bcruddy··on Being sued, in East Texas, for using the Google Play Store [video]
What about a right to a defense attorney in a civil case? That way you can't bring frivolous suits. That's actually exactly how the criminal courts work too. This seems too simple of a solution though, are there good reasons not to do this?
bcruddy··on John Oliver buys $15M in debt and forgives all of it on 'Last Week Tonight'
He mentions, without going into detail, that the forgiveness is structured in a way to avoid a tax burden for the debtor. I have no idea how this works but I think it's a safe assumption that people who know more about this than I do will comb through it and John Oliver and company have vetted their own process.
bcruddy··on Twilio S-1
It makes a bit of money but not enough to quit a day job. Writing it was super simple. Both Braintree and Twilio have excellent NuGet packages for managing both APIs. I've used Twilio with node as well and same thing, very easy to use module on npm for dealing with their API. If you're thinking about doing something with Twilio stop thinking about it and just go do it. You can send yourself a text message in literally 2 lines of javascript using their npm module, 3 if you include a callback (https://gist.github.com/bcruddy/2a5bb8ac0ee538519a45fc2b3925..., got it down to 2 with a callback).
bcruddy··on Twilio S-1
We got pretty big about a year ago when we posted it to /r/internetisbeautiful (mods took it down after about an hour since it requires a phone number and that's "personal info"). From there, @thepacketrat from Arstechnica picked it up and ran a story and it just sort of exploded from there for a couple days. At the peak of it's popularity we were on Ars, Business Insider, the front page of Mashable, and a handful of other outlets I can't remember off the top of my head.
bcruddy··on Study monitors programmers' stress levels to predict the quality of their code
It's not but just because we think it's a no brainer doesn't mean they can just "go with it" without "proving" it.
bcruddy··on Peter Thiel Is Said to Bankroll Hulk Hogan’s Suit Against Gawker
If Gawker could settle and have their insurance company take the hit then Gawker itself would remain relatively unscathed. By preventing the insurance company from paying out, Hogan/Thiel have made it more difficult to win their case and more difficult to collect to monetary award. Also - by not settling Hogan's legal bills increase as the battle rages on. Gawker can outspend Hogan, but Gawker can't outspend Thiel.
bcruddy··on Peter Thiel Is Said to Bankroll Hulk Hogan’s Suit Against Gawker
As a result of the size of the legal team's war chest they've removed language that would allow Gawker's insurers to pay any damages. This will hold Gawker liable and Gawker probably can't afford to bleed $140M without going under.
bcruddy··on Peter Thiel Is Said to Bankroll Hulk Hogan’s Suit Against Gawker
I don't have any issue with vengeance fueling a legal offensive. I also think that Gawker crossed a very real line when they outed him in 2007. What concerns me is one billionaire can bring down and effectively silence a media outlet quietly from behind the scenes.
bcruddy··on 95% of PHPixie Installs on Packagist Are Fraudulent
Because NPM is the largest package ecosystem ever
bcruddy··on Go upgrade Xcode. Fix your Git security hole
usr/bin/git is still vulnerable and is much more difficult than it appears to be to remove, homebrews git binary is stored in usr/local/bin/git
bcruddy··on Go upgrade Xcode. Fix your Git security hole
Git seems to be included with the xcode command line tools, make sure that's up to date.
bcruddy··on Forbes Site, After Begging You Turn Off Adblocker, Serves Up Malware 'Ads'
Quick gist of the code you could drop into a chrome extension to make you confirm going to forbes.

bcruddy··on A discussion about the breaking of the Internet
That's a negotiating strategy. Not calling them dicks, but when someone pressures you to make the first offer and you don't know what ballpark you're in, toss out a really high number and see what happens. In this case the response was thinly-veiled legal threats.
bcruddy··on How the Daily Fantasy Sports Industry Turns Fans into Suckers
You don't need "up to the minute" information though. Data can be days old and still be viable as long as you're using twitter's streaming API to get injury updates from one of each 32 teams beat writers as they occur. If I'm setting an NFL lineup on Friday I know the stats haven't had an opportunity to change in 6 days.
bcruddy··on Slack is down
No I meant it returned an HTML page that said "this link as moved" with a link directing you to https://status.slack.com
bcruddy··on Slack is down
I didn't notice an interruption on the desktop client and it's been logged in for about 7 hours now and slack.com looks fine. Interestingly enough https://status.slack.com is currently down while curling status.slack.com returns a page that says it's moved to https://status.slack.com
bcruddy··on Edward Snowden interview: 'Smartphones can be taken over'
What do you mean? I can turn javascript off in my browser which effectively takes control of the front end by preventing communication with the server. Native is a different story but saying "there's no such thing as a front-end that you control," is misleading.
bcruddy··on The student who discovered water on Mars says it was a 'lucky accident'
The lottery still exists because there are a lot of people who are bad at statistics.
bcruddy··on Full Reddit Submission Corpus now available for 2006 thru August 2015
This is really cool, is the source code available anywhere?
bcruddy··on Apple TV Markup Language
Another mark up language? Why? What was wrong with HTML here?
bcruddy··on Universal asks Google to take down 127.0.0.1 for piracy
127.0.0.1 is purely a virtual loopback within your own system. Google can't take it down.
bcruddy··on ALL CAPS AS a SERVICE
THIS IS AMAZING. THANK YOU FOR PAYING FOR A .IO TLD TO GIVE THIS TO THE WORLD.
bcruddy··on PHP: md5('240610708') == md5('QNKCDZO')
Yeah but javascript has 'use strict' whereas PHP decided that the easter egg "looks like you're using the wrong language!" was more important than actually allowing a 'use strict' to force === instead of ==.
bcruddy··on How Old Do I Look?
Tried two pictures. 47 and 31. I'm 24.
