung Fu" a few weeks ago - wow, there's more Asian family drama filler than there is actual "Kung Fu". It seems like the filler stuff is everywhere now.

But then again, back in the day of network tv shows when they did ~26 episodes per season, there were entire episodes that felt like fillers.

bdavisx··on AT&T's website raising the price every time I refresh the page
Because some programmers really have no idea what they are doing and just throw SO cut-and-paste against the wall until something sticks.
bdavisx··on Ask HN: How can a non-techie mom regain access to her FB account?
A physical security guard (as opposed to someone in Facebook security)?

I wouldn't expect a security guard to know much besides physical security protocols. They wouldn't be privy to anything around user accounts.

bdavisx··on The "five whys" productivity technique
>I've been keeping this pace for 18 months. I scheduled one day off

Dude, wtf. I hope you're getting paid very well and/or equity in the company, because that's totally fubar'd. You should be looking around for other jobs.

bdavisx··on Colleges for Founders
I wonder if those areas would be ripe for disruption by people thinking outside the box they've obviously put themselves in.
bdavisx··on "Buy Nothing" Groups Gain Popularity
You're right, it would be nice if the US government didn't spend trillions on the military.
bdavisx··on Ask HN: Anti-patterns from Big Tech that smaller companies should avoid?
Don't interview like FAANG unless you're offering the same compensation - otherwise you're going to get a lot of people dropping out of your funnel because the BS isn't worth it for what you're offering.
bdavisx··on A Death-Aware Career Plan
>equity somewhere along the way that would have had a big upside

That's more about luck than hard work and good ideas.

bdavisx··on Ask HN: What do you think about the no-code movement?
Someday it might happen, but the problem is being specific enough:

bdavisx··on US inflation jumps to 31-year high amid global supply chain crisis
What we had in the 90s wasn't that high - check out the early 80s. 15-16%+ mortgage rates iirc, think about those payments on a $1 million dollar 3 bedroom.
bdavisx··on Wacom drawing tablets track the name of every application that you open
There's a reason that Wacom tracks what application is running - it can change the functionality of the pad based on the program in the foreground. They probably want the information so they know what programs are most popular with their customers. That doesn't make it right, but it's part of the reason.
bdavisx··on Are software engineering “best practices” just developer preferences?
IIRC, the book Code Complete talks about best practices and contains links to studies when they apply to those practices. I might be wrong, it's been a while since I read the book and I can't get to it right now.
bdavisx··on Fierce Nerds
I've heard "cut-throat", but not kind.
bdavisx··on Half a million lines of Go
Why? I'm not being facetious, I'm curious what part(s) of the comment make you think that?
bdavisx··on Coinbase rethinking its approach to compensation
>the best candidates for Coinbase are those who are looking for a highly competitive package and are ready to let their contributions speak for themselves.

I like their concept, but contributions don't speak for themselves.

bdavisx··on A CBP contract shows the risks in connecting your vehicle and your smartphone
Because the next logical step is to allow jurisdictions (cities/counties/whatever) charge more tax on their roads.
bdavisx··on How did Microsoft make Flight Simulator seem so real?
Are you implying that it's not actually realistic, it just makes you think so? I'm not sure if the team that actually developed the software used many psychologists. Perhaps they did, but the article didn't mention that.
bdavisx··on Amazon loses effort to install camera to watch counting of ballots in union vote
This is a federal agency with legal authority:

1 - why should they have to answer to Amazon on how they conduct elections that they have been handling for longer than Amazon has existed?

2 - since it is Federal, any change to the way they handle things would likely delay the election - but perhaps that's what Amazon is really after - or they're taking a page from the Republicans and will use it to sow fake doubt about the outcome
bdavisx··on Accused murderer wins right to check source code of DNA testing kit
It would also give every person convicted using their software an incentive to open an appeal.
