bcl··on Effectively Planning UX Design Projects
You linked to the tag instead of directly to the article.
bcl··on How a bitcoin transaction works?
Nice image, but what is its source?
bcl··on Improving the Fedora boot experience
X really can't start that early. It depends on too many other pieces being started first.

But in Fedora we do have early access to the framebuffer. Plymouth uses that to display the animated Fedora logo and to prompt for any encryption passphrases.

The hardware needs to support it though, so you may not see this, especially when running in a virtual environment.

When it works right it looks pretty nice, you get a mostly seamless graphic screen after grub2 until gdm. And you can always hit ESC to see the scrolling systemd startup messages.

bcl··on What is the international arms trade and who are the major players?
The 30,000 number is BS. They are likely including suicides. Here are the homicide numbers for 2011 - http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/c...

Actual total for 2011 is 8583.

bcl··on Tor calls for help as its supply of bridges falters
No, bridge and entry traffic are encrypted. You are only exposed if you are running an exit node.
bcl··on Bitcoin Miners Are Racking Up $150,000 A Day In Power Consumption
Funny that they link to butterfly Labs, who still hasn't shipped, instead of Avalon.
bcl··on Exposed Webcam Viewer
Spiders are big PITA for security cameras. I have to brush their webs off my outdoor cameras at least weekly.
bcl··on Coinbase publishes your name and email publicly
Same comment as I made on the other thread. These are not your email addresses. These are buy it now / donation pages. If you haven't created one of these you aren't effected.
bcl··on Coinbase Merchant Data Leak?
These are buy it now / donation pages. These are NOT checkout pages for coinbase users.
bcl··on Secure Boot and Restricted Boot
All of the manufacturers that I am aware of allow you to load your own keys.
bcl··on Engineering the Bitcoin Gold Rush
I find it interesting that Avalon seems to have progressed so quickly while BFL still hasn't shipped a working unit. I'm curious about how they managed to get up to speed so quickly.
bcl··on I Bought A Firetruck
Depends on the state you live in. In Montana it qualifies for special license plates when a vehicle is 30 years old.

https://doj.mt.gov/driving/license-plates/#antiqueplates

Although by driving it to work he probably violates the 'general transportation' provision.

bcl··on Bitcoin blockchain issue - Mt Gox Bitcoin deposits temporarily suspended
The software is the central authority. As far as I have been able to tell there is no decent specification, like an RFC, that you could use to build other client implementations from so you are all at the mercy of the bugs in a single piece of software.
bcl··on How I spend my first 5 minutes on a server
Don't forget:

  netstat -ntap | less
  ps aux | less
Also check to see what's enabled to run at boot time via whatever your flavor uses.

Check for unusual daemons, ssh running on other ports (yes, the provider pre-loaded systems with a back-door ssh without disclosing it to us).

This is especially important when you are taking over admin on a server you didn't setup yourself. Other folks have weird ideas on how to admin things. Like webmin for example...

I also like epylog for finding unexpected stuff in the logs.

bcl··on Programming is not a Glamorous Job
I don't do this for the glamor. I do this for myself and the users. Everything else is gravy.
bcl··on If you have failed to grok vim, ditch the arrow keys
Go one step further. Try to stop using hjkl

I am not even close to being able to do this yet, but I keep reminding myself to use other movement commands and search instead. Eventually it will be faster.

bcl··on Torvalds clarifies Linux's Windows 8 Secure Boot position
Matthew posted a good response yesterday: http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/23400.html https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5295272
bcl··on HN will be down Saturday morning while we switch servers
Geez, could we stop posting these 'site X is down!' threads? Its gotten so bad that they're being posted preemptively. ;)
bcl··on Bill Gates has donated over $36,854,000,000 in his lifetime
This is a dupe. And the numbers are wrong.

EDIT: Found it https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5191094

bcl··on [dead]
I would suggest you stop caring so much about your score.
bcl··on "earthquakes in north korea"
Misleading title

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usc000f5t0#...

bcl··on Fedora 18 "Spherical Cow" released
Yes, you can dd the Fedora iso images directly onto USB. They will boot on BIOS, UEFI and even Macs (newer ones work better than old).

I use: dd if=Fedora-18-x86_64-DVD.iso of=/dev/sdd iflag=direct oflag=direct bs=4M

The bs=4M is important, otherwise dd uses 512b blocks which totally kills the throughput to the flash which is erased in blocks.

bcl··on Why Are Lego Sets Expensive?
In my experience Mega Bloks fit, but don't hold together as well as LEGO.
bcl··on How I Hacked Facebook’s Secure Files Transfer Service for Employees
Depending on user supplied data for password changes? Not a good idea...
bcl··on Does CloudFlare really speed up your site? Tests say not really.
In addition to this, when I tried out CloudFlare their caching feature never worked for me. I also strongly disliked having to setup all my DNS in their system. I've switched to S3+CloudFront and have been very happy.
bcl··on Montag - python static site generator v0.01
Skip this and use Pelican - http://docs.getpelican.com/en/3.1.1/ which supports reStructuredText, Markdown, and AsciiDoc.
bcl··on Is Sugar the Next Tobacco?
And for an alternate viewpoint - https://secure.huffingtonpost.com/david-katz-md/sugar-health...

"So while fructose as an ingredient excessively engineered into processed foods is, indeed, a problem- I find it far-fetched at best to suggest the native composition of, say, berries is "evil." Lustig seems to be tossing out the the strawberries with the soda. You find me the person who can blame obesity or diabetes on eating strawberries, and I will give up my day job and become a hula dancer."

bcl··on C Books and C++ Books You Don't Want
Ha! I still have a Schildt C/C++ book on my shelf. I used it back when I was learning C with Mark Williams C on my Atari ST. Probably about time to retire it to the landfill.
bcl··on Engineers as Heroes
I'd add Numb3rs to this list.
